So I was re-watching TEH and something really bothered me. Mary is a skilled assassin and she quickly figured out the skip code part, but why on Earth would she spend so much time by going to Sherlock and then asking for his help. I doubt that an person with so skilled as herself, she would have any problem finding John on her own. She could have saved so much time..
Hey Nonny!
This is just my speculation and theory, so you can take it how you want :)
I believe itās because it was a set-up to reveal Sherlockās feelings for John, as we see both at the end of the episode and in HLV, to whoever is actually pulling the strings (who I believe is Mary but again, I also think S4 is fake) and Mags plays a part in that. To do that, theyāve decided to literallyĀ āburnā Sherlockās heart. If it is Maryās doing, it only shows even more how cruel she is by allowing John to be a pawn so that she can verify Sherlock still loves John (and also perhaps as a subtle reminder to John:Ā āyou stray from your wife and youāre going to sufferā, since he was already showing signs of wandering⦠I guess shaving that mournstache set her off in a jealous rage, LOL).Ā
As well, she also saw Sherlock was distracted (when she let him āreadā her)Ā and she counted on his depression and distraction and her manipulation of their relationship to let her bring the code to Sherlock without arousing suspicion in him, and she knew it would spring Sherlock into action. His lack of hesitation therefore confirmed her suspicions, and her or whoeverās plan proceeded further.
Why depress Sherlock so much without killing him? Because for people like Mary and Moriarty, watching people physically suffer slowly is more pleasurable and enjoyable to them. Because Mary had her own game: to prove she Won John her trophy, and to rub it in Sherlockās face. Iām sorry, but highly-manipulative people like her do it all for their own self gratification. She watches Sherlock destroy himself, and it was all fun until her her prize was trying to leave her. Then she needed to eliminate the threat so that, when John grieves over Sherlockās death, he would be all over her once again. Itās sick and twisted, but if it worked the first time, sheāll do it again to get what she wants.Ā
So yeah, it was essentially because she likes watching Sherlock dance and suffer. The best way to destroy a person is to destroy everything dear and precious to them, beat them down emotionally and lower their feelings of self-worth, and then let fate take care of the rest.
