Summary:
An upset candle, left unattended by a bribed servant late at night. That is the addendum The Forum added. The family would have already retired after the celebration, the other servants asleep in their quarters. Nobody would see the flame grow or know its carnage until death pounded at their doors.
Why this lethal act for such an innocent commissioner? The reason is simple - the young lady’s family had been confirmed by the confidant to be part of the Painters’ Council.
It would be simple enough to be passed off as an accident, if necessary, and so small a change that an impossible narrative would pose no true risk to poison the young lady’s mind. My version of the Story was given to her uncredited, and the addendum was locked away in The Forum’s library. They intended to take ownership of the fire if any in the family died as a result, to send a message to others on the Painters’ Council of the power a Writer can wield.

I got around to this faster than week 1. In addition, I've included a few fics I generally recommend. Either I read them justtt shy of the challenge start date, or they didn't have room on the bingo card. (because I already had another fic lined up for it :))

Clea gives up on any attempt at subterfuge. “She was trying to make herself a friend like Esquie.”
“And she asked you for help? What, does she want a hedgehog made of nails to go with François?”
She will not punch her annoying brother in the face. “I volunteered,” she grits out, “And I don’t need a lecture in design from someone whose best friends are a wineskin and a wooden mannequin.”
Pre-Canon Alicia wants a friend and Clea helps her out. Really good interactions between all of the siblings when they were younger, very cute and happy in general.

ITS SO PEAK. Bites this, jumps up and down, rolls around spins. p!Verso talks to Renoir in the manor (or rather, at him) about what he thinks real Verso would think of him. Really, REALLY good Verso characterization. perfect amount of miserable, wet cat energy.

"You hated it," Clea reminded him. "Try painting something you like for once. Maybe something from your canvas."
"That old thing?" Verso looked surprised. Clea also wasn't sure why it came to mind — it had been a long time since they'd played in Verso's canvas. Perhaps she was just feeling nostalgic. It had been a long time since she painted with both of her siblings, and she never would again.
One of the first fics I've read that actively uses the work skin on ao3 to enhance the story and I LOVE it. Clea spends a totally normal day with her brother and sister and nothing goes wrong :)
A fic about traveling

“This was what I was hoping for,” Verso breathed. She had half a mind to tease him again—hoping for warmth and sun in France, in January—but refrained. Her boy looked infinitely brighter. “Clea hasn’t added anything to the water, has she?”
Aline uttered a surprised laugh. “No. And I’ve restricted your father to the deepest reaches of the ocean.”
“Good. Then it’s still safe to swim.”
Such a good, cute fic abt the family taking a vacation in a canvas. Every interaction is so domestic and fluffy, I loved it.
(After I finished it, I was like 'well...it's less about the traveling and more about the vacation, so I also read Snowbound Longing by MelissaSz89, a fluffy Verstave fic set in the mountains, for Gustave's first snow.)

Verso sat cross-legged across the loop of the train tracks. “You think I’m handsome?” he asked innocently, deflecting.
Verso and Julie travel to the mountains by train. Short sweet and very fluffy!

Horror, sharp and ice cold, poured down her throat and spread through her spine. She had missed that spot. How did she miss something?
Verso moved his bloodstained thumb to his face and sniffed theatrically. "Blood," he murmured. "You've gotten sloppy."
The cold horror flared and turned hot. Clea glared. Brat. She was going to finish what the fire started.
The gift I received for the E33 exchange. I absolutely love it. Clea and Verso taking care of each other post-fire (where Verso lives, but is injured). Without giving anything away, Verso and Alicia have trouble communicating because of their injuries, which makes it more tragic.

Verso seems the type to be well-acquainted with a good battle, given the strength needed to carry the mountain Julie approaches by the piano bench. She skims the titles. "Is this Chopin's whole repertoire? You could have saved yourself the trouble and brought the man himself."
He chuckles. "Aside from the price of necromancy, I don't have the strength to carry three men from my apartment. Liszt and Schumann are somewhere in there, too. Also some of my own compositions."
An AMAZING Versulie fic with og Verso and Writer Julie. You can probably already guess what inevitable mess that will cause. Lots of dramatic irony, and a sense of dread that builds as you know what approaches. I can't recommend this enough.

The final three lines are from denial of benefits paperwork for workers who died before the end of the mandatory five month waiting period. How many of those deaths are connected to poverty? I don't know, but I can guess.
