NASA's newest astrophysics space telescope launched in March on a mission to create an all-sky map of the universe. Now settled into low-Earth orbit, SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) has begun delivering its sky survey data to a public archive on a weekly basis, allowing anyone to use the data to probe the secrets of the cosmos. "Because we're looking at everything in the whole sky, almost every area of astronomy can be addressed by SPHEREx data," said Rachel Akeson, the lead for the SPHEREx Science Data Center at IPAC. IPAC is a science and data center for astrophysics and planetary science at Caltech in Pasadena, California.

SPHEREx is the latest space telescope in NASA's lineup! She will survey the entire sky in 102 different colors🌈 The launch was delayed nearly 10 times (she was nervous don't rush her...) but eventually succeeded on March 11, 2025. Do not call her a cone of shame, she will start crying.

SPHEREx (Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization, and Ices Explorer) is a NASA space telescope set to launch in 2025. It will map the entire sky in infrared light to study the origins of galaxies, search for water and organic molecules in interstellar clouds, and investigate cosmic inflation.

NASA expects to soon launch a mission to create the most colorful 3D map of the entire sky yet. Known as SPHEREx, it will analyze every pixel to see what's there, what it's made of, and how far away it is in an attempt to answer some of the most profound questions ever asked. The craft is set to launch on Friday 28 February, after which it will scan the whole sky four times over the course of the next two years. By the end of the mission, every point above will have been captured in an infrared rainbow of 102 colors – far more than any other all-sky map.
