Drawing of Simidele from “Skin of the Sea” by Natasha Bowen! I bought it at my school’s scholastic book fair last semester and absolutely fell in love with it 😍 it’s all about west African folklore, Yoruba orisas, and follows Simidele, a mami wata.
Do not be ashamed of who you are.

Nigeria’s Simidele Adeagbo Set To Make History In Bobsleigh
According to her, the feat is a testament to hard work, hoping it will inspire the younger generation of girls.
Simidele Adeagbo is set to make history as the first African to participate in bobsleigh at the BMW IBSF World Championship in Winterburg, Germany.
“This weekend I will make history for Nigeria🇳🇬 as the 1st African athlete to compete in bobsleigh at the BMW IBSF World Chams,” she wrote on her X account.
“This is the FIRST time ever the continent of Africa will be represented in bobsleigh at a World Champs in the 100 years since @ibsfsliding was founded.
“I want to take a moment to celebrate this significant barrier that took a century to break. Too often our historic contributions are not recognized, undervalued, and forgotten. So as we celebrate BHM, I’m honored to write another chapter in the new future of sport.”
According to her, the feat is a testament to hard work, hoping it will inspire the younger generation of girls.
“This first will be forever recorded in history, paving the way for greater access and inclusion in the primarily Eurocentric, male-dominated sport of bobsleigh. This historic moment is a testament to hard work and dreaming more than others think is practical,” Simidele wrote.
“As I break this barrier on the ice, through the work of the @simisleighsfoundation, I continue to break the barriers that limit women and girls’ opportunities to reach their full potential”.
Soul of the Deep picks up six months after the events of Skin of the Sea. The ajogun (the anti-gods) are threatening to break into and rain destruction and chaos upon the mortal world. Only Esu the Trickster can bind them and seal the gateway between worlds. Newly reunited Simi and Kola reluctantly form an alliance with the trickster god to save the world. This book moved much faster than the first book. The stakes were high almost from the start and the romantic and sexual tension from the star-crossed lovers was riveting. I could not put this book down. As far as sequels go, this is one of the best. This series as a whole is amazing. I absolutely loved it! I look forward to reading more of Natasha Bowen’s books going forward! 🧜🏿♀️🌊💘⚔️ #soulofthedeep #skinofthesea #ofmermaidsandorisa #natashabowen #simidele #adekola #esu #blackmermaids #mermaids #thelittlemermaid #books #read #reading #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/Ck6cUreA7d8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
Wrapping up 2021 with Natasha Bowen’s Skin of the Sea. This epic fantasy follows Mami Wata (mermaid) Simidele whose sole purpose is to bless the souls who die at sea and send them back to Olodumare, The Supreme Creator. When she strays from her task and saves the life of a boy thrown from a slave ship, she must embark on a journey of atonement to save her patron goddess, Yemoja, and her fellow Mami Wata from destruction. This beautiful story of love and courage introduces the reader to a wonderful cast of characters and a rich colorful world filled with fairies (yumbo), gods (orisa), and more. I’ve learned so much from this book but I know it’s only the tip of the iceberg. The Yoruba pantheon is extensive and there are many stories about each deity. Skin of the Sea only touches on a few. I look forward to learning more about the Yoruba and West African culture, to finding out what happens next for Simidele, and to reading more diverse stories in 2022 and beyond. 🧜🏾♀️🌊🧑🏾🦱👫🏾❤️ #skinofthesea #natashabowen #simidele #adekola #mamiwata #yemoja #mermaids #mermaidstories #diversereads #diversity #read #reading #books #bookstagram https://www.instagram.com/hillbill3491/p/CYAU-hTrmtQ/?utm_medium=tumblr
