If the democrats leave that changes the majority number of votes needed to elect the speaker. If all 212 democrats leave, McCarthy would only need around 111 republican votes to win speaker.
It's the same if they would start voting present, because that also removes the vote from counting and lowers the threshold.
Interestingly, if enough McCarthy Republicans would for some reason start voting present, Jeffries could win.
Matt Gaetz has switched his vote for speaker 5 times in 11 ballots. Once for Biggs, twice for Jordan, thrice for Donalds, twice for Trump, once for Hern, and once for Trump again.
At this rate, on the 619th ballot he will have voted for every Republican in the House except Kevin McCarthy. By the 1217th ballot, he will have voted for every member of the House, Democrat and Republican alike, except McCarthy (hopefully they'll have held a special election to fill Donald McEachin's seat by the 1220th ballot, or else Gaetz will have to bite the bullet and settle for McCarthy). If we assume an average of 4 votes a day, he'll run through all the Republicans the first week of June, and Democrats by early November.
Hakeem Jeffries will still be sitting at 212 (briefly up to 213 when Gaetz gets around to him, then back down to 212)

Steve Scalise has withdrawn from the House Speaker race. Gym Jordan is back in the race despite the fact that he lost the last time the GOP caucus chose a candidate.
CNN spoke with GOP former Rep. Fred Upton. He basically said that he was relieved to be back in Michigan with his wife and grandkids these days.
House Republicans are meeting again on Friday afternoon. But a number of them have already stated that they would not support Gym Jordan for Speaker.
