Strong granite walls seem to easily contain the raging river, keeping the chaotic meltwater on its spiraling downward path. Although the spring procession is as normal and reoccurring as any other seasonal feature, it is this metamorphosis of life giving water, that often captures my attention. A giant circular adventure; falling rain and snow, flowing creeks rivers and oceans, fluffy clouds that carry it on the drifting wind back to the mountains where it began. All these adventures of what is probably our most precious resource, leave their mark. From the natural; deep canyons cut in the land, erosion of soils, even flooding in places. To the unnatural; our own pollution, storage and direction, even people claiming rights and selling it to make a profit. How is it that something so important to our existence is thought of as a commodity to be bought and sold? ____________________________________ The cascades just above Leavitt Falls are always an amazing display, but in the spring melt, they become a furious gorge. I captured this image at a slightly slow shutter speed to let the fast moving water show a little bit of motion blur. Ideas, visions, artistic delusion, often come without warning. Sleep, meditation, coffee, alcohol, I attempt to force my creativity. Road trips, hiking, exploring, true ways to find inspiration. Timing is such an important part of landscape photography and I would love to say that I am a master at it. Reality though is just not that simple. Time for me feels like a constraint, and with that, I want to break out of it. If you tell me I have to be home from an adventure by a certain time, I am almost guaranteed to be late. Although this proves to be a problem, especially if someone is waiting dinner on your arrival, it also proves to be the key to getting those unique shots. I have often thought that if we as a society used the light to guide us, rather than a clock, we all might live happier lives. Often it seems my timing may not align with peak fall color. There are truly so many elements to line up, including, "being in the right place at the right time." Ha seriously though, I will take moody weather with gorgeous clouds and splotches of sunlight moving across the landscape, over blue sky any day. When I arrived at the viewpoint at #minaretsummit in #mammoth I was a little disappointed to have just missed sunset. I set up to do some long exposure blue hour pics of the minaret peaks. A few moments later, a nice and much more knowledgable photographer came up to me, he let me know there was a rocket launch going to be visible towards the south. I looked over and there was a bright orange fire trail. I spun my tripod and focused in, trying to re orient my camera settings as quickly as possible. Just as I got something I could work with, the rocket caught up with the setting sun. The light display was as dazzling as they come and this is probably my favorite image from such a memorable evening. In photography, as well as just about every other aspect of my life, I tend to over think things. At times this results in fantastic well planned images and other times it has me stuck in the painful moments of indecision. Often I feel afraid to make any choice for fear it be the wrong one. When I am out capturing photos I have to remind myself; to let the fear go, that it is ok to fail, and to let my inner creative come out to play. Lucky for me, nature is the place I feel the most happy, comfortable, and open. ________________________________ The first image is a small part of the larger pano. Waiting for sunset on top of #burstrock in the #emmigrantwilderness and being surrounded by views on all sides, is both a dream and a problem. Where should I aim the camera, here, there, everywhere? As it turns out it really doesn't matter when there is beauty in every direction, you just need to find a subject. I decided to use a longer focal length to focus in on the many volcanic ridges on the horizon line. The smoke from the nearby controlled burn along with the setting sun, really made for a dramatic scene. My long winded point is, just get out there and try. Distance as seen from the top of a mountain seems quite different than from the bottom. Those clouds are probably 10 or more miles away, but moments earlier on the hike up, they looked like they were just over the next ridge. Perspective is something I think a lot about when capturing photos. Its funny though how we seem to forget about it when dealing with other challenges in life. So many times if you seek to understand something from a different view, you gain valuable knowledge and are able to see much clearer.
