When Arthur starts sensing magic, he assumes the worst.

After all, magic is evil. Magic destroys kingdoms. Magic killed his mother.

At least, that's what he's always been told.

The first thing Morgause noticed about her was the dress.

Not because it was beautiful, though it was, in the unassuming way of things that had never been made to impress anyone; brown wool, faded at the hem, sleeves rolled back from the wrists, a little crooked where someone had mended the seam with thread that did not quite match. It had been washed too many times and worn through too many winters, and there was a tiny patch near the knee where the fabric had been repaired so neatly that Morgause only noticed it because she was looking for imperfections.

She had always been good at finding them.

The dress moved differently from the gowns of Camelot, without the stiffness of courtly fabric or the deliberate elegance of clothes chosen for an audience. It belonged to someone who worked with her hands, someone who did not expect anyone to look twice at her, someone who had places to be and things to do and little patience for whether any of it appeared graceful.

Morgause found herself looking twice.

She had come to Ealdor expecting nothing more than a brief stop, a village that would blur into the dozens of others she had passed through in her years of wandering, but there was something about the woman standing outside the small cottage that made the whole place seem suddenly quieter.

She was carrying a basket of herbs.

That was the second thing Morgause noticed.

The third was the way she looked up.

There was no fear in it.

That surprised Morgause more than it should have.

Most people knew who she was before she had to introduce herself. They saw the armour, the sword, the bearing of a woman who had spent too many years in royal halls and battlefields, and they immediately decided whether they ought to bow, retreat, flatter, or lie.

This woman merely looked at her.

Then she said, "You're blocking the path."

Morgause blinked.

There were perhaps a hundred responses she could have given to that, most of them sharp enough to make the woman reconsider her courage, but instead Morgause stepped aside.

"Apologies."

The woman walked past.

And Morgause, who had faced armies without hesitation and kings without lowering her eyes, stood there for a moment with the absurd sensation that she had somehow lost an argument she had never agreed to have.

She watched the woman disappear into the cottage.

Then, very quietly, she laughed.

It was ridiculous.

She did not even know her name.
