His head snapped around as you passed and he gaped. It isnât⊠it canât be! But it was. It was you, and oh, how you had matured. You werenât the same immature, class-clown student you were back in high school, that one student whom all the teachers hated.
You turned into a nearby store and disappeared among all the fully stocked maze-forming walls. He raced in after you, skidding to a halt just inside, just before he wouldâve slammed into an old woman.
He held the door open for the lady and replied, âOf course!â with a smile to her feeble but cheery âThank you!â
He turned and flew around the store, scouring the aisles and lanes for that flash of [_______]-colored hair that he recognized so well.
He located you in the produce section, examining the tomatoes. He stood, staring at your form as you picked one up. He took deep, slow breaths, trying to convince himself it was okay, that you werenât the same person you were all those years ago.
Once heâd built up enough confidence, he strode over and tapped you on the shoulder gently, as if he was going to break you. You turned around, eyes wide.
âOh! Hi!â You said, backing up against the racks of food and scanning him up and down.
âHey,â he replied gruffly. âHavenât seen you in a while.â He opened his arms wide and stepped forward, wrapping you in a hug. Your eyes went wide and you stiffened.
He backed up, looking down. âSorry, that-that was weird.â
âWell, I haven't seen you since high school⊠would you⊠maybe⊠want to catch up?â He asked, fiddling with his hands, eyes darting everywhere. You snorted.
âI thought you hated me.â
âWha- no! I never hated you, I just thought you were⊠difficult.â He stammered.
âYouâre not helping your case,â You chuckled.
He rolled his eyes. âDo you want to have dinner or not?â
You froze. âUhm. Who-who said anything about dinner?â
âWell- I mean, I- I wanted to take you out and figured asking to catch up would be less awkward, but I guess not.â
He went to leave and you lightly tapped him on the shoulder. He turned back around and raised an eyebrow. âIâll go out with you. But youâre paying. And maybe just a coffee or something.â
He smirked. âAlright, I can make that work. What do you think about that new coffee place that opened up down the street? I remember you used to like frappuccinos..â
You grinned. âThat sounds great. Iâm surprised you remember that, honestly.â
He smiled. âGreat. Saturday, two PM?â He asked.
âHang on, let me checkâŠâ You pulled out your phone and clicked on that day and time, making sure you were free. âOkay, yeah, looks like Iâm free then. Sounds good.â He pulled out his own phone and handed it to you, letting you add your number.
âItâs a date.â He replied, walking past you to the back of the store. You continued your shopping spree, finishing up a few hours later. You arrived back home pretty late. Like six pm late. Most of that was to blame on traffic and the fact that you drove across town, but whatever.
You unpacked your things, loading the pantry and fridge down with everything you could ever need. âI have a problem.â You muttered, pushing the fridge door closed. You grabbed the cereal and milk youâd left out for dinner and mixed them in a bowl. You fought to close the fridge again, and placed the cereal in the pantry.
You carried your cereal over to the couch, where you sat in peace, the only noise being the air conditioner, the clink of your spoon against the bowl, and your obnoxiously loud chewing. You swallowed, sighed, and reached for the remote. You turned on the tv and scrolled through the channels, finally settling on an old action movie from when you were a kid.
You watched the tv with severe concentration, finishing off your dinner. You got up, eyes still locked on the tv, and placed your dishes in the sink. You paused for a moment, questioning whether to do them now or wait until later. You decided on later and returned to the couch.
Around eight, you decided to take a shower and head to bed, seeing as you had work the next day. You undressed and turned on the water, sticking out your foot to test the temperature. You cringed as the freezing cold liquid attacked your toe.
A few minutes later, the water was warmed up enough to where you could get in comfortably. You stepped in, relaxing as the warm water splashed against your soft skin. You sighed contentedly. As always, your shower thoughts began to attack your mind. You leaned against the wall, scrubbing shampoo into your hair.
What was he thinking, asking me out like that? Isnât he like forty? Is that illegal? You made a mental note to look up the dating ages when you got out. Even if itâs legal, do I even want him? He was my teacher. Wonât that be weird? God, what was he thinking? You sighed. âWhatever,â you muttered.
You relaxed into the warm water as it rinsed over your head, trailing soapy water down your back. You rubbed your fingertips into your scalp gingerly, making sure you got all the soap out. You seized the conditioner and squeezed it out onto your palm. You squished the water out of your hair and smeared the cream into your hair, saturating it entirely.
