The next few decades’ worth of space crop projects will lay the groundwork for future generations to thrive.
NASA hopes that in the future, these and similar systems will be used to help train AI algorithms that can be used on the ISS, and Gateway, an outpost that will orbit the moon as part of NASA’s Artemis space program. But according to the agency, “more work needs to be done before we can be confident that the crews we send to Mars will have a healthy and fully functional food system to accompany them on their journey.”
Along with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), NASA is also currently investigating the use of microgreens—small, nutrient-dense plants that can be easily grown and eaten without the need for extended crew involvement. Numerous space crop research projects are also underway, including the Vegetable Production System (Veggie), a garden on the ISS that astronauts use to study microgravity’s effect on plants.
Another, the Advanced Plant Habitat (APH), is a fully automated growth chamber used to harvest and conduct real-time research on plant crops. Because of these and similar projects, NASA has become a pioneer in space crop research and solutions.

Extreme Pizza at Space Farms Zoo & Museum - County Road 519 in Sussex, NJ
You’re probably wondering why I would ever consider getting pizza at a zoo. In Sussex County. Well, the answer is....I didn’t! I got this picture from my sister, who went to see the Llamas with my family and for whatever reason they decided to get pizza. You’re also probably wondering what kind of pizza this is, because it almost looks like it has eggs and bacon on it. However, it is actually a BBQ Chicken pie with sweet BBQ sauce, red onions, fresh cilantro, and mozzarella. I know, it looks gross. However, I had a slice that was leftover and it was surprisingly tasty! The BBQ sauce was tangy and not too strong while the onions added a nice flavor, albeit a little too heavy in spots. Honestly, the next time I get back to Space Farms, I’m going to try one fresh!

Space Farms

Space Farms in Sussex was a lot of fun. Our adventure day had as many creepy encounters as it did fun and uplifting ones. When you park across the street (at the taxidermy office) you think it doesn't get any creeper until you actually cross the road and enter the tall roomed filled with dead stuffed animals. At first your brain is like "HEY RUN FOR THE HILLS" which is actually possible because Sussex is filled with beautiful hill and mountain formations. Any way just when you think thats as creepy as its gonna get you enter the room which is filled with what can only be described as the organized hoarding room. And what was collected? Dolls and dead animals in jars of course! The shelves packed with jars; dead cats floating in a fruit salad jar from the 1940s side by side with calf embryos and snake heads, it isn't exactly easy on the stomach. But its cool in like a mad scientist kind of way. Anyway, the rest of the farm is really cool. It was awesome to interact with animals in a new way. They are all so familiar with humans so they will come up to you and let you touch and feed them it was awesome to get to connect with them in that way. On the way home I was drawn to this small shop in a town we were passing through. When we got there i was about to say "i don't know why were here lets go" but something in my head was saying "Go inside your here" so i did. When i entered the shop there was a basket with "comforted crosses" it was sort of out of place in the store but all the sudden everything clicked. The dream i had last night of my pop-pop, being drawn to the shop, the crosses. The last time i saw a comfort cross was in my pop-pop's hands. He was describing how he never knew what to say when he prayed and this was his way of praying without saying any words he would hold it and be comforted. It was an awesome feeling to think i was actually drawn to this store to see this. Was it just a coincidence? i don't think so. I haven't ever seen one. It was an awesome feeling to end our Adventure day on. We stopped at this ice cream place called ' The Sprinkle Shack' on the way home. It really was an Amazing day. The traveling made me realize that i really want to make a photo book and travel across the country. I love the back roads and the people you come across on the way and the feelings that you encounter. Im currently trying to come up with photo book ideas and a way i could afford a trip like that. Its exciting how a small trip could mean so much.
