I absolutely love your hurt/comfort bingo, so much angst! And happy endings! Please write "Cradling someone in their arms" for Speaker and Liam đĽş
Title: Catâs Cradle
Summary: Liam casts a spell to protect you all in a place that encourages magic to backfire.
Warnings: Major character injury, hyperventilation
Notes: Itâs been a minute since Iâve done a BTHB piece, and this one is going to be much shorter than some of the old ones, but I really like this idea. (If you sent me a BTHB prompt a long time ago, I will fill it, donât worry! I just have some late gift pieces to finish first.) Iâm sorry that this ended up being a little more gen than you probably intended, but I just needed to give Li some comfort after all of the things @speakergameâs author dropped on us in the Discord. I hope you like it.
Also here on AO3.
Lily version.
Your first thought is that you should have known. Somehow. Itâs not like the clues werenât there, but you all came here to solve a completely different mystery, and so they might as well have been whispers in a hurricane. Your sisterâs headache, Rory complaining of the dark being harder to see though, Kana being even less willing to use their voice than usual... it wouldnât surprise you, now, to hear that Sebastian or Azalea had been feeling the strain, too. Youâre glad that neither one of them had tried to use their respective powers down here.
But Li--
Li.
âLiam,â you gasp, moving forwards as your vision finally clears and the smoke settles, to see him lying on the ground with violet magic sparking from his arms like the tattoos there are a circuit board, not part of a human body. The others are still standing, and you can hear them call out at all different volumes, various degrees of concern ranging from fully-panicked (your sister) to handling-it-but-worried (Kana).
Sebastian starts to say something about someone checking the exits--thatâs right, you were all locked in here, right before--and searching for supplies, other dangers, but his voice fades in the face of Liâs shallow, pained breathing. You reach down to try and take his hand when it feels like someone shoves a hot knife through your palm and into your forearm.
âAh--â You hiss and pull your hand away on reflex, only to see sparks of Liamâs magic crackling off your fingertips as you move.
âCareful,â Azalea says, taking your hand gently in her own. The red impact mark of whatever just happened fades as she rubs her fingers over it, and your heart clenches before you realize sheâs not using any magic. The marks are just being soothed away.  âWe--I think his own spell hurt him. He wiped out...whatever those things were trying to attack us, but it hit him, too. I just donât know...â
âWe have to help him,â you say, and Azalea looks at you with determination and sadness in equal parts. She knows, but she doesnât know how.
â--have to go,â rasps Liam, drawing your attention. You look down, and thereâs a second where it looks like his eyes are completely black. Theyâre not, of course; theyâre normal, but it takes you a second to blink away the panic, and thatâs enough time for Liam to curl in on himself, turning away from you as he repeats, âGo. Bef... Before m-more of them--â
He breaks off on a gasp. Youâre not sure if itâs the way his whole body shakes through a wince, the way his breath sounds like itâs getting shallower, or the words themselves, like he expects you to leave him there, that hits the hardest.Â
But it doesnât really matter because before you can think better of it, youâre reaching out. Itâs a good thing your body knows what your heart wants to do and doesnât need your mindâs help right now because as soon as you touch Li again, that bastardized version of his magic floods into you like the worldâs spikiest mouthful of a too-hot drink. You grit your teeth and breathe through the pain as you roll Liam back towards you, getting an arm under his back as you go so that you can pull him up into a hug. One of his hands lands on your arm and the other on your stomach, trying to push you away. But you hold on.
âNo,â you grit out.  âNo, I wonât leave you.â Liam freezes in your arms at the words, and itâs a shard of ice in your heart.
âWait!â you hear Azalea say suddenly. To your horror, the next thing you feel is a hand on your shoulder. The magic thatâs now sparking off of you, just like Li, jumps to whoever touched you faster than you can turn your head, but when you do, you realize with a sinking feeling that itâs your sister who reached out.
