we can't make any promises now (but you can make me a drink)
Alec slid a drink across the bar and glanced at the clock on the far wall. It was nearing 2 AM, and all he wanted was to clock out and sleep for the next several days. It was rare he had more than a night off at once, but Luke had insisted he take the holidays off.
He suspected his mother might have had something to do with that, but Alec wasnât complaining. His mom dating his boss was weird, but they were good together. Maryse seemed happier than she ever had with his father.
And it came with the added bonus of better job security.
Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted someone at the end of the bar waving him over. âHey, what can I get for you?â Alec asked as he approached the man.
âAnother dry martini,â the man said, his voice rough and a little wobbly. Alec frowned, noticing the red around his eyes and the way he was hunched in on himself. âPlease.â

A Dazzling Haze
âHey, donât hog the wine.â
Magnus rolls his eyes and twists where heâs already lying sprawled out on his couch, so that he can push the bottle of r osĂŠ towards Izzy.
Magnus watches her pour out a generous amount and down it in a few long sips before she joins him on the couch, an arm over her eyes.
âRemind me never to make my final short answer again.â
Itâs the end of the fall semester and Magnus and Izzy have convened in Magnusâ loft to celebrate getting their grades into the system on time. In Magnusâ case, two minutes before they were due.
âOnly if you remind me not to assign lab reports in the last week,â he replies. He can still see the titration graphs when he closes his eyes.
He and Izzy have been working together as college professors for almost two years now and while sheâs a good amount younger than him, theyâve become good friends.
Itâs almost a tradition at this point to buy copious amounts of wine and complain about their classes once the semester is over.
âWe torture these poor students donât we,â Izzy mutters, taking a large gulp of wine and closing her eyes.
âAll in the name of learning, my dear.â
Magnus leans forwards to refill his now empty glass, humming in content.
âHey Magnus,â Izzy says after a moment, and Magnus looks over to the other side of the couch where Izzy is now sat up straight, âI think thereâs something wrong with your cat.â
Magnus follows her line of sight to the corner of the room where Chairman has been most of the night . Magnus had rescued Chairman from a back alley almost a month ago now. He has been stalking around that corner for a week now and Magnus canât for the life of him figure out why.
Magnus exchanges a look with Izzy when Chairman plops onto the floor and starts making loud meowing noises. Heâs never made this much noise before.
âIs he okay?â Izzy asks, eyebrows climbing up into her hairline when Chairman makes another loud sound.
âIâI donât know?â
He gets up and walks over to Chairman who has made himself comfortable in the corner and is still meowing loudly.
He looks like heâs breathing hard and faster than normal. Magnus worries his lip between his teeth and reaches out to the cat.
Izzy is behind him and she has her phone in her hand.
âMy brother is a vet,â she says, âmaybe I should call him.â
Magnus studies Chairman. His breathing is worrisome even if he pushes into Magnusâ hand affectionately and meows loudly.
âYeah,â he murmurs, âthatâs probably a good idea. Better safe than sorry.â
Magnus scratches under Chairman's chin and murmurs softly to him while Izzy talks to her brother on the phone. She takes a photo of Chairman to send to him and when he sees Izzyâs eyes widen he feels his heart sink.
Izzy disconnects the call and Magnus is on his feet in a second.
âWhat did he say?â
Izzy presses her lips together and looks at Chairman before looking back at Magnus.
âWell. Alec thinks Chairman is in labor.â
Magnusâ eyes widen and he grabs Izzyâs arm.
âWhat? He canât be in labor. Heâs not pregnant. What? â
Magnus shakes his head and paces away from Izzy. This canât be right. Heâs not qualified to take care of newborn kittens.
âI hate to break it to you Magnus, but I donât think Chairman is a he .â
Magnus looks back at Chairman who is now lying stretched out in the corner, still breathing fast.
âWell shit , â He mutters under his breath.
âHow the fuck did you not know your cat was pregnant ?â Izzy asks.
âI donât know!â Magnus throws up his arms and spins to face her, âI just thought she was a bit overweight. Iâm sorry for trying to enforce body positivity.â
Izzy laughs and Magnus sends her a glare.
âThis is not a laughing matter Isabelle,â he warns, âI am not qualified to deliver kittens.â
Izzy laughs again and throws a hand over his shoulder.
âDonât worry. I texted Alec your address. Heâs on his way.â
Magnus lets out a relieved breath and drops back onto the couch.
âThank god.â
***
Magnus is sitting in the corner with Chairman when the doorbell rings.
He and Izzy had set up a cardboard box lined with towels for Chairman in the corner  and sheâd taken up residence in it.
Now that Magnus is looking for it, he can see that she is definitely pregnant. Heâs not sure how he didnât think there was something up earlier.
Izzy gets up to let her brother in while Magnus stays with Chairman, petting her head softly every little while.
