warning- strong language
draco saw her across the room for the first time at blaise’s hallowe’en party. she was wearing a simple black dress with black heels. nothing special- half the girls at the party were dressed in black dresses and black heels but she... she was radiant.
“blaise,” draco said, jabbing an extremely intoxicated blaise’s shoulder, “blaise!”
he turned around with slightly unfocused eyes, “draco!” he exclaimed once he had identified him, “you alright, mate?”
“fucking brilliant. listen- who’s that girl?” he pointed to you.
“oh that’s (y/n), she was in gryffindor a couple years below us i think.” he looked at draco, “are you into her?” draco didn’t answer but instead took a sip of his drink. “well let’s go say hi then!” blaise grabbed draco’s arm and dragged him towards her.
“(y/n)! you look gorgeous today,” blaise exclaimed. you turned around, whipping your hair over your shoulder and grinned at him, “and you’re drunk, blaise.” you laughed.
“listen, (y/n), i have to go, but this is draco- can you just keep him company till i get back?” draco took a moment to notice how smooth blaise was when he was fucked out of his mind. “sure,” you smiled, “hi, draco.”
“hi.”
“i wish that you and i lived in the sims we could build a house and plant some flowers and have kids but we're both at some trashy halloween party downtown and i'll probably never see you again”
“so where do you work?” draco asked as they escaped from the crowded dancefloor to the balcony where they had room to take a breath. you gulped some of your drink, “i’m a heath-potions researcher. basically i try to make new potions to help healers. i’m shifting to the states in a few weeks actually.”
draco raised his eyebrows in surprise, “that’s incredible.”
you laughed a high, clear laugh which rang in his ears, “so what do you do mr. bond? that is your costume, right?”
“it is,” draco looked at his shoes and raked his hand through his hair, “my job isn’t half as interesting as yours though- i just run my family business.”
“i don’t think that’s boring. i think it takes a whole load of guts and brains to run a family business.”
draco’s heart skipped a beat. in the half hour the two of you had spent talking, he could already see a future with you. he could see kids running around you as the both of you planted some flowers in your garden as the dog chased them around.
but you were shifting.
“yeah, ooh, goddamn i wish we would've met on another night, baby in another life,”
all draco could think through the night was how different it might have been if you had met the previous year. maybe he’d have asked you out.
maybe he’d have got that future he could see.
as you danced, laughed and drank with him he got more and more infatuated with you. he had never felt so strongly for someone he had just met this soon. he hated that he’d never see you again.
“i wish that we met walkin' round the moma. yeah, i'd say nice to meet you, 'stead of saying nice to know you, i'd try to impress you with some bullshit 'bout monet
...
and i wouldn't have let you slip away”
he thought of what would happen if you had run into each other at the museum for the commemoration for the second wizarding war.
he’d offer to buy you another coffee after bumping into you causing yours to spill on the floor. you’d smile and take him up on his offer.
the both of you would chat at the café for hours and then walk around the exhibitions where he’d astonish you with his understanding of lina’s work. where you’d be as awe-struck by him as he was by you.
where you’d see the same future as he did.
where he wouldn’t let you go the way he had to let you go now.
“i wouldn't have let you, i wouldn't have let you leave me”
you tottered in your heels as draco- quite inebriated himself steadied you and walked you out of the house.
“let me side-along with you- you can’t apparate alone like this, (y/n),” draco said to you.
you laughed, “okay, draco,” singing the last letter of his name and linked your fingers through his.
“hmm. definitely easier with you here,” you said once you had cracked back into existence in an unfamiliar neighbourhood which draco presumed was yours.
he didn’t let go of your hand as the both of you walked to your house continuing your conversation from the party. draco suspected you had apparated a bit away on purpose. of course it could have also been that you were drunk and just overshot by a bit.
when you reached your house gate, you turned to him and put your free hand on your tiny kissing gate- maybe you had dogs- and pushed it open. before you let could say goodbye and let go of his hand, draco pulled you in for a kiss.
short and fleeting.
a fitting metaphor for how the universe had aligned for him to meet you.
and as you smiled and turned to go inside, letting your hand slide out of his, all draco was think about was how if this was any other situation- he wouldn’t have let you go.