It takes another second to realize that it doesnât hurt as bad anymore. Your sister's hand grows almost painfully tight on your shoulder, but she doesn't instantly pull away like you had, like sheâd touched a hot stove. And Liam isnât almost hyperventilating against your shoulder, either.
âOw,â your sister says, and she lets go, shaking her hand in the air.  âWhatâs happening? Are you two--?â
Her words stop suddenly when the pain comes back and you hunch forward, putting more of your body over Liamâs like a shield, even though youâre getting the sense that this doesnât work like that. Liam actually cries out this time, and you squeeze your eyes shut. If heâd started acclimating to the pain, then feeling relief only for it to get worse again was probably harder than getting hurt in the first place.
âI think I get it,â Azalea says. She sounds as frantic as she does hopeful, this time, and you look over to her from the corner of your eye. You want to stop her as you see that sheâs also reaching towards you, but you canât without letting Li go. Her hand lands on your knee.
A soft sound, like sheâd just lifted something really heavy (heavy for her, of course), passes her lips, but she doesnât pull away. Instead she nods, and when she speaks again, itâs loud enough for everyone to hear. (You realize that Liamâs cry probably got all their attention, when it became obvious he was still hurting despite your best efforts.)  âSomething here is making all our magic turn against us. Itâs why some of us have had a headache, and why Kana started feeling sick when they talked. When Liam cast a spell, his magic backfired, and his body canât absorb it back up because itâs... Well, itâs like itâs been poisoned.â
She uses her free hand to point to the almost thorny lines of violet covering you, your sister, herself, and Liam. It really doesnât look like Liâs regular magic except the color.
The touch on your shoulder comes back, and you hear your sister hiss a little bit this time. But her grip stays solid, and the pain lessens again.  âBut this helps?â she asks.
You donât respond as Liam tries to push away from you again, saying, âDonât-- Iâm fine...â
âAw, I see!â says Rory, voice bright, circling around the group of you clustered on the floor.  âSpread the force over a bigger area, and the pressure gets lighter, right?â Roryâs hand lands solidly on Azaleaâs back, and this time you barely notice a reaction at all except for your own pain decreasing. Against your chest, Liam is breathing more deeply, and his muscles are no longer so tight that you feel like youâre holding wood instead of a person.
Kana comes up behind you, crouching in a manner that youâre sure is unfairly graceful before putting a hand on your elbow. They still donât speak, probably more acutely aware now than ever about how dangerous it is, but their thumb brushes comforting, silent patterns across your arm. Sebastian, at almost the same time, reaches a hand down to your sister, who takes it with a smile as she catches the look of concern on his features.
With all seven of you, it barely takes a few more seconds for the pain--now reduced to a feeling like slightly-too-hot shower water rather than anything truly dangerous--to drain away completely, leaving Liam spark-free and flushed as his face remains buried against the front of your shoulder.
For a moment, you all just breathe.
Then you hear movement. Footsteps, maybe, or something else; youâre sure Rory and Sebastian can hear it more clearly even if the result is a bit of a headache down here.
âAre you good?â Sebastian asks, looking between you and Liam. As soon as you nod, he lets go of your sisterâs hand and goes back to trying to find a way out, and one by one, the others go to help.
You notice Liam trembling slightly in your arms as they all move away, and for a horrifying second, you think he's still in pain. But youâre still holding him, and you feel nothing except the heat of his breath where itâs trapped between you.  Youâre about to ask whatâs wrong when he speaks, quietly as always but somehow smaller.
âTold you you shouldâve left,â he says, and his voice breaks on the last word. You have a feeling from the tone that he was going to continue and couldnât. You hold tighter.
âLiam Michael Cowles,â you say thickly, dropping your forehead helplessly onto his shoulder, âwe are not going to leave you. Donât even joke about that. Youâre a part of this team--â (family, you think) â--and youâre my friend, and I wonât leave you behind for anything.â
His breath hitches in your ear. You pull back just enough that he has to put an arm down to hold himself up as you move your hands to press against his face.  âWhateverâs coming,â you say, âweâll face it together.â
You smile at him and long for the day when he wonât be surprised to hear you say heâs a part of you.

