favorite thing about them: of course what drew me to her at first was the tragedy, but I love that she's one of the few people immune to Verso's charm. she refuses to let that little weasel (affectionate) get away with essentially gaslighting her, and chooses to "see things as they are" instead of backing down and clinging to a comforting lie. did she go too far? well Verso seems to think her actions were justified, so who am I to contradict him.
least favorite thing about them: THAT THERE'S SO LITTLE ABOUT HER. GIVE ME THAT CUT PROLOGUE SANDFALL.
favorite line: "BULLSHIT. absolute BLOODY bullshit." is inconic LMAO. otherwise does cut content count? if so I like her "I—we trusted you!" line, because to me it shows that she does care about Verso but is actively trying to set her feelings for him aside.
brOTP: I've been thinking a lot about Julie teaming up with Lune and Sciel to bully Verso, or having a drink with Sophie in the chroma afterlife. I think she'd also have been good friends with Alicia, and I love the potential of Climon–Versulie double dates. Lumière isn't ready.
OTP: Versulie, of course. give me the tragic lovers, baby!
nOTP: I've yet to see Julie shipped with anyone but Verso lmao but I can't think of anything that would constitute a NOTP (okay except Maelle).
random headcanon: she has a good singing voice and Verso likes listening to her sing.
unpopular opinion: lmao well like Fen said liking her is the unpopular opinion :') I also don't think she tortured Verso for weeks or whatever fanon is (in fact I wrote a whole-ass manifesto about it).

Her parents had impressed upon her how important this event was, and that she needed to make a good impression with her first appearance, so there was to be no foolishness. She was wearing her best dress to match her parents and brother in their best outfits.
There were many people here who she vaguely recognized from other gatherings but whose names she didn't know, nor did she know if they were family or not. Many of them came up to her to say how quickly she had grown, what a pretty little lady she was becoming already, to pinch her cheeks and pet her hair, and to coo over the drawings in her sketch book when her parents prompted her to show them off.
They also spoke to Cédric but in a very different way. Apparently, he was the youngest person whose work had ever been displayed at one of these gatherings of the Painters Council. Cédric received the compliments and comments with an easy smile, though Aline saw it falter when he thought no one was watching.
Alicia: lurks on booktok. has a nicely curated tumblr page with inspo, moodboards, and poetry. writes and reads fic on wattpad.
Verso: does stupid tiktok challenges for the attention and had to be rushed to the ER after eating tide pods once. also has a secret tumblr where he shares his poetry and music. Alicia and he follow each other but he doesn't know she knows it's him.
Clea: posts photos of her artworks on instagram. the captions are always only the title and materials used, never anything personal. never responds to (or even checks) comments and DMs.
Sciel: instagram influencer though she doesn't see herself as such. actually talks to people unlike Clea. has an eye for finding beauty anywhere and shares photos, musings, and the occasional thirst trap.
Lune: maintains a popular fact-checking account on twitter and is a prolific wikipedia editor.
Gustave: on all the engineering (and rocks) subreddits. always takes the time to give clear and helpful answers, and signs off with "for those who come after." his most upvoted post is the one he made on r/relationships with a throwaway account.
Maelle: memelord. primarily active on tiktok (where she follows Verso and keeps egging him on), but is on all the other sites and runs the orphanage's official accounts. Gustave tries to be a responsible guardian and supervise her social media use, but she always bypasses his attempts at parental control.
Renoir: is a highly regarded member of a few art communities on facebook. still hasn't figured out messenger so keeps leaving his kids messages on his wall, to their utter chagrin (he's doing his best).
Aline: made a facebook account at the same time Renoir did but hasn't updated it since. her only post is a photo of her son's childhood canvas.
Noco & Monoco III: have a viral pet instagram account maintained by all three Dessendre children. a book deal is currently under negotiations.

This is for chapter 5 of Causality, with Writer!Julie having a totally chill chat with P!Verso about the adventures he and her painted self got up to:
She asks with visions. He answers with memories, and the context behind them he so badly wants to explain and she just as badly needs to understand. There is life. Then there is loss, so staggering a loss it mangles the mind. Friends. A frantic search for lost loved ones. Nevron enemies. Human lovers. Black dreams, white hair. Clea and the barrier. A dead man walking. Dualliste and the fortress. A dead man, walking.
Each passing recollection turns Verso's knuckles whiter as he grips the table's edge, gaze fixed to hers by chains of his own design. Everything pieces together into a play in Julie's mind. Combined with one vision left to suck up the air between them and a playwright's feel for storytelling, she sees the light at the end of the tunnel, and her lying eyes cannot prevent her from making out the train.
Bile wells on the back of her tongue. Oh, how she loathes being proven wrong.
What is eight months to twenty-six years? To sixty-seven? Julie had thought she made her peace with it, her dove sacrificing himself for his family, as excruciating a pill that was to swallow. She knows him, loves him so dearly for it.
But to sacrifice her.
Part of her wonders what her Verso would have done, had Alicia's guilt been heard by fate and her grave had taken his place. The lengths he would have gone to had Honoré not snipped the burning fuse to this bomb. For all the scioness' skill for realism, whether squinting hard enough would allow Julie to see where the Painter ends and the Painting begins.
Maybe this one had been a dove once, with all the gorgeous trappings of his plumage, fit for the cage. It is hard to hear cooing when they stand at two ends of a hall stretching over a century long. He sounds more like a magpie, with that scratch to his voice and the sorrow dripping from his every word. Looks it too, with his black and white streaks. Like the pen has run dry of ink.