He looks up when Izzy and Alec walk into the living room and freezes for a second when his eyes land on Alec.
Heâs tall is the first thing that pops into his head. Followed quickly by beautiful .
Magnus lets his lips turn up into a smile and he gets to his feet.
Alec drops a bag of supplies down near the couch and Magnus holds a hand out for him to shake.
âMagnus Bane,â he says smoothly, âI didnât realize such striking beauty ran in the family.â
He flicks his gaze up at Alecâs face, smirking when he finds a faint flush dusting his cheeks, and then looks at Isabelle who stands in the corner looking absolutely delighted.
Alec pulls his hand back and moves it behind his back.
âAlec Lightwood,â he says with a small smile, âhowâs your cat doing?â
Magnus deliberately spins and on his heel towards where Chairman is lying in the box theyâd set out and shimmies his shoulders once before throwing a glance over his shoulder at Alec.
âShe seems okay,â he pauses, waiting for Alec to look at Chairman and then back to him, âbut youâre the expert here.â
Alec lets out a breath that sounds a little bit like a laugh and Magnus bites his lip to hold back a smile.
âUsually they donât need much help other than some encouragement,â Alec says, crouching down and murmuring something low and sweet to Chairman.
Izzy comes over to stand by Magnus, while Alec checks out Chairmanâs condition and Magnus bumps his shoulder with hers accusingly.
âYou didnât tell me your brother was hot ,â he whispers.
Izzy snickers under her breath and Magnus glares before elbowing her in the side.
âOw,â she mutters, still laughing.
Alec looks over his shoulder at the commotion and Magnus sends him an innocent wave.
He grins when Alec blushes and returns the wave with a smile.
***
The first kitten arrived about an hour later.
Magnus holds his breath until the tiny thing makes a high pitched meowing sound and then canât help but smile.
Alec looks over at him with bright eyes.
The kitten is so tiny. Itâs fur is mussed and wet but Magnus can feel himself falling in love with it. Thereâs no way heâs going to be able to give any of them up.
Alec is biting his lip and watching him out of the corner of his eye as if he knows exactly what Magnus is thinking.
Heâs probably done this so many times that he does.
Ten minutes later a second kitten arrives and Chairman gets to work bathing it while the first kitten nestle s into her stomach.
âTheyâre so small,â Magnus murmurs and Alec smiles.
âDonât get too used to it,â he says, âthey grow fast.â
Magnus canât imagine these babies who arenât even as big as his palm growing ever.
After the third kitten arrives, Chairman meows loudly and Magnus canât help but chuckle.
He brings a hand up to pet her head at the same time Alec does and their fingers knock together for a second.
Itâs clique. So completely clique that Magnus should be annoyed, but warmth from the touch climbs up his arm and he and Alecâs eyes catch on each other for a long second.
Alec blinks a couple times, smiling a sort of half smile, and then looks away back down at Chairman.
âSheâs doing good,â he says quietly and Magnus wonders if heâs imagined the way Alecâs voice is a just a bit rougher than it was before.
Izzy huffs from behind them and Magnus turns around to find her sprawled on the couch, wine in hand. She looks extremely delighted and raises her eyebrows at Alec in some sort of unspoken communication.
âUm, I think Chairman is going to be fine, do you want to maybe move from the floor?â Alec asks.
Magnus realizes then , that the two of them have been crouched in front of the box where Chairman has been giving birth for over an hour now.
He stands up and offers a hand to Alec who takes it with a smile.
âWould you like a drink?â he asks, turning on his heel to walk over to the coffee table where heâd left the wine.
He hands a glass to Alec and watches through his eyelashes as he takes a sip.
He sees Magnus watching him and seems to smile into the glass, Magnusâ lips quirk up into a smile of their own in response.
Theyâve known each other for barely two hours but thereâs something there that Magnus wants to explore.
They donât say anything for a long moment, just looking at each other. Magnus admires the way the light from the lamp casts shadows over Alecâs face and the way heâs not exactly smiling but the corner s of his lips are quirked up just the tiniest bit.
Magnus feels Izzy kick his leg and turns to find her sprawled out even further on his couch. She swirls her glass and grins at him cheekily.
âAre you two done?â She asks, âBecause I was promised a wine night.â
Alec laughs and rolls his eyes before moving to take up residence in one of Magnusâ armchairs.
Since Izzy has decided to take up the entire couch, Magnus settles into the second armchair and burrows himself into the cushion.
The three of them end up talking until late into the night. Alec fits well into the easy bantering he and Izzy have long since established and listening to Izzy and Alec team up to  regale him with  ever increasingly dramatic stories of their youth is nothing if not thoroughly amusing.
Magnus finds himself liking Alec. Not just as a pretty face, but because heâs smart and bluntly honest and he smiles at Izzy like sheâs his entire world. He doesnât notice the time until Alec sets his glass down on the coffee table and smiles sheepishly at him.