Another prompt for @speakergame, this time from @taliaferros, who requested dealerâs choice for kisses + Rory.
Neither Rory nor Speakerâs gender is specified. How did I go over a page without using third person pronouns? Very careful epithets, I guess. I hope you enjoy!
43. a kiss on the stomach [dealerâs choice] + Rory
At some point during this whole mess, youâve migrated from perching vaguely in the general vicinity of the couch (Bas had been the one to point out helpfully that what you were doing could not technically be qualified as sitting, and Li backed him up, the little shit, as if Li ever sat properly on any flat surface, eitherâ), to reclining against the couch from the floor, to lounging with your back on the couch cushions while your legs are slung over one arm of it, kicking idly in the air every so often.
The book youâre flipping through, searching for information without reading too deep into any one part, is thick enough that holding it over your face probably should have been making your arms hurt after this long. Â But a combination of the endurance your lifestyle forced on you and the weird trance that came with having a goal means that you really donât notice. Â You also donât notice that the room has grown dark enough that youâre now holding the book a little too close to your face in order to see.
And you definitely donât notice anyone approaching you until something warm and solid clamps around your ankle.
You wish you could say that you have the kind of self-control not to immediately kick whoever it is, but that would be a lie. The only reason the person isnât injured and shoved off of you is that itâs Rory, and Rory uses the Change-bestowed super strength for very important things, like holding your foot in place when you reflexively lash out.
âDinnerâs ready. Â Even Li and your sister are goinâ to get some,â Rory says, letting go of your ankle and bracing that hand on the arm of the couch once it becomes clear you recognize whoâs standing in front of you. Â And itâs not like registering that was hard, not with Roryâs bright hazel eyes and distinctly warm touch and golden curls that remind you of gold-crafted-things if they were depicted naturally, genuinely, attractively, instead of perfectly.
You can feel yourself starting to blush, realizing where your brain is going (weâve talked about this, dammit, the whole weaving-elaborate-metaphors-about-the-cute-were-person-at-the-worst-moments thing! you chide yourself). Â And, like any sensible person, you quickly drop your own book onto your face to hide it. Â The exhale that accompanies your groan floods your senses with old book smell.
âIâm coming,â you start to say. Â Rory moves in front of you, the couch creaking under the shift of weight. Â You can hear Rory hum skeptically and you roll your eyes, even though the gesture is lost under the book. Â Gathering it up and groping around for the bookmark that had been in here before, you are distinctly not looking at Rory as you continue, âIâm serious! Â I just got caught up inâwait, Roryââ
One of the couch cushions dipping was your first clue that Rory was up to something, and you look back just in time to see that head of brushed gold curls leaning over the arm of the couch and dangerously close to your stomach. Â Despite your protest, you donât have time to push back or squirm away before Roryâs lips land on the part of your stomach exposed by your ridden-up shirt, blowing the most ridiculous raspberry just under your navel.
You shriek with laughter and protest in perfectly equal parts, pushing against Roryâs thighs with your socked feet. Â Later, youâll tell yourself that you successfully dislodged the werecreature yourself (because thatâs totally a thing your normal, human-strength legs can do), but youâre pretty sure that itâs actually just because Rory was laughing so hard that keeping the seal between lips and skin was impossible.
You swat Roryâs shoulder. Â âI said I was coming.â
âI know,â Rory answers, head turned to the side, cheek pressed against your skin, breath slowly catching. Â Which Rory should be very fast at, youâre pretty sure, so whyâOh. Â âI just wanted to.â
âRude,â you huff, not meaning it, as your own breath suddenly seems a little thin.
Rory grins, stands, and offers you a hand up, and you think you might forget how altogether.
Title: Wide Open
Summary: Sometimes, fighting is a very serious business, and sometimes...this.
Warnings: None.
