In August 1924, Mars made a very close approach to Earth (an astronomical event called an opposition). The US government declared a National Radio Silence Day to listen for potential Martian transmissions.
Every hour on the hour, for 36 hours, civilian and military radio stations across the United States cleared the airwaves for five minutes at a time to let astronomers listen to the cosmos without interference.
The US Army even assigned a master signalman to listen specifically for any patterns or Morse code-like bursts coming from the red planet. While they didn't catch any alien broadcasts, it remains one of the only times in human history that a major government intentionally quieted its own communication infrastructure just in case outer space was trying to talk to us.👽