âItâs getting late,â he says and Izzy nods from the couch, yet makes no move to actually get up. Â Sheâs a bit drunker than the two of them.
Magnus laughs as Alec rolls his eyes and leans down to try and pull Izzy off the couch.
âYou can stay in my spare room if youâd like,â Magnus suggests , secretly not wanting them to go just yet.
âThatâs nice of you, but itâs okay,â Alec says, having gotten Izzy up and leaning into his side.
Heâs a little tipsy from the wine and they stumble slightly where theyâre standing. Itâs quite adorable.
âIâll call you a cab then,â Magnus says brushing past them to retrieve his phone, âdonât fall over in the meantime.â
He lets Alecâs amused laughter follow him into the kitchen where he finds his phone.
***
A few weeks later, Magnusâ loft has been taken over by tiny kittens that dart around the space and follow Magnus around like adorable little shadows .
He carefully side steps one of them waiting for him outside the kitchen and drops onto the couch.
Three more kittens appear from who knows where, settling in his lap and under his arm. Magnus rolls his eyes but pets their little heads nonetheless.
âSend me the article and Iâll take a look at it,â he says into the phone.
He and Izzy had teamed up on a research project and had started up background research as soon as the semester had ended. Heâs excited to work with her for the first time and can already tell theyâre going to be a great team.
Theyâve been on the phone for hours now and Magnus can tell this is going to end up going well.
Izzy hums in conformation and Magnus listens as she goes to send him the article.
When sheâs done her voice is more teasing. Magnus can tell that theyâre done talking about work.
âSo,â she asks, âhow are the kittens?â
Magnus looks down at the pile of fur crowded around him. Â
âTheyâre good,â he says with a smile.
âAlec keeps asking about them,â Izzy says more suggestively this time, âthough I think itâs a cover up for asking about you.â
Magnus will deny it but his heart rate speeds in his chest when he hears Alecâs name.
âI donât know - â he starts and gets cut off by Izzy.
âHe said you were hot.â
At that , Magnus sits up straighter on the couch.
âHe has my number right?â he asks.
He distinctly remembers telling Izzy to give it to Alec after theyâd left that night , but he hadnât heard anything for two weeks so he assumed Alec wasnât interested.
âYou have his too,â Izzy answers and Magnus rolls his eyes.
âI hate you,â he mutters and Izzy laughs into his ear.
âLove you too.â
It takes him a few minutes and a pep talk but Magnus eventually ends up calling Alec.
Alecâs voice is low and smooth when he answers the phone.
âMagnus?â
Magnus smiles and drops his head onto one of the kittens who is lounging on the armrest.
âAlexander,â he says, âhow are you?â
âUmâIâm good.â
He sounds confused and Magnus realizes he needs to come up with some reason that heâs called after not seeing or speaking to Alec for two weeks otherwise heâs going to sound really weird.
âI was wondering,â he says slowly, âif you wanted to come over to see the kittens. Theyâve grown a lot since the last time you saw them.â
Itâs a friendly enough question but Magnus hopes Alec understands the implication.
âYeah,â Alec replies, voice soft, âIâd like that.â
***
That evening when Magnus opens the door for Alec all six of the kittens crowd against the door to greet their new visitor.
Alec laughs when he sees them and they all meow in high pitched greeting. Â He crouches down and lets them crawl all over him. Itâs unfairly adorable.
âThey like you,â Magnus says.
When Alec looks up, their eyes lock and Alec smiles warmly.
âI do too,â Magnus blurts.
Alecâs eyes widen and then he laughs.
âReally?â
âYeah. I like you,â he repeats, basking in the way Alecâs eyes light up.
âI like you too ,â Alec says, carefully picking up a kitten from his shoulder and depositing him back on the ground before standing up to face Magnus properly.
Magnus grins and steps forwards into his space.
âMaybe we should do something about that.â
Alecâs eyes dart down to his lips and then back up to his eyes and Magnus takes that as his cue to lean in.
Alecâs lips are soft and Magnus smiles into the kiss as he feels arms wind around his waist and pull him closer.
When they pull apart heâs still smiling.
âSo,â Alec says, âWhat do you say to a date?
Alec did indeed look like crap, and he knew that; 11am was too early to start a Saturday shift in general, let alone when heâd been up until 4am writing feverishly. He still gave Duncan an incredibly unimpressed glare, though.
âIâm sorry that I didnât do my make-up on lunch break, but I was too busy trying not to throw myself out of the window,â he said, voice as flat as his patience was thin. He ignored Lindsay in the corner, proclaiming that a âmoodâ.
âWell if you need make-up tips, you can always ask Magnus,â he snickered.
âStop being a dick to him,â Lindsay said from the depths of her locker.
âWho the fuck is Magnus?â Alec asked.
