i'll get into it later but in a media landscape that is broadly so shitty both towards textual portrayals of women and bad faith audience/critic interpretations of said women, in adapting san giovanni battista the oratorio into st john the baptist the opera biern and nelson took a story with 5 characters, of which 2 are female, greatly expanded one of them without compromising the other, and gave them both such deliciously complicated depth and nuance that implies there's far more to them than exists within the confines of this stage and this narrow story. and it fucking kicks ass
