Astronaut Text Post Memes – Sally Ride edition

Kinda crazy how after the Challenger disaster they gathered a group made of some of the Best Engineers & Scientists of their generation (possibly ever) just for them to look at it and say "well it Broke because it was Designed Bad. Which you knew, and flew it anyway."

It was treated like it was gonna be this great engineering mystery. Then Sally Ride just shows up with the results from the O-Ring tests that said they couldn't handle the cold.

I want to live in the universe where STS-107 ended with Chris Kraft and Gene Kranz marching into mission control and killing everyone there then sending up Atlantis to get the astronauts

#I can't read about the Columbia accident for too long or else I'll become irrationally angry #The people in Houston literally went against every single word in the Foundations of Mission Control #Then had the nerve to quote Kranz's Tough and Competent speech #The worst part is they didn't even get fired for it #I have heard a few interviews of Kranz and Kraft talking about it and every time you can hear how angry they are #But they try so hard to be nice. They should've named a space shuttle Aquarius. Ideally the one that ended up being Atlantis.

#Like... hear me out #I know they were named after ships. BUT. there has been at least one navy ship named Aquarius (AKA-16)#It was more recent than the other ships the shuttles were named after but STILL #More importantly. The other thing that the shuttles were named after were Apollo vehicles.#(Columbia/Challenger/Endeavour)#Odyssey // Aquarius have always been my favorite set of Apollo names #Plus I feel like the way nasa was adopting a very Navy naming sceme with the shuttles #It would be cool to turn Aquarius into a traditional nasa name where there's always a ship named Aquarius #I feel like 'the ship that saved Apollo 13' is the kind of name they'd do that with #The reason I say Atlantis specifically is:#1. It's just the most comparable name. And the shuttle name I care the least about tbh #Also. During sts–107 the next shuttle to be launched was Atlantis.#All of the concepts for Columbia rescue missions are using Atlantis #Imagine if Aquarius had saved people in a damaged spaceship TWICE #space-posting #shuttle era #they've had a problem