Notes: This is just a short piece for some specific trope-loving friends on the @speakergame Discord server, which you can find in the pinned post on that blog. This story assumes nothing about either Speaker or Roryâs gender, only that Speaker is shorter than Rory.
Also here on AO3.
It wasnât like there was a whole lot else you could do. Yeah, maybe it wasnât the smartest decision in the world, but Rory was protecting your sister, and that meant your instincts said to protect Rory, who was now wide open. It was just that simple. Never mind the fact that Rory was both taller and stronger than you, especially now, after everything. And never mind the fact that you didnât have a weapon at this point.
You just needed a little more time for the others, and whether you had to buy it with your fists or your words wasnât nearly as important as making sure you all got out safely.
âHey, no,â you heard from behind you, just at the same second that you felt two warm hands circle your waist and lift. A clumsy imitation of a dance move you were pretty sure youâd seen done before, except this was both exasperated and a little more desperate. You turned around as soon as you could, looking up into Roryâs eyes (and definitely not getting lost in those freckles, not in a situation like this, no matter how cute the blush growing behind them was).  âMy turn to be your knight in shining armor, highness.â
The playfulness in Roryâs voice, the little joke youâd had since that first meeting, struck you with something that felt a little like an adrenaline jolt and a little bit like seeing Rory for the first time all over again. It was simultaneously invigorating and disorienting, especially with the way the alley backlit those honey-brown curls.
And then, the whole moment shattered, as Rory smirked and added, âAlso, youâre too short for anyone to take seriously as a human shield.â
âWhat--â you started to say, only to realize abruptly that despite Roryâs back being between the two of you and your foe, absolutely nothing had happened. Except that you could hear your sister, behind you, laughing, as what sounded like badly-repressed giggling quickly escalated into a full cackle, if only for a moment.
You looked over Roryâs shoulder--rather, around Roryâs shoulder--to see the others nearby, as well as what you were fighting, now wrapped up neatly in some actually pretty sick violet chains. The moment you made eye contact with Li, all you got was a shrug.
âWe didnât want to interrupt,â was the reply.
âIt was cute!â said Azalea, seeming for all intents and purposes completely genuine, which only made it worse because you knew the other three were not.
âUgh,â you groaned without heat, flopping forward dramatically so that your forehead fell on Roryâs chest before waving a hand vaguely in your friendsâ direction. âYouâre welcome.â
To your surprise, you felt the press of skin against your own as Rory ducked down, face pressing into your neck as you were enveloped in a quick but breathtaking hug.  âThank you.â
@speakergame story of the day 2/4, letâs go~ This one is for any prompt (I chose 44. cheap) + Rory! I havenât written a lot about Rory mostly because we donât know a lot about Rory, and I know there will be some delicious angst involved, but since I can only speculate on the source of that angst at the moment, Iâm going to stick to some first-impressions type stuff.
At the first words from this personâs mouth, the first words that come to your mind are, cheap, followed immediately by, worry. Youâve been approached by random strangers with weird pickup lines at questionable-quality motels more times in your life than you care to admit, and this is a little too close to that for comfort.
But the person keeps talking, and then all you can see is tousled, almost-gold-when-backlit hair and eyes that youâre not sure if theyâre green or brown or something in between, but you know that they are unbearably earnest. Maybe letting your guard down here is a stupid decision, but itâs hard to hear the warning sirens over the sound of that smile.
Youâll probably never see this person again, you think. It canât hurt to be a little friendly in return.
Well, tumblr deleted the first version of this post from my drafts, so Iâm trying it again. This is another story for someone on the @speakergame Discord server for any prompt (I chose 44. cheap) + Rory. I havenât written a lot of Rory because I feel they are the character I understand the least, but I hope that changes. Hereâs some first-impression-y type nonsense for you ^_^
EDIT: aha, I finally realized which person in my notes this fic was requested by, and itâs the lovely @starkhavn! This is for you.
At the first words out of this personâs mouth, the first words that pop into your mind are, cheap, followed by, danger. There have been far too many weirdos at motels in the middle of nowhere like this who use stale lines like that to try and get your attention--and never for a reason youâre exactly okay with--for you not to be a little on edge.
