idk if this is considered an unpopular opinion but I hate when I see fics on Azula redemption or Zuko's reign and it's written in a way that makes it seem like the Fire Nation hates Azula. Azula was the pride of the Fire Nation and royalty, the Fire Nation wouldn't have hated her. If anything, they would've felt like it was some sort of injustice that Azula was removed from the throne. Y'all have to remember that Zuko was seen as a traitor of the Fire Nation. If anything, people would've hated HIM in the beginning and even towards the middle of his reign.
Deconstructing colonialism takes a long time. Truth be told is would take DECADES for the Fire Nation to dislike Azula and even after decades, she probably would still be socially acknowledged for her prowess and dedication to the Fire Nation by many.
It would go something like this:
"Yeah, Azula capturing Ba Sing Se was bad, but you can't lie, she did in 3 days what General Iroh tried to do in 600. That's fucking amazing."
That's how people talk about some conquerors now, why wouldn't they talk about them like that in ATLA?
FYI: I deleted the last paragraph of this bc I didn't like what i wrote. I stand on everything else tho.😭
one billionth azula and azulon drawing done aaaandddddd boom. posted
Avatar dump because I feel like getting back into the fandom again 😭
In the show, Ozai's name is written with two characters that roughly translate to "full of arrogance", but was most likely chosen for its similarity with Mandarin 火災 (huǒzāi), meaning "conflagration", or more literally "fiery disaster". Iroh's name, meanwhile, sounds like a shortening of the Japanese name Ichirō (sometimes romanized Ichiroh), meaning "first son".
Azulon literally named his sons "firstborn" and "disaster".

I just realized that both Sozin and Azulon were unusually old when they conceived their heirs
I was looking at the avatar wiki because I was very confused how Sozin could be Zuko's great grandfather when he was 165 years older than Zuko (on average most people's great grandparents are only 60-90 years older than them)
I realized that both Sozin and Azulon ended up having their heirs much later in life than most people. Sozin was born in 82 BG and had his only son Azulon in 0 AG, at the age of 82. Azulon went on to have his sons Iroh in 45 AG, when he was 45 years old, and Ozai in 55 AG, when he was 55.
For comparison, Ozai had Zuko in 83 AG, when he was 28, and Azula in 85 AG, when he was 30. (We don't know what year Lu Ten was born or how old he was when he died, but I would guess he was about a decade older than Zuko which would mean Iroh had him in his late 20s or early 30s)
I just think it's a really odd thing that both Sozin and Azulon had children later in life(and at a very old age for Sozin) I know it was just because they wanted Sozin to be Zuko's great-grandfather and not his great-great-grandfather or his great-great-great-grandfather, but it's still a weird little detail
To compare, Zuko was 51 when his grandson Iroh wwas born in 134 AG, which is younger than his grandfather was when his younger son, Ozai was born
BG astands for "Before Genocide", referring to years prior to the Air Nomad's genocide.
@trashfactorysstuff We did it for a long time ago.... But is still intresting to saw it! Even if my part isn`t a canon thing phphphhp because i taken japanese references for fire nation people. And there is my little au there is Azulon became a ghost and he is connected to Iroh :D
For some reason, I was fully convinced in S1 that Firebreathing was a specific talent that only very few powerful firebenders could do - and I thought the "Dragon" title was connected to that. I thought that Azulon (Dragon of the East?), Iroh (Dragon of the West) and Zuko were the only ones who were known to be able to breathe fire without the aid of Sozin's comet! Then I realised Iroh was laying siege to Ba Sing Se which is in the east, not west. And that all of this is probably just an unfounded headcanon RIP.
I have no idea what even gave me this impression. I thought it was a well known fact in-universe that Zuko was weaker in power in firebending compared to Azula, but had more weird fire quirks because he's so much more intrinsically connected to fire, and as fickle as it is too. Meanwhile Azula could always scoff how breathing fire was a weak and useless talent anyway. But it was at least something that Zuko could do (even if it was more an impulse for him rather than a trained move) identically like his uncle and grandfather, who everyone was supposed to revere. Something he'd latch onto as proof that he is of this bloodline, and that he might be worthy somehow. (Back when he was still in the toxic mindset).
