i'll get into it later but in a media landscape that is broadly so shitty both towards textual portrayals of women and bad faith audience/critic interpretations of said women, in adapting san giovanni battista the oratorio into st john the baptist the opera biern and nelson took a story with 5 characters, of which 2 are female, greatly expanded one of them without compromising the other, and gave them both such deliciously complicated depth and nuance that implies there's far more to them than exists within the confines of this stage and this narrow story. and it fucking kicks ass

had a dream last night i went to see the closing performance of sjtb. which is funny because i did actually already do that for real. anyway my dream version of the show was basically the same but as far as i can remember the only change was that in the execution there were the added sounds of one of those electric carving knife things and screaming