But it doesnât stop there, and the more you listen to this person stumble their way through what you think is supposed to eventually be a regular greeting, the harder it is not to notice how earnest the eyes that go with it are. How their color is warm, not sharp and predatory, though you canât tell exactly what it is with the lobbyâs backlighting through the doorway.
Maybe itâs a stupid idea to let your guard down like this, but itâs hard to hear the warning bells in your head over the sound of that smile.

Hereâs some more @speakergame micro-stories! This one is for 42. savior + someone of my choosing, and Iâm choosing Rory.
Rory had been unsure of a lot of things lately. Ever since what happened, since going on the run, it hadnât been easy to accept help because the wall of fear in their mind was too high to reach across, and honestly, Rory had kind of assumed that it was just going to be a case of running and scraping by until...
Well, that sure hadnât happened exactly right, not with this Speaker and Seer showing up. They were strange, and they werenât alone, and they had gotten to Rory at a moment when the wall had already been broken through. It was all too perfect, too good to be true, for a savior to just appear like this.
Rory was still afraid, really. Itâs just now, that fear was turned outwards towards these people. Theyâd be the ones to get hurt when the shattered wall came tumbling town. Being free of that fear wasnât worth it when Rory would just be alone atop the debris, the crushed bones of the kindest people who just got too close.
Hello đ I would love to read a story for Spots to kiss 15 with Speaker and Aurora. Thank you so much for doing it đ
Thank you for asking! This turned out a little short, but it was just so sweet that I didnât want to drag it out. I hope you enjoy it~
Speaker here uses they/them.
15. a kiss on the jawline + Aurora
Okay, so, it wasnât like Aurora meant for this crush on the literal person of her dreams to go from 0 to 60 in a single conversation, but in her defense, what else was she supposed to do with that? Being literally pulled from what felt like the brink of death (and, to this day, Aurora still wasnât a hundred percent sure what would have happened otherwise because Li was pretty vague about itâwould she have still Changed, or would she just have bled out?) mightâve given her a little rose-colored tint when it came to the Speaker, sure. Â But then there was the fact that the Speaker was charming in just the right way, too, and relentlessly good.
So, again, she asked herself with a giddy sort of helplessness: what was she supposed to do with that except fall head over heels?
The answer was nothing, thanks very much, and Aurora wouldnât change it even if she could.
The luckiest part for her, she thought, was being loved back. Â Never mind that Aurora had never dreamed of settling down, that she didnât have much in the way of a home besides this cobbled-together family, that she was Changed and struggling with it, or that meeting her might have been the beginning of the darkest chapter in their livesâthe Speaker loved her back.
It was something Aurora would never take for granted.
This did not, of course, exempt her from being impulsive about showing it. Â Putting up with the inevitable gagging noises from Li, cooing from Azalea, and fond eye rolls from Sebastian and Kana (not to mention the teasing from Speakerâs own twin) was a completely fair and valid price to pay for kissing her Speaker just because. Â It wasnât even a messy kiss, really, so the others didnât have any room to really complain. Just Aurora leaning over and smiling into their hair, and then when they inevitably turned to ask what Aurora was doing, pressing that smile into the skin under their ear.
âNothing,â Aurora said as she pulled away, feeling warmth bloom across her face as she caught sight of the Speakerâs smile.
That was a lie, of course; it was everything. Â The look in the Speakerâs eyes, bright and soft and very much saying, I see you, told Aurora that they understood. Â She settled back down with her head on their shoulder, still grinning, because reallyâwhat else was she supposed to do?
Hello Risu darling! ⤠SPOTS TO KISS 49 with Aurora Kane and Ellie if you would be so kind 𼰠I feel like Rory with all those freckles has a lot of very kissable spots there for sure, haha đ I'd like to give you creative freedom on this but I expect both girls to be mad blushing. (Rory because it's what they do and Ellie because she has serious case of gay panic wjdopq) Thank you! đ
This was lots of fun to write, honestly! Thank you for the request, and I hope I got Ellieâs characterization pretty close.
