SRPEN (AUGUST)

The Czech name for August is srpen. In Polish it is sierpien, and in Ukrainian serpen. Each of some of the Slavic languages uses the Slavic base word “serp” as a basis for the name of August. The Czech word srp means sickle, implying harvest August was typically a harvest month.

Lada once again depicts activities for the month, as he did for each month of the year. August focuses on harvesting. The top frame and Czech words declare “To the mill”, Do mlýna.

In the bottom left corner, we see men and women removing bines and picking hops off the bine. The Czech words say “harvesting”, česani chmele.

The middle frame on the left shows the harvest is complete and straw bundled, with geese picking up the leftovers.

The bottom right frame shows men hunting, when August is perfect for this, with birds feeling on grains.

In the center is the Blessed Virgin Mary. The P stands for the Czech word for virgin, panna. August 15 is the feast of the Assumption (of Mary into Heaven).

Below the BVM in center are the words Na luskách, meaning “At the pods.” Here we see two boys in the field picking snow peas, which are planted in the cooling season.

On each side of Mary you see depicted both poppy seed pods and hops. Both of which were harvested in the last couple of weeks of August. To the center right you see two children enjoying kolache (most likely poppy seed).

In each of Lada’s months of his calendar illustrations is a symbol of a zodiac sign. Here the young woman represents Virgo (Virgin or Maiden).
