SZA speaks about being labeled an R&B artist despite her work in other genres.
I’m short, but I’m not small. Thanks to a large amount of muscle mass, I’m surprisingly heavy for my size, and while I’m not saying I don’t have some extra padding, I definitely don’t look like I weigh anything near what I actually do.
So when RTX wrapped up and I got lifted by a fellow Guardian into the air like I was nothing? That did a huge number to my self-esteem, in the positive direction, even if I panicked at the time because I was worried I’d hurt him. I’m still reflecting on it now, and how no matter how much confidence I have in my appearance, and how much I project being fine with how I look, deep down inside there’s a part of me that’s super conscious about my weight.
Thanks, society. You’re awesome for that.

Due to societal perceptions and stereotypes many people with bipolar disorder to do not seek help. They often fear being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and worry about the potential side effects of the medications used to treat this disorder. On average, there is a 10 year delay in the diagnosis of bipolar disorder from the onset of symptoms. This can lead to devastating consequences for someone's personal, professional, financial and social lives. Getting the right treatments earlier on can mitigate these negative outcomes.
We treat our patients using not only medications, but other non-traditional modalities. To book an appointment with us, click here or call us at 954-848-2814.
"Det. Lefebvre was a child-abuse investigator. She interviewed the children, and one of Sahar’s chief complaints was a lack of freedom.
Prosecutor Lacelle asked her, “How did Sahar appear?” and Det. Lefebvre replied, “Well, I was surprised. She said she had no freedom, but she was well-dressed, wore jewelry, had nice makeup. She did not seem depressed.”
And the detective told Sahar that: “I said, ‘no freedom?’. I said, ‘You’re well-dressed, have nice makeup.’”
Let that be a lesson for Canadian police, women’s rights activists, social workers and the like: The oppression of girls and women wears different faces, and some of them are beautiful, not battered, and some of them are beautifully made up. Birds in gilded cages are still in cages."
From a Christie Blatchford-written article in The National Post. I know, I know--I can't believe it either...I read something from The National Post AND it was by Christie Blatchford. Can't believe I agreed with so much of it either.
But that tells us so much about the perceptions of the world--here, a supposedly-trained child-abuse investigator questions someone's perception that they lack freedom--because they're wearing makeup and nice clothes. And this is a perception that goes to women as well--that a well-dressed, nicely-made-up woman couldn't be abused because if she has money...she'd just leave.
We still have so far to go.
