i'm just imagining pronunciation guides for french speakers, I mean people can barely figure out how to pronounce french words with french spelling how would anyone know how to pronounce a foreign with french spelling (I mean english is worse but still, MESS)
Itâs quite funny to look at and itâs that same pattern of oversimplifying the target languageâs phonology and then assign allophones + using symbols with an approximative explanation when the first trick doesnât cut it, but it honestly works better than English most of the time (at least itâs got a closer phonology to most of the languages I know, mostly in terms of vowel quality). It does fuck up majorly on a lot of occasions, though.
I mean I could give you examples from my phrasebooks (gonna try and find languages you know so you can more accurately grasp what itâs like haha):
Icelandic: âĂ©g ĂŠtla að fĂĄ miðaâ becomes âiĂšgh aĂŻhtla afao mĂ©thaâ
âĂ©â for âiâ, âaoâ for âĂĄâ itâs just... aaaaah Iâm screaming, you canât just say âhereâs a diphthong, pronounce it like the two vowels in that one word, also, one of the sounds is not the correct oneâ
Finnish: âtĂ€nÀÀn on lauantai maaliskuun 8. pĂ€ivĂ€â becomes âtĂ€nÀÀ-n o-n laoua-ntaĂŻ maaliskououn kaHdĂšksaS pÀïvĂ€â
âmaaliskouounâ, because âyâ is the French âuâ and âuâ is the French âouâ, so when itâs long, they doubled it, like in Finnish, so now you have that vowel soup. And I have seen âkououlououâ for âkuuluuâ as in âmitĂ€ kuuluuâ.
(I know you donât speak it, but I just had to include) Swedish: âhur mycket blir jag skyldigâ becomes âHu:r mĂŒkĂš bli:r yĂą:g chĂŒldigâ except if you say the âgâ in âjagâ or âskyldigâ, youâll likely get a reply in English. And the French âchâ is the German âschâ except itâs not a sound Swedish has, and they use it for three different sounds throughout the book :/
I wish I had examples in English or in German, but I only have a dictionary which does use IPA and my books from uni which donât use anything because thatâs the profâs job, but it wouldnât be too hard to imagine something like âwie gehtâsâ becoming, like, âvi guĂ©tâsâ or âgute Nachtâ becoming âgoute naHtâ (you could do worse but thatâs what I think a phrasebook would go for)
But anyway, wow, this reply is long lmao
aaah thanks for being nice and supporting me on that photo competition thing đđđ I feel so bad asking my followers for favours
no problem! I really hope you get to go to Iceland again <3
