Vivian feels called to itβthat horrid puddle in the forest.
The banks are muddy and freezing, the rocks grind her feet down in her shoes, and thereβs not a whisper of comfort to be found.
But itβs the one place where her father canβt find her, and the one place where Arthur feels like what he is: a distant memory. Itβs not that she doesnβt love Arthur, because she does. She barely eats or sleeps for loving him. And nobody speaks to her, which is all well and good because sheβs never had friends and she doesnβt need them now.
She doesnβt need to talk to anyone about how exhausted she is from the manic love that consumes her every waking moment and her sleeping ones, too, as visions of Arthur dance in her head nonstop. Sheβs perfectly fine, and everything is perfectly romantic.
Lakes are also famously romantic, which is surely why sheβs drawn to it. Not at all because it gives her a few moments of peace away from other people. A place where her thoughts can run by themselves without being spoken over.
The water ripples, the leaves rustle. Itβs calm. So calm.
Vivian closes her eyes and lays on the bank, uncaring of the mud on her dress. Perhaps, if she tries hard enough, she can have a nap.
Vivian screws her eyes shut harder.
Water rains down, and Vivian squeals as some undeniably evil-sounding laughter echoes through the valley.
βYes! I roam your world once more, Emrys! Fear me, for I will avenge my father and wreak destruction upon Camelβuh. What are you doing here?β
Vivian splutters and scoffs to her feet. A girl in a hideous golden dressβis that crushed velvet? How vulgarβstands in the shallows, carrying some stupid stick and frowning at Vivian as though sheβs had her afternoon ruined.
βI could ask the same of you! What kind of person rises from a lake? How indecent!β
The golden girl scowls. βIβm not a person, you fool. Iβm a Sidhe.β
βWell, yes, obviously,β Vivian huffs, βI didnβt very well think you were a he.β
Golden Girlβs scowl deepens. βAre you an idiot?β
Vivian gasps dramatically. βHow dare yββ
βNo, seriously. Are you? I knew you humans were sheltered, but most at least seem to know what I am.β
Vivian puffs up with offense. βIf anyone should know anyone here, itβs you. Or are you not aware youβre in the presence of royalty?β
Golden Girl giggle-snorts. Vivianβs mouth drops open.
βAs are you,β she manages through high, twinkling laughter.
Vivian arches a brow. βOh really.β
βCertainly.β Golden Girl steps out of the water and curtsies. βLady Sophia Tir-MΓ²r of the Sidhe, at your service.β
Vivian doesnβt falterβrather, she curtsies even lower and gracefully-er. βLady Vivian of the kingdom you are standing in.β
Sophia smiles sweetly, so much so that itβs slightly saccharine. βIs that supposed to impress me?β
βIt impresses most,β she says coolly, and is about to threaten Sophia with a swift beheading when she steps closer. Her smile falls.
βOh.β She reaches out and grips Vivianβs chin between her fingers. Vivian squeaks.
βThatβs why youβre so stupid. Somebody spelled you.β Sophia tuts. βPoor thing.β
Vivian blushes furiously. βThis is absurd. Unhand me!β
βI donβt think I will. In factβ¦β Sophia hums and raises the ugly staff to her eye-level. βIβd quite like to see the real Lady Vivian.β
She murmurs something, her eyes glow red, and Vivianβs world falls apart.
She comes to moments later lying in the mud, which, under normal circumstances, would enrage her, but something is wrong. No. Something is right. Her head doesnβt hurt. The world is clear. And Arthurβ¦
βWhat an ugly twat!β She cries, slamming her palms into the bank and splattering mud everywhere.
βWhat a horse-faced bastard!β
She leaps to her feet, raging. βChicken? Flowers?! What girl wants chicken and flowers?!!!β She gasps and belatedly covers her chest. βHe saw me in my nightdress!β
Sophia smirks. βLucky him.β
βHe fought my father to the death, and he didnβt even have the balls to kill him! What a lily-livered codfish!!β
Sophiaβs brows shoot up.
βHow could I have humiliated myself so thoroughly? And on such a waste of a man?!β Vivian shouts, then stops in her tracks. βWait. No. Iβve spent years thinking about nothing but Arthur. Iβm not going to waste one more second on that addle-pated pillock.β
She turns sharply to Sophia. βWhat happened?β
βYou were under a spell,β Sophia says. βA powerful one. But lucky for you, Iβm very practiced in the art of love spells. Making and breaking.β
Vivian storms over and sticks her finger under Sophiaβs chin. βYou saved me. My mind is quiet. I bet I could sleep now. I could eat a proper bleeding meal!β
And with a start, she realises how tired she is, how hungry. Her entire body aches.
Sophia toys with a lock of Vivianβs hair. βYou could.β
βAnd,β Vivian says slowly, gaze fixed on Sophiaβs pink mouth, βI could have whoever I want.β
Vivianβs rather hot under the metaphorical collar, she realises. Sheβs been under a love spell for years, but it was just that: a love spell. No lusting required.
Vivian watches Sophiaβs elegant fingers follow the lock of hair down her chest.
βGoldβs a hideous colour on you,β Vivian flirts.
Sophia grins. Her teeth are slightly pointy. βYou should probably take it off me, then.β
