Garrus and Shepard "Guardian", please?
A/N - Itās been a while since I visited this olā ship. I hope you like it!
Shepard looks different when sheās asleep, Garrus thought as he looked down into her sleeping face. Younger. Softer.Ā
Sleep had eased the tension from her face and smoothed away the worry lines that so often creased her brow. It had lifted the burden from her shoulders that she carried day by day, and allowed her, for a few hours at least, to have some measure of peace. She looked the better for it, but she also looked fragile, as though her body were made of glass and the slightest touch would shatter her into a million shards.
Tentatively, so as not to wake her, Garrus eased a blanket around Shepardās sleeping form, so small beside his, and so incredibly slight despite all the strength she wielded on the battlefield. He tucked her hair behind her ear with a talon so tender that as it grazed her silken skin it barely tickled, and she only murmured in her sleep.
The soft murmur sent a cascade of warm feelings fluttering in his chest, and Garrus pressed his forehead to hers, wishing with all his heart that he could take her away form this, that he could spare them both from the coming war. From the pain and loss that would follow. The recriminations. The blame. Years of human kind pointing fingers that, as history had shown him, the Alliance so readily leveled at the woman he loved.
He settled down beside her, snuggled close and folded her body against his. In the dark of her cabin there wasnāt a sound except the soft sigh of her breath, and the bubble of he fish tank. He curved himself around her protectively, as though to shield her from everything he knew would come, as though he could protect her in sleep as he tried to do in the waking hours.
āI swear,ā he murmured huskily to her as sleepiness overcame him.Ā āIāll find a way to keep you safe, Jane Shepard. Weāll get our happy ending even if I have to kill every single reaper to do it.