Summary:
An upset candle, left unattended by a bribed servant late at night. That is the addendum The Forum added. The family would have already retired after the celebration, the other servants asleep in their quarters. Nobody would see the flame grow or know its carnage until death pounded at their doors.
Why this lethal act for such an innocent commissioner? The reason is simple - the young lady’s family had been confirmed by the confidant to be part of the Painters’ Council.
It would be simple enough to be passed off as an accident, if necessary, and so small a change that an impossible narrative would pose no true risk to poison the young lady’s mind. My version of the Story was given to her uncredited, and the addendum was locked away in The Forum’s library. They intended to take ownership of the fire if any in the family died as a result, to send a message to others on the Painters’ Council of the power a Writer can wield.

I had intended for this to go with a oneshot where Verso takes his own advice and imagines the things people of the past would say, talking to them one last time in camp before taking on the Monolith in act 2, but I never got around to finishing it... so you get the art!
Week 4 of @e33readingchallenge! I've been ill this week (boooooo) which meant that I got to stay in bed and read a lot of fic (yaaaay). I've been able to devour some lovely works for the challenge so far - recs under the cut.
Challenge Prompt: a fic you’ve already read once
Fic Title & Author: O Brawling Love, O Loving Hate by arumattie

Author's Summary: It had been a while since he'd last seen Verso—eight months, seven days, and ten hours—and even now, grief ate at him for what could have been. Gustave missed the feeling of his fingers in his hair, and he missed the sound of Verso's laughter; he missed falling asleep in Verso's arms and the heated kisses they once shared. A shuddering exhale slipped past his lips as he checked the time once more, the second hand ticking away his life like a heartbeat in his palm.
My Notes: I adore Phi's writing so much, so for this prompt was basically "Which one of Phi's fics shall I re-read?" I opted for this one, which is a Romeo & Juliet inspired tragedy, with writer!Gustave and og!Verso on the opposite sides of an escalating war. I love the way that the fic runs with the R&J theme, and the sense of inevitable tragedy threaded throughout.

When he returns from the continent newly alive and with the memory of his last moments ringing in his mind, all Lucien can think of is how he failed to protect Gustave in the end, and how he does not want to fail again. But looking after Gustave has always been a challenge, and it is made no easier by the fact that Maelle has all these memories of another life now, and a new brother, and trouble figuring out her priorities and how they affect those around her.
My Notes: Gustave/Lucien is such a delightful little angst-bomb of a rare pairing, and this fic is an in-depth examination of what a post-game reunion might look like for them. I love the way that this fic doesn't pull its punches about Verso's role in what happened to the canvas (and to Gustave himself).

My Notes: I love the creepy, eerie, horror-movie quality of Maelle's Ending, and it's one of my favourite settings to explore in fic - so, for this prompt, I thought I would swing the pendulum in a different direction and pick up a fic from my TBR list that had a nice, positive spin on Maelle's Ending instead! I love the thought of Verso being able to find some catharsis and healing in tending to a garden in the wake of all the destruction he nearly caused.

My Notes: I didn't have anything in my TBR list set in Verso's Drafts, so I went on a treasure hunt through the AO3 tags and found this cute little fic about wee!Verso going on adventures there. There's always something so melancholic about fics about Verso's childhood when we (as the audience) know the grim fate that awaits him, and I love that this ficlet gives us a little glimpse of some of the sweetness of his youth.

My Notes: I love the strangeness in this fic and the way that it makes you (and Alicia) doubt her own reality. In Verso's Ending, outside of the canvas, Alicia sees a man that looks exactly like Gustave, and is left trying to decide whether or not to interact with him. Alicia's sense of isolation and loneliness is so, so powerful here: I want to scoop her up and hug her.

Author's Summary: After making a promise to each other at the Canvas' edge, Maelle restores Lumiére to its former splendor, and Verso tries to live his life in it as simply and unobtrusively as possible. Too bad that Gustave absolutely hates Verso's guts, and Verso's blossoming feelings for Gustave are of a complete opposite nature.
My Notes: This fic may be the longest-standing resident of my TBR list, as I think I've been waiting to read it for around 11 months: I could tell it was going to be tailored right to my interests and wanted to be able to save it for a time that I could sit down and devour the whole thing more or less in one sitting. And, oh, it was worth the wait! The dynamic between Gustave and Verso is so crunchy here - it's jagged and difficult. The fic is from Verso's POV, and you're left with Verso trying to read between the lines of his interactions with Gustave and work out what's going on in Gustave's head. And there's a truly lovely about of yearning and pining from Verso. Such a great read, and I'm so glad that this challenge allowed me to finally sit down and read it!
