The one where Dean from the past meets Dean in the present. They're not sure they like each other very much.
Commentary: I’m down on my knees praying for this fic. I love it. It’s so good.
Dean gets hit with a curse, they seek Crowley for help and Crowley gives them a 24-year-old Dean to fix it. The story is set around season 15, but with a canon divergence: Dean and Cas have been secretly together (well, kind of) for a few years.
If someone told me that description on the previous paragraph, I might’ve laughed it off, thinking it would be a mess. It’s not.
The author shifts between POVs for Dean, Cas and Sam – and each of them is unique and completely in character. Each scene leads to the next in a way that you can tell how hard the author worked on this story.
Every character has something to do by themselves and with other characters – both Dean’s are struggling with being around each other, young Dean learns about himself and his family with Sam, Dean and Cas go through a rough path, young Dean gets to know Cas and slowly falls in love with him. Each one of them also goes through personal struggles, which show during their POVs.
They are all so smart! The author is either very smart or researched a lot, because each character shares so much knowledge about this that are so in character for them to be knowledgeable about.
The narration flows between present-day and flashbacks from Dean and Cas’ relationship and Dean’s life.
I found myself having to read the lines in this story as if I was mentally acting – putting intonation on the words – because I wanted to savor every detail of it. Every piece of dialogue is so well written and constructed that I felt like I’d be misusing the fanfic if I just rushed through it.

but they still had each other. They were in love. They were with each other in every sense that really mattered, weren’t they? Maybe they never said it, but they’d been it. They’d lived and breathed, fought and died for each other. For love.

The sheer calamity of it is almost funny. Dean spent twelve years pining over the guy, and now he’s trying so hard not to fall apart everyday to the memory of Cas saying “I love you.”
And what does that mean, anyway, if they were in love with each other the whole damn time?

It had to mean something, because Cas had used his dying breaths to tell Dean, had been so damn happy to die just to say it.
It meant everything.
It is everything. Dean is carrying it inside him everywhere he goes; Cas and his love.