âOne of the new temps lol,â Duncan answered, literally saying âlolâ with his mouth and
annoying Alec even more â which he didnât think possible. âLinds thinks heâs handsome.â
âHe IS handsome.â
Duncan snorted. âAnd obviously gay. He wears makeup. Everyone knows him already Alec, I canât believe you donât.â
Alec had already shut his locker â a little too forcefully after Duncanâs comment â and had started making his way out of the room, but turned to address him anyway.
âLike Lindsay said, quit being a dick.â She nodded sagely in the background, validated. âHe probably looks better in makeup than you do without. Besides, I never usually learn peopleâs names unless theyâre obviously going to stay and be important to me. But maybe Iâll make an effort for this Magnus â what do you think, Dennis?â He smirked and shrugged lightly before leaving the room and getting back to work. He distinctly heard Lindsayâs laughter behind him.
It was a Saturday though, and he was entirely too busy to give this mysterious Magnus much thought in amongst mentally ranting at every asshole who thought it was okay to leave half empty coffee cups all over his shop. He ran the whole mens floor more often than not, which was fine, he could handle that. What wasnât fine was the absolute clowns he had been saddled with that day. Surely, it wasnât that hard to read a label and work out where, roughly, an item belonged? It was fortunate that all the tills were staffed so he wasnât needed there. He fucking hated the tills.
Obviously, the two new kids with him that day just had to leave dead on time, leaving him to effectively close up the entire floor on his own. By the time 10pm rolled around, he was cursing under his breath. Was it so hard for people to put things back where theyâd gotten them from?
âAs wonderfully colourful as youâre painting the air, can I offer any assistance?â came a voice from behind him, making Alec realise that his muttering hadnât been quite as under his breath as heâd thought. He turned, either to justify himself or apologise â he hadnât quite decided â but the words caught in his throat once heâd saw the owner of the voice. It was quite a voice, and this man was quite the owner. He made the simple all black uniform requirement look haute couture, with a brocade waistcoat over the plain button up shirt, and rings that looked far nicer than anything on display in the jewellery counter on the floor below.
âI donât think weâve been formally introduced,â said the beautiful man, offering a hand out to Alec. âIâm Magnus.â
âAlec,â he offered as freely as his smile. He fumbled with the multipack of socks he was still holding before taking Magnusâs hand, holding it perhaps a little longer than strictly necessary. It didnât seem like Magnus minded.
âWe should- are you sure? Itâs late,â Alec stumbled out eventually.
âIâm positive. If itâs late for me, then itâs late for you too, Alec.â
âThank you,â he conceded. âItâs just the rest of this-â he gestured vaguely to the area around him â âto do.â
There was truthfully only about another half hours work in it for him, but with Magnus assisting him in comfortable silence, they were done in under fifteen. Alec took a moment to slyly check whether heâd have to stay a little longer just to make sure the sections he hadnât done himself were acceptable â Magnus was new, and Alec had high standards â but it was with relief that Alec noted Magnus clearly knew what he was doing.
âDo you have to get someone to check before we leave?â Magnus asked.
âNormally, yeah, but they trust me to get it right. Thank you, Magnus, I really appreciate it,â Alec said, with a sincerity his colleagues rarely got to hear.
âWell, you definitely donât look a damsel, but I canât resist aiding someone in distress,â Magnus said succinctly, with a twinkle in his eye that intrigued Alec. He didnât make friends that easily, but there was something about Magnus that he really couldnât quantify. He felt like they could be very good friends, and he found that, unlike himself, he wasnât averse to trying.
âIâm this way,â Alec indicated, once theyâd signed out and left the store. The early November air was biting at this time of night, his ears an unfortunate victim.
âAh, Iâm the opposite. Will I see you tomorrow?â
âNo, I got lucky and get Sundays off. Monday?â
Magnus grimaced. âIâm a student, I can only work weekends unfortunately. I guess Iâll see you next week then, Alexander.â
The use of his full name startled him, though not as much as the realisation that he didnât mind it when it came from Magnus. âYeah, Um, how did you-â
âLucky guess,â Magnus smiled. âDo you mind it?â
âI think Iâll let you call me that,â Alec smiled back. âGood night, Magnus.â
âGood night, Alexander.â
And so it was that they spent every Saturday lunch break together. Alec was always scheduled for the long shift, and while Magnusâs shifts only ever started as soon as Alecâs breaks would finish, he was always around an hour early. Alec asked him about it, and Magnus shrugged.
âMy lunch options are more varied around here,â he said.
Alec asked Magnus a lot of things, and answered just as many. He took Magnus to Takiâs, a little nearby diner that did amazing spanakopita and other Greek pastries. Thalia, the old lady running the place, had long taken a shine to Alec and insisted on giving him free treats â he accepted, purely on the basis that heâd sneak a good tip in when she wasnât looking. She knew, and he knew she knew, but they didnât speak about it. What was important was that she took a great liking to Magnus too, especially when he spoke to her in broken Greek.
