I just went on a trip and came home and knocked out for 14 hours straight. How can I still be tired? I am so confused..
Fatigue is more than just a need for sleep.
The emotional and physical load of travel is more intense than the typical day-to-day energy depletion. There’s an unconscious tension you hold when away from your familiar, safe place/s that takes a toll over time - plus whatever sleep deficit or jet lag you may have accrued in the process of your travels.
There’s also the depletion that comes from protracted sleep, counterintuitively. 14 hours without food or water slows your body’s natural functions to preserve your energy and fluid reserves. Dehydration unbalances you at a cellular level. It’s taxing in its own way.
Stay hydrated. Eat slow-release energy foods (not quick sugar fixes). Limit caffeine and alcohol (if you are so inclined to imbibe either of those). Rest when you need to. Perhaps practice some mindfulness exercises to release any tension you’re still holding.
Travel is a joy. Sleep is necessity. But they both still have a price of their own. Be gentle with yourself as you pay it.