You tied back your slimy hair and rinsed off your hands. You grabbed your face scrub and rubbed it on your face, humming to yourself. You got lost in your thoughts and the soft sensation of your thumbs pressing circles into your features.
You rinsed off your face and tugged the hair band out of your hair, wrinkling your nose at the feeling of it falling onto your shoulders. You grabbed the comb from the shelf beside you and ran it through your ends, gradually going higher and higher until you were running long, extended strokes down from your scalp to your ends.
You turned around and let the water finish attacking your silky tresses, using your fingertips to ruffle your roots. Ensuring the conditioner was fully washed out. You turned off the water, squeezed the excess water out of your hair and stepped out. You grabbed your towel off the hanger and wrapped it around your body, walking to the mirror.
You reached up and cleared a spot to do your skincare routine. You were halfway through when your phone rang. Unknown Number flashed across your screen. You squeezed out a dollop of moisturizer onto your index finger and swiped to answer the call, putting it on speakerphone.
âHello?â You asked, evenly dabbing the cream onto your face.
âHey.â A familiar voice responded. You froze.
âPlease, call me Shota.â He replied huskily.
âUm, okay.â Your hands shook as you placed them on the edge of the countertop to steady yourself. âHow- how can I help you?â You asked, your question filled with voice cracks.
He chuckled, his voice getting deeper by the second. You straightened back up and resumed your routine as he continued. âSo, about that date on Saturday? Yeah. Something came up.â
You sighed. Itâs not like this is something new. You were stood up or cancelled on almost every time. âSo what if we meet up now?â He continued, surprising you.
âUm, yeah, right- right now?â You asked, confirming the time.
âYeah, if thatâll work for you.â He replied.
âI just got out of the shower, so as long as you donât mind no makeup and wet hair, it sounds fine to me.â You said.
âI donât mind at all. Do you want me to bring snacks or anything?â He asked.
âSo I have a slight shopping problem,â You mentioned, tying your hair back into a low pony. âSo pretty much anything you want, I have. If you want to bring something, go right ahead.â
Silence. âIâll be there in a few. Whatâs the address?â
You responded with your address and you both said goodbye. You went to the bedroom and pulled on a loose-fitting hoodie and some comfy sweatpants. If he said he was okay with it, he better not have been lying.
You exited the room, stopped, turned around and retrieved socks. Fuzzy socks. You put them on as well and sighed in contentment. You made your way to the kitchen and pulled out some microwave popcorn bags, throwing one in the microwave.
Walking over to the TV, you grabbed the remote again and began scrolling through Netflix, trying to find something you thought he might like. You realized you had absolutely no idea what he liked, and settled on a house-hunting show, just for background noise.
You settled down on the couch and got lost in the show. About ten minutes had passed before the doorbell finally rang. You unfolded your legs and stuffed your hands inside your hoodie pocket and went to answer the door, limping slightly because your foot fell asleep. You open the door to a very happy Shota, arms laden with goodies.
âHi!â He says, walking past you. He empties his arms onto your plain coffee table and turns to see you again. He opens his arms, still smiling and wraps you in a hug. You return it, your face turning sideways against his collarbone.
You place your hands on your hips and scan your eyes over the coffee table. âI thought I said you didnât have to bring anything?â You asked.
He shrugged. âDidnât have to. I wanted to.â
You sighed. âWhatever. What do you want to watch? Any good movies in mind?â You asked, plopping down on the couch with your feet tucked in under your ass. He claimed his spot right next to you, leaned on the corner between the back of the couch and the armrest, and pulled you onto his chest.
He hummed into your ear. âI havenât heard of any, Iâm willing to try anything though!â He added, smiling into your neck.
You giggled and turned on the TV, pulling up the first house-hunting channel you could find. âThis good?â You asked, tilting your head back to look at him.
âYeah, Iâve actually been meaning to watch this,â he jokes.
You narrow your eyes at him. âI can change itâŠâ You mutter, your hand lingering by the remote. He leaned forward and grabbed your hand, pulling it back to rest on your lower chest.
âNo. This is fine,â he insisted, gently kissing your neck. You giggled and leaned farther into him.
A few hours later, youâd watched all the good movies you could find, eaten most if not all of the food heâd brought and the two of you were slowly drifting off to sleep together on the couch, the TV still flashing lights at you.
Shota pulled you farther up his chest as he scooted down to lay fully on the couch and turned on his side so he was spooning you. âGoodnight, Y/N,â he mumbled sleepily into your ear.
âGânight, Shota,â You mumbled back before closing your eyes and drifting to sleep. His arms tightened around you as he did the same.