âYou speak Greek?â he asked, on their first visit there.
âOnly a little,â Magnus conceded. âI speak a few other languages somewhat fluently, and figured since Iâm good at them, I may as well learn them.â
It turned out that Magnus knew Spanish, French, and Italian (âonce youâve got one romance language down youâve basically got the othersâ), a little Greek, a little Dutch, and was fluent in Indonesian. Alec found out that Magnus was actually from Indonesia, though moved as a young teen to America to live with his father. He eventually moved to New York when he refused to join the âfamily businessâ â whatever that was, Magnus never specified â and was a grad student studying particle physics now.
Alec, in turn, told Magnus about his family, about sharing an apartment with his siblings and he and Jace working so Izzy could focus on med school. He told Magnus about his mother and Max, trying to help how they could even though they were left with very little after Robert left them. He even told Magnus about Robert, about him being that cold kind of homophobic that tolerated him, but did not accept him.
They spent one memorable Saturday at the very start of December discussing books. Alec didnât usually allow himself to get carried away in conversation, sweeping hand gestures punctuating his words, but he was talking about something he loved and â well. He trusted Magnus enough to be himself with him, to live a little more freely â similar, but even more so, to how he was with Izzy and Jace.
âI just- stories are such an inherently human art, you know? The best stories echo through time in their original forms simply because humans donât change all that much, despite era or culture. Thatâs the goal,â he rambled. Magnus frowned a little, head tilting, and Alec thought that it might have been the cutest thing heâd ever seen a person do â and Max was a cute child.
âDo you write, Alexander?â he asked. Alec froze.
âI-â he licked his lips, and leaned in. Magnus did the same, and Alec lowered his voice. âDonât tell anyone, but⌠yeah. I do. Not even Jace and Izzy know. I donât know why I donât tell them, itâs not like Iâll ever get published, butâŚâ
âItâs nice to have something for yourself,â Magnus finished.
âYeah,â Alec smiled. âYou read my mind. Maybe one day, Iâll put it out there, but for now,â he simply shrugged.
âIf you ever decide to put your writing out there, Iâll be first in line. Knowing you, I have no doubt itâll be incredible.â
The sheer belief that Magnus had in him, the trust after only four weeks, broke something down in Alec that he had no idea heâd even built. Suddenly, he wanted Magnus to know him like no one else â or maybe, it wasnât sudden at all.
He leant down, rummaging around in the small bag he brought with him and pulling out his tattered cheap notebook, flicking it to the most recent page. He carried it with him to work, favoured green pen tucked into the spiral binding, in case inspiration struck him while commuting or on break (he would always leave the store on lunch, even Before Magnus â and wasnât it something, that Alec was separating his life into Before Magnus and After Magnus?). Alec mostly wrote fiction, short stories, poured out his frustrations and lived his wildest dreams in them, and yet, on that morningâs train, heâd found himself hit with a three-quarter formed idea and rushed to scribble it down.
It was a sonnet, structured like Shakespeareâs ones, and its underlying tone was⌠hopeful. New beginnings, new bonds, change that was welcome. He consciously made another change now, in sliding the notebook over to Magnus.
âThis came to me on the train this morning, so uh â I donât know if itâs any good. But I trust you to be honest with me if it sucks,â he laughed nervously, hands starting to rub themselves nervously without a conscious thought.
Magnus was silent as he read, and though he read quickly, it seemed to Alec like a whole hour passed, rather than a minute. He watched Magnus read, watched his eyes widen, until Magnus looked up at him with a look on his face of⌠awe?
âAlexander,â he said, voice hushed. âThis is incredible.â
âYou⌠think so?â he replied, blush beginning to rise. Magnus nodded.
âYou have a real skill for words, darling. None of the languages I speak could be as beautiful as your own.â
Alec smiled, a soft shy thing, as he gently took the notebook back from Magnus and closed it. He felt impossibly light, a burden he hadnât realised was weighing on him as much as it had relieved.
âWe have to go back now, but â itâd be nice to talk about writing with someone. Can I text it to you, sometime?â
âAbsolutely,â grinned Magnus, exchanging numbers with Alec as they walked back to work.
Alec realised, two Sundays after heâd first gotten Magnusâs number, that he had no idea if Magnus was coming to that nightâs work Christmas party. He certainly had never made his intentions of going clear, and now Magnus was already at work, so he couldnât just ask.
Parties werenât often Alecâs thing, but he did enjoy them now and then, and it wasnât as if he hated his colleagues or anything. He just felt⌠out of place. To be perfectly honest, he felt that way most of the time, except around his family, while writing, or with Magnus.
Perhaps it should scare him, that Magnus felt a little like belonging. It didnât.