In case the kiss location doesnât give it away, this gets a little steamy, but nothing warranting an E rating on AO3 actually happens. Iâm just being suggestive, though honestly, I could probably be persuaded to continue this at some point if thatâs something people are into.
49. a kiss on the inner thigh + Ellie/Aurora
âAre youâŚâ Rory said, voice still a little fuzzy with sleep as she shifted to look at Ellie over her shoulder, ââŚAre you just drawing constellations on my freckles?  Seriously?â  A grin broke over her face despite the blush that followed it only a second later (and that was how Ellie knew she was really awake).  âPretty clichĂŠ, ainât it?  Not that Iâm complainâ, âf courseâŚâ
âI donât know⌠ That sounded like complaining,â Ellie answered, voice rising a little as she teased.  She pushed herself up on one arm, which was also the exact moment she remembered why they were in bed together and that it had something to do with her sister and Li teaming upâŚ
Ellieâs heart kickstarted like someone had jumped it, and all of a sudden, she could feel herself blushing just as hot as Rory seemed to whenever they were close, except this was probably way more noticeable than usual because it wasnât like she slept in her makeup. Â Internally, she swore at herself, because really? She and Rory were together now, technically, and theyâd kissed and everything, and yet, somehow, just waking up together in a bed (where nothing else had happened!) was making her light up like a paper lantern?
âSee something you like?â Rory asked, and Ellie groaned.
Youâre making it worse, she didnât say. Â âYeah, these sheets. Â Bland, low-threadcount off-white is my favorite.â Â She couldnât get through the sentence without laughing, though, and when she dipped her head, it nearly brushed Roryâs collarbones. So sheâd just be blushing forever or until she combusted, whichever came first. Â Fine, I guess.
Luckily, Rory was laughing, too, arms coming up to bracket Ellie into a hug. Â The mortification of being such a (self-proclaimed) disaster didnât leave, but it was easier when they were both pink and breathless with laughter, feet tangled in the stupid sheets. Â Rory had shifted so that Ellie was lying between her legs and half on her torso, and Ellie could feel the shifterâs heart under her own. Â It was beating just as fast. Â So, when they finally settled down and Rory said brightly, âSeriously, though, you didnâ hafta stop,â Ellie couldnât help the little rush of courage it gave her.
âWell,â she said, shifting lower on the bed as she went, âif youâre sureâŚ?â
âIâm game if you are, Ellie,â Rory said, equal parts teasing and serious as she pushed herself up on her elbows to follow Ellie as she ducked out of sight.
Li had mentioned at one point that Roryâs freckles were, in fact, everywhere that Li had reached in a medical examination, but it was one thing to know that and another thing to be literally faced with the map of them across Roryâs skin, like flower petals in a wind storm or (it was clichĂŠ, but) stars in the sky.  Ellie traced her fingers in a whimsical swirl up the front of one thigh.  From the knee to the hem of her sleep shorts and then back down on the other leg, pillowing her cheek on the one she had just touched.  Her fingers passed over Roryâs scars, too, and maybe there would be another time to explore those, but for nowâŚ
Before she could think better of it, Ellie turned her head and softly kissed a cluster of dark freckles.
It was only when the muscle under her lips twitched and she heard Roryâs breath catch in her throat that Ellie remembered to be embarrassed about being that forward. Â Then again, it wasnât like Rory had been resistant at all to having Ellie between her legs, so despite her blush returning with a vengeance, she just looked up through her lashes and sparked a smirk. Â âThis okay?â
âYes,â Rory said quickly. Â Quick enough that the smirk on Ellieâs face only burned brighter because making Rory sound like that was well worth pretending like she wasnât dying inside from how attractive this woman was.
Hopefully, she thought as she slipped a hand under the hem of Roryâs shirts and chased it with another kiss, sheâd have all the time in the world to get used to it.
