The Phoenix Society of Historical Swordsmanship held our fourth annual Krampus Krieg Triple elimination tournament yesterday. It was Singlestick and a bag. The goal was 3-points. A hit to the head only counted for one point. OR, you could get your Krampus bag over their head and instantly win the fight. It was a lot of fun!

Judging & Mixed Weapons HEMA Fencing
A combination of Facebook posts about mixed weapons competitions and judgingĀ prompted me to write up my experiences with judging Icebreaker events.Ā This is all from personal experience judging individual events with ~35-50 competitors from multiple countries (Canada, USA, France) with significant prizes for medalists.Ā [large post ahead, images included]
Iām either the dude in yellow judging with the stick, or the dude in yellow with the messer.
There oughta be some way to make singlestick easier to judge. Could we maybe put some sensors on the stick, or something?

As a general rule, I don't fight in the tournaments that I organize. for two reasons. The first is simple, I want to be able to do things as tournament manager. Fixing issues, helping with problems and making sure everything runs as smooth as possible. On the other hand, it feels a bit strange to organize a tournament, get some nice sponsored prizes and than take home those prizes. I had a pretty good chance of winning, I absolutely had to work for it and both Nick, Henric and Daniel gave me great fights, but I was confidend I would place high when entering. I made an exception this year because I felt like I had an extra good reason to join. The charity I choose, The Ronald Mcdonald Huis Leiden, has a reason. Without going into details, two very dear friends of mine are in a situation where they have to use the service provided by the RmcD house and I see how much it is helping them. I wanted to do as much as I can for them and breaking my own rule was the right thing to do. We raised the massive amount of ā¬1200,-! I'm so proud of the whole event and especially the HVN members. I saw great fights, the atmosphere was great, people were happy and overall it was an enormous success!

Byronalia
A photograph of the fencing equipment of the British Lord Byron, originally published in Munsey's Magazine. On the wall can be seen Byron's basket-hilted broadsword, small-sword, singlestick, and fencing masks. According to Henry Angelo's Reminiscences, Byron began studying fencing with Angelo at the age of twelve; Volume Two of these memoirs contain several anecdotes referencing Byron's training with the foil and broadsword. Byron's physical habits are described on Wikipedia as follows: "He was renowned for his personal beauty, which he enhanced by wearing curl-papers in his hair at night. He was athletic, being a competent boxer and horse-rider and an excellent swimmer. He attended pugilistic tuition at the Bond Street rooms of former prizefighting champion āGentlemanā John Jackson, and recorded these sparring sessions, with the man he called āthe Emperor of Pugilismā, in his letters and journals. Byron and other writers, such as his friend Hobhouse, described his eating habits in detail. At the time he entered Cambridge, he went on a strict diet to control his weight. He also exercised a great deal, and at that time wore a great number of clothes to cause himself to perspire. For most of his life he was a vegetarian, and often lived for days on dry biscuits and white wine. Occasionally he would eat large helpings of meat and desserts, after which he would purge himself." Despite his reputation for being "wicked", rakish, and prone to scandal, Byron was a noted defender of Luddites, a vocal supporter of Catholic emancipation, and an early practitioner of vegetarianism.