He dressed reasonably appropriately for the night, tan wool overcoat and beanie part of his outfit, not just accessories, and charcoal shirt with the top few buttons undone despite the cold. Heâd been something of a boring dresser once, before heâd come out, all large sweaters and baggy jeans â but now, while fashion still didnât speak to him as such, he knew what he liked and how to dress and wore sharp, clean, well-fitting clothes. It wasnât even a conscious decision, really, but the internet always said you dressed better after coming out and he supposed that had happened to him as well.
He wasnât out out, but he wasnât hiding anything either. It was no oneâs prerogative to know everything about him unless he wanted them to.
Ten to eight, Alec found himself sat with a bunch of his colleagues waiting for those who had just finished work to join them. Magnus wasnât already there, and he hoped that he would be showing up with the others, else Alec would probably just head home after the meal and text Magnus all night instead.
That was what they usually did, anyway.
He neednât have considered alternate plans, though â as Magnus strolled in with the latecomers looking like an untouchable god.
Heâd shaved, for a start, and put dark pink highlights in his hair â heâd not had them yesterday at lunch â and he wore a stunning crushed red velvet blazer. Red was certainly Magnusâs colour, Alec thought. He didnât think about the fact that he noticed how tight Magnusâs pants were, or the fact that Alec couldnât take his eyes off his friend.
Magnus seemed to be looking for something, and Alec began to stand to greet him, which led Magnus to look his way. He smiled at the sight of Alec, and Alec smiled back, heart leaping, as Magnus made his way over.
âGot you a drink,â Alec said, indicating the two on the table in front of him.
âAfter that day, I certainly need one. Thank you, Alexander,â said Magnus, resting his hand on Alecâs shoulder as he leant to pick up the drink. âDark and Stormy?â Alec shrugged.
âIt sounded nice, so I thought Iâd try it.â
âGood choice, darling. Shall we go be seated?â
They managed to sit next to each other throughout the whole meal, and while Magnus entertained those in the vicinity â like a king holding court, Alec thought, all his subjects enthralled and enamoured â most of their attention was on them alone.
The food was decent, surprisingly good for the place they were in, and the free drinks meant the empty glasses began accumulating steadily. The air buzzed with merriment, and even Alec was laughing freely.
âHey, everyoneâs heading down to Pandemonium now,â Magnus whispered into Alecâs ear.
âMmm? Are you going with?â
âActually, I was wondering if you wanted to stop by a store, get some cheap wine, and come back to mine.â
Alec grinned. He wanted nothing more.
Magnusâs place was huge. A penthouse full of oddities and books and incredible art, for a grad student? Even Tipsy Alec was confused by it all, and Tipsy Alec was so much more of a dumbass than Sober Alec. As Magnus closed the door behind them, coming forward to take the bag from Alecâs hands, he noticed the expression on Alecâs face and seemed to read his mind.
âThis place is the one gift I accepted from my father. I had⌠a sizeable trust fund, all legally in my name, nothing he could do about it, and I used it to buy this place after Iâd left. I didnât want to touch his money, but he never wanted me to come here, so - it seemed like a perfectly good âfuck youâ.â
âItâs a pretty good fuck you, as fuck yous go. You know, Iâm surprised you donât like parties,â Alec said.
Magnus waved his hand nonchalantly. âOh, I love parties. Iâd just much rather hang out with you.â
And fuck, if that werenât something right there.
Magnus and Alec found themselves sharing just one bottle of wine, far too busy talking to drink, simply enjoying each otherâs company when not talking, enough that alcohol simply wasnât necessary. As a fire crackled in the grate in front of the seating area, Magnus showed Alec his books, told wild travel stories for each trinket, regaled Alec with stories that while they could be those he told when winning friends and captivating hearts, Alec just knew that these were for him and him alone. Magnus had just told a story from his youth where he pretended to be his own father to get out of detention, and that it had somehow worked despite it being a face-to-face conversation, and Alec couldnât stop giggling, which seemed to set Magnus off laughing too.
âGods, I was such a little brat when I was with him. Still would be, probably, had I not met Cat and Ragnor and left.â
âWas it hard to leave? With your dad doing⌠whatever it is he does.â
Magnusâs eyes narrowed quizzically, but warmly. âMy father owns a pharmaceutical company that jacks up the prices of literally everything. What did you think he might do, Alexander?â
âHonestly, thought he might be a mob boss, but thatâd probably be better,â Alec said. âI see why you want to distance yourself from him.â
âMmm. Youâre one of three people who know about him, here.â
âIâm- Cat, Ragnor, and⌠me?â Magnus nodded at Alecâs incredulous tone.
âI trust you,â he said, warm brown eyes unwavering from Alecâs own.
