Today, under President Biden, Colombia is still of great importance for the U.S. and its geopolitical goals of hemispheric control. Colombia is part of the large SOUTHCOM (United States Southern Command) area of control. The country’s abundance of natural resources and cheap labor, proximity to the Panama Canal and Venezuela, and its access to both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans make it a key partner in the region.

ATLANTIC OCEAN (November 17, 2019) -- United States Navy Freedom-variant littoral combat ship USS Detroit (LCS 7) conducts high-speed operations while traveling at speeds of more than 40 knots (46 mph / 74 kph)....

....appearing to almost fly across the surface of the sea.

The very fast and flexible compact (3,500 tons; 378 ft / 115 m in length) warship, and her crew of 70, is deployed to the U.S. Southern Command area of responsibility. With embarked helicopter and U.S. Coast Guard law enforcement detachment, USS Detroit will provide major support to counter-drug patrols and detection and monitoring of illicit traffic in the Caribbean....and, later in the deployment, in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Venezuelan Jet “Aggressively Shadowed” US Aircraft

US Southern Command reported that a Venezuelan Jet “aggressively shadowed” a US Navy EP-3 aircraft. Venezuela claims it flew over Venezuela’s air space.

The Venezuelan jet was a Russian made SU-30 flanker jet, which shows that Russia is still propping up the Maduro government. Senator Marco Rubio made the comment that “Venezuela only has 3 jets that can fly. If they ever harmed any US…
