Me headcanon for the fire nation royal family is that it has always been dysfunctional, the previous avatars ignored this because they had more important things to worry about and thought that there was no way this could lead to world ending threats.

I'm pretty sure he just kinda snapped when Kyoshi/Raava chose Roku instead of him (since he was born on the same day as Roku, which was also stated in the show)