âThank you. For what itâs worth, and this may be selfish, but Iâm kinda glad it led you here.â
âYeah?â asked Magnus, twisting his body round so that he was sat cross legged on the couch, back resting against the arm and facing Alec, who was sprawled out so that his torso lay on the couch, head on the arm rest, and longs legs bent resting on the floor. âBe selfish for a second for me. Why?â
âIf you hadnât realised what a jerk he was, you wouldnât be in New York. And if you hadnât cut yourself off⌠you wouldnât have needed a job to support you. And I wouldnât have met you. Iâm sorry, if thatâs rude, but⌠Iâm really glad I met you,â Alec steamrollered, knowing that if he didnât get it out now he might never do it again out of stubbornness.
âIâm really glad I met you too, Alexander. Makes being yelled at for not returning things from last year worth it.â Magnus laughed softly then, and so did Alec, a shared experience joining them. Magnus heaved a sigh then, and Alec furrowed his brow.
âAlexander⌠how drunk would you say you are? Iâm completely sober, unfortunately.â
Alec took a second to ponder it, but he neednât have â theyâd been sat there for a few hours, and were only halfway through their shared bottle of wine. The only thing he was intoxicated by was Magnusâs presence, the warmth radiating from him that had little to do with actual temperature and everything to do with the comfort and serenity that Magnus brought him.
âIf it makes you feel better about it, Iâm completely sober too,â Alec said. âBut thatâs okay. Being here at 2am is way more fun than any club could be.â
âGood, Iâm glad you â thatâs good. Alexander, tell me if this is too forward, butâŚâ Magnus trailed off, eyes closed and breathing deeply, as if to steady himself.
âBut what?â
Magnus shook his head, and swallowed, before he leant down and forward and pressed his lips to Alecâs.
It was relatively chaste, all things considered, but Alec felt his world turn on its head. Magnus tasted of wine, and chocolate, and home, and Alec closed his eyes and let himself feel. His lips were soft, and as Alec chased them, it hit him that he was halfway to falling in love with the man, and he hadnât even noticed that that was what it was.
They separated, yet Magnus didnât go far; Alec opened his eyes to see Magnus still hovering a few inches over him, his own eyes gazing into Alecâs own. Alecâs lips quirked into a smile.
âThat was-â
âYeah,â Magnus breathed out, and returned Alecâs soft, shy smile with one of his own, to which Alec, surprising himself with his boldness, rose up and kissed again.
The difference this time, as they sat up together, was that they could barely stop smiling to really kiss, but neither cared. Their laughter mingled between them in the firelit room, Alecâs admission that heâd never been kissed before at 24 simply encouraging Magnus to kiss him more, barely noticing when the embers started to settle, tangled up in each other on the couch with this new thing between them, that had somehow always been present.
âStay the night, Alexander? Itâs late, we donât have to do anything, just⌠stay?â
âMagnus, thereâs- thereâs nowhere else Iâd rather be.â
No one commented on the spring in Alecâs step the next morning, and he was grateful; he didnât exactly want to tell them heâd been woken up with a kiss from a man who made his heart sing, after falling asleep wrapped in each otherâs arms. That was his alone to rejoice in.
The next two weeks were much the same as their last five; a whirlwind of texts and soft smiles when their eyes met at work, among the many âno, weâre all sold out of those nowâ to people who left their Christmas shopping until a week before the date and were surprised everything had gone â like it didnât happen every year. The only difference was that now they held hands over the table at Takiâs as they spoke, Thalia beaming at them whenever they stole kisses while sharing pastries. They didnât notice that, though.
They spoke more about dating, than before; previously, Alec had always carried a small burden of shame that heâd never been in a relationship, but Magnus, with all his experience in good and bad relationships, never treated it as a set back in any way. He had a knack for making Alec feel comfortable in his own skin.
âIâm covering a shift tomorrow, by the way,â Alec said, after a few minutes of silent contemplation. Magnus quirked an eyebrow.
âMy last day,â he said. âCanât say Iâm sad, but the place did bring me you, soâŚâ
Alec snorted. âRun while you still can. Iâll just miss seeing you at lunch every Saturday.â
âWell, I still have Saturdays free. I see no reason why I canât still meet you every so often â it might do me good to get out of the house and work on my paper.â
âYeah?â Alec grinned, indescribably happy. Neither of them had defined what was between them yet, and that was okay; it was like they were still the best of friends, with the added bonus of kissing, and yet Alec was still surprised that Magnus, beautiful, kind, intelligent Magnus, wanted to spend time with him, read his writing and told him it was masterful, urged Alec to be a better version of himself simply by being there.
âYeah,â Magnus grinned back. âAlso we should go back.â He laughed at Alecâs groan.
âAh ah ah!â they heard Thalia shout as they left the cafĂŠ. Alec turned, curious; itâs not as if theyâd forgotten to pay â had they left anything? âLook above, just for you two loves,â she yelled happily.
