Could we have some fluff with Shennong with a nonbinary protagonist?
Okay so this went in a totally different direction than I thought it would I swear it was supposed to be all fluff - hopefully this is okay though~!
-----
âI could totally make that jump.â
Shennong pauses and shifts around in his chair, looking over at you with a raised brow. To anyone else, that sentence would have probably sparked some kind of concern, but Shenâs long gotten used to your comments and only hums and taps his pen to his lips in thought, glancing between you and the window youâre staring at.
âYou could,â he agrees, before quickly adding. âbut you wonât.â
You look away from the window and give him a pointed stare. âWhy not?â
âBecause you wonât make it to the window before me.â
Heâs got a point - youâre not at your best right now, so youâre pretty sure in the time it takes for you to actually get to the window heâd be up and out the chair to stop you. You frankly donât see what the big issue is; itâs just the first floor, so the drop wouldnât be that bad, but maybe thatâs just the cabin fever talking, given that youâve been bed bound in the infirmary for the better part of the day.
âBesides,â Shennong pipes up again, rolling his chair over to your bedside and giving your leg a gentle nudge. âYou still need to rest that leg.â
He barely touches you but itâs enough to make you flinch with a wince - itâs not broken or fractured, but still sore enough that itâs gonna keep you off of your feet at least for the rest of the day, and the thought makes you scowl in frustration. Youâd gone through the ringer in app battles - bruises, broken bones, hell even death didnât keep you from jumping right back up. So to get taken down just for landing on your feet the wrong way going down the stairs had you miffed at the sheer audacity of your own damned body to get bedbound for such a stupid reason.Â
Seeing your gloomy expression, Shennong gives you a sympathetic look and gives your leg another pat, being mindful of the injury; you mutter thanks under your breath, and try to turn your focus back onto the infirmary window. It wonât be long till school lets out as the skyâs already turning a telltale shade of orange that signals the coming end of the school day. When youâd gotten injured the teacher whoâd hoisted you up and carried you to the infirmary ensured you that someone would be by afterschool to take you back to your dorm; but, in all honesty, you donât know whatâs worse, being bed bound with a snarky school nurse for company or being bed bound alone in your room.
A beat passes in silence, and you hear Shennong leaning back over to his desk to fiddle with some of the bottles he was working on. You donât bother turning to watch him, instead letting your eyes follow the peachy clouds crawling across an orange sky beyond the glass. After a few more minutes, you say the first thing that comes to mind.
âYou know, Kengo did it once.âÂ
Itâs not a lie - though it was more so that he fell out of it rather than willingly jumped, but itâs enough to get the nurse to do a double take. Shen squints at your words, searching for a tell to show youâre bluffing; when itâs clear youâre not he retorts. âAnd if Kengo told you to-âÂ
âYes.â you donât hesitate, staring him dead in the eyes.
â...Youâre right; stupid question.â Shennong gives a deep sigh and leans to rest on his knees rubbing his temples.
âI forget youâre not the only student who likes getting into trouble.â
âHey!â you straighten up on the bed, expression aghast. âOf course Iâm not the only one! You say that like thatâs all I ever do.â
In response he lets out a low, drawn out whistle and tilts his head. âWellâŚâ he trails off and you narrow your eyes into a glare, arms crossing over your chest as you drop back onto the infirmary bed.
â...If I could stand right now Iâd tackle you off of that chair.â you only half-mean it because you know that heâs right (loathe as you are to admit it) and Shen waves a hand in your direction.
âAnd that is exactly what I mean.â
You grumble to yourself and press yourself further back, effectively sinking into the infirmary bed with a sour expression, watching him regard you with an amused smile that just screams that heâs teasing you. Thereâs another period of silence, but this one is broken far quicker when you mutter, voice quieting into a mutter as you stare down at your injured leg.
âI get into trouble - but itâs for a good reason.â
Shen only hums in response, but his tone is almost disbelieving and that just spurs you on to continue.
âWanting to protect people is a good reason - so I donât mind if it gets me into a bit of trouble.â
âWhat if it gets you hurt?â at his question you perk up, looking over to where heâs sitting. You pause for a moment, and when you discern that itâs a serious question you shrug and lean back, rolling over onto your side to face the window.
âIâm used to it, so itâs fine.â
âAnd if it gets you killed?â you knew that was coming, and yet hearing Shennong ask that gives you pause, and when he sees you physically tense up he pushes the question. âWill you still say thatâs fine?â
Perhaps itâs childish to refuse to answer, but you double down and avoid looking at him altogether, staring hard at the window and hoping that your lack of response will end the discussion. You refuse to budge, even when you hear his chair squeak and listen to the footfalls steadily rounding the side of the infirmary bed. Soon enough thereâs a pair of legs blocking your view of the window and you frown, craning your head to look past him and pretend heâs not looking down at you. When that doesnât work you huff and move to roll onto your other side, but a firm hand on your shoulder has you staying put as Shennong squats down so that youâre face to face.
âListen.â he begins with a sigh, expression surprisingly stern as he stares at you. âI know this sounds harsh, but you donât need me to tell you that youâre reckless. You run headfirst into fights with impossible odds and have to claw your way out time and time again - thatâs not easy, and the app doesnât heal everything you go through. If youâre not careful-â Shennong cuts himself off, watching your anger ease into a more forlorn expression; you understand.
âYou wonât be any help to the people you want to protect if youâre dead - fightingâs one thing, but you need to stay alive if you want a chance at keeping them safe. Take care of yourself - thatâs all I can ask.â
Youâre quiet for a long moment, meeting his gaze and flinching not from pain this time, but from the intensity that heâs squaring you with. Itâs not malicious however, and reminds you all too much of how Mr. Mononobe would look at you, firm but well-intentioned, and you have to swallow down the lump in your throat before you find the words.
âIs that the doctorâs advice?â Itâs a bad joke, but it successfully breaks the tension and the therian visibly relaxes, smiling as he answers.
âCall it advice from a friend.â
âAdvice from a friend, huh?â you parrot back, a grin of your own rising to your face. âI guess it doesnât hurt to listen to a friend...no promises about non-app battles though - if someone starts a fight I will finish it for them.â
âYeah, didnât think itâd be that easy.â he sighs, but after a beat of pause, Shen leans over and claps a large hand onto your head, making a show of mussing up your hair as he adds.
âYouâre a good kid.â
You give a half hearted grumble and duck your head away from his hand. âYeah, yeah, call me kid again youâre losing that hand.â
Shen only laughs at your reaction but stands up and moves back over to his desk once heâs sure youâre okay. You watch his back as he walks away from you before you focus on making yourself comfortable, flopping down onto the pillow and pressing your cheek into the plush fabric till you find a good position to lie in.Â
The sky outside has turned a deep mixture of orange and red by now, and you bide your time once again watching the clouds that roll by with a newfound fascination, enjoying the canvas of colors that stretches beyond the window till the familiar chime of the school bell finally arrives to pull you from your thoughts.
