So, worms on a string are mostly covered in soft integument. Within my book I have one genus of feathered serpents, loosely placed in the longdraconid family, although they are very distantly related to other longdraconids. These dragons are legless and covered in psuedopennae: soft blade-like scales, which from a distance look like feathers.

The wyrm on a string is a New World Dragon, and I am going to throw a pin at a map and say it lives in North America, its range overlapping that of the awanyu, another dragon in the same ‘feathered serpent’ clade. (details on awanyu in mythology are here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Awanyu my dragon design is loosely based on this). However, while the awanyu lives mainly in large bodies of water, wyrm on a string is an aerial predator and lives out on the plains. Here is a doodle of the feathered serpent Wyrm on a String:

It has long thin jaws for snapping at birds in the air, and it is a very fast and efficient predator. The males produce a long thin fleshy whisker, which is highly attractive to their mates as any animal that can catch birds in mid air while their nose noodle flaps around everywhere and still survive to the mating season is a worthy mate - this is the same logic that makes peahens go nuts for a peacock who avoided predators despite having an impractically large tail. A long and flappy ‘string’ is an indication of a healthy and strong male.