Magnus chuckled. âMistletoe, Alexander. Shall we?â
Alec laughed, and leant in, and made a note to ring Thalia later and leave his number, so she could send him the photo she very obviously took.
Sunday was like every Sunday, but times ten; heâd agreed to cover someone in the ladies department for a change of pace, and was kinda wishing he hadnât. He had, at least, made plans with Magnus to get dinner and spend the night, which powered him through the chaotic day.
Before they could escape however, Jia, the store manager, gathered everyone around the doors. Alec groaned inwardly. Heâd forgotten that she did this every year, giving them all a speech about how high the quality of seasonal staff was, and how it being the 23rd it was most of their last days anyway, and blah blah blah. Alec mostly tuned it out in favour of his favourite activity â looking at Magnus.
âGonna miss your lunch date, Lightwood?â Duncan called out once Jia had apparently finished, laughing, though nobody laughed with him. Alec smiled, knowing exactly what he had to, and wanted to, do. He lifted his arm to embrace Magnus shoulders as he moved to his side, not needing words to know what Alec planned, arm snaking around Alecâs waist and hand settling comfortably on his hip.
âWell, now weâre no longer co-workers â I guess Magnusâll just have to settle for being my boyfriend instead, huh?â Alec raised an eyebrow, daring Duncan to say anything. By the look of his reddening face, he had nothing, suitably ashamed by the smiles on every other associates faces â even Jia cracked a smile, and Alec thought he heard Simon whooping as Magnus pulled his face in for a quick, yet tender, kiss.
âWeâll just have to go on more actual dates, I suppose⌠boyfriend,â Magnus said to him as they left, Magnus for the last time as a staff member.
Theyâd agreed not to get each other gifts, Alec thought; and had ended up giving each other the best gift they could possibly have gotten. Alec had a boyfriend for Christmas for the first time ever, and as he held him close, Alec resolved that heâd never let him go.
The moon looked brighter than normal as Alec sat watching it reflect on the fast approaching tide. It had been a week since his mother had confided in him about the coming divorce, every minute since he had noticed every thing that he parents did that could have warned him that there was something wrong. Their broken love was evidence enough to Alec that left be was a lie made up to give people false hopes. And with this new proof his last shreds hope had disappeared.
Heâd been spending more time on the beach lately, as if the sea itself was calling him back after each day that help him relax and pretend everything was okay. The world itself was oddly calm, so calm they the institute was on high alert, but Alec still snuck out to watch the waves reclaim the shore.
He looked even more miserable today, the boy on the shore was staring almost straight at him. Despite how calm he looked there was a clear sadness surrounding him. Magnus had been watching him since his visits had started a month ago, but this past week he had had a less vibrant aura about him. In his first visit, even though he seemed tense from stress, the boy had a vibrant and joyful aura as if he had been surrounded by people that made his stressful life worth living.
In the early days Magnus had felt jealous of the boy for having people in his life that could make him feel this way, but now he could see that even life on land was flawed and could break even the brightest of people. But if his mother had taught him anything when he was young is that sometimes you have to give someone their brightness back, even if itâs just by being near them. With that he propelled himself gracefully toward the shore through the water.
Alec saw something glimmer just above the water in the distance but assume itâs was a wave. He let out a deep sigh and began to rise from the sand, using is hand to wipe of any that cling to his clothes. He looked one last time to the horizon then moved is gaze to the crashing waves. There on the edge of where the water was reclaiming the sand was a young man, he seen d to be missing a shirt and his legs weâre covered by the rising tide. Alec approach cautiously and called for them, their head rose from the sand and as soon as he saw their eyes he stopped. The deep browns danced together and despite the dark colour, no eyes had ever seemed brighter.
Magnus knew this boy was special but only as he stared into his hazel eyes, the greens so bright the eyes seemed to glow and the brown adding depth that seemed to lead to his sole. Looking now, Magnus knew that this moment was where he was destined to meet the one. His body jolted up in shock and aw causing he emerald tail to rise above the water. This caused the boy to back away but not too far, Magnus could see his curiosity even through the shock.
The tail was the last thing Alec expected, but still he couldnât leave, the same pull he felt towards the sea. The sighting of a merfolk was practically unheard of even for shadow-hunters that has been trying to find them as part of a project to discover their lifestyles. But here he was looking, more like staring at one, with both curiosity and a well hidden sense of belonging.
âAre you the one to give me hope again, or is this a magic used to harm me?â Alec questioned with false confidence, worried that the world was out to get him.
âThe only thing I wish to do for you, pretty boy, is give you back the brightness that someone has stolen from you,â Magnus knew the flirt was a bit much but he had his one true chance at happiness in front of him and he wasnât gonna waist any time.
âI-I, um,â Alec blushed furiously. âUm, okay, but I should probably tell you that Iâm not what you are probably expecting.
âThat the thing, that donât expect anything, I just wait and see.â
