Iâm finally posting my secret santa fic on here! This was written for the lovely @intangibel.Â

âSpecial Agent Alexander Lightwood, I presume?â
Alec watched with careful eyes as Magnus dropped from the rafters above, shadows hiding the beginning of his descent, ending with Alec feeling more than seeing him land elegantly in front of him. Despite how close they were, only a thin strip of light illuminated Magnusâ chest, leaving his eyes to glow in the darkness. Alec tried to ignore the flustered red he could feel traveling up his neck.
âBane,â Alec nodded curtly. âDo you have the information we asked for?â
âI do.â God, even his voice. The tips of Alecâs ears burned.
He waited for Magnus to elaborate, but it quickly became obvious that he wasnât going to say more.
Alec huffed impatiently. âWe donât have all day, Bane.â
The man chuckled, his smirk shaping the sound. âAre all Clave agents this rude or am I just lucky?â
â Bane.â
âOkay, okay.â He held up his hands defensively, grin never faltering. Alec swallowed, hard. âIt doesnât hurt to have a little fun, you know.â
âNot when the lives of three million people are at stake.â
Magnusâ smile froze.
âAlexander, this relationship is never going to work if weâre not honest with each other.â
Magnus started to laugh again but stopped when he saw the look on the agentâs face.
âYou donât know?â
âDonât know what?â
âThree million?â He hissed, lips curling into a scowl. âYou think only three million lives will be affected by Valentineâs terror?â Magnus finally stepped out of the shadows, eyes flashing dangerously. âTry three hundred million.â
Alec faltered, losing his cool demeanor for just a second, but Magnus immediately saw it. His expression hovered between stunned and terrified, and taking another step forward said, âYou really didnât know, did you?â
Alec stayed silent, jaw and fists clenched with the naive hope that Magnus hasnât come to the same conclusion that he has.
âWhat else do you know? â he finally said.
Lips pressed together, Magnus broke eye contact and looked at his fingers before tossing his head to the sky, seemingly exasperated, and yet--were those tears in his eyes?
âI canât believe I didnât put it together until now.â
Thatâs it. Alec closed the remaining space between them, wrapping his hand around Baneâs shirt and pressing him into the wall behind him.
âStop fucking around Bane and tell me what you fucking know.â
Those were definitely tears. It didnât stop Magnus from meeting Alecâs eyes, defiant yet panic-stricken, and Alecâs stomach turned. âThe Clave isnât looking for Valentine. They already have him, because heâs the one in charge and has been since the beginning.â
---
Magnus lets the rest of his martini slide down his throat, eyes resting on Alexanderâs shoulders across the room. It had been three months since they last interacted, that night in the warehouse where they realized they had both been played. Alec had left suddenly, with no explanation, shortly after Magnus revealed that Valentine held more ground than they ever thought possible. Magnus was an optimistic person, naturally, but he had never felt so hopeless than he had in those immediate moments, alone and petrified of what was to come.
But then he got a call a week later informing him that the Clave had fallen, that Valentine was in custody of a third party, The Institute, and that 300 million lives had been inexplicitly saved seemingly by a miracle.
But Magnus knows better. He remembers the look in Alecâs eyes after he said 300 million. Alec hadnât shifted his eyes and dropped his composure because he hadnât known about it: he hadnât known that Magnus also had that information
So now Magnus was here, following Alexander Lightwood through New York, trying to discover how a young agent was able to take down a secretive criminal operation within a week. There were worse ways to spend a weekend.
Leaving his glass behind, Magnus glides over to where Alec sat at the bar, a half-glass of gin resting between his hands and thoughts seeming to weigh heavy in his mind. Magnus notices his knees bouncing against the stool, slightly shaking the glass that he raises to his lips. Itâs followed by a quick swipe of his tongue that Magnus canât look away from, and only the sharp thud of the drink realigns his focus.
Magnus carefully leans against the counter, hand playing with his ear cuff. âBuy me a drink?â
Alec only glances at him before taking another swig. âYouâve already had three martinis since Iâve been here, you sure you want more?â
Magnus grins wildly, loving that Alexander had eyes on him the moment he walked into the bar. âDo you think I canât hold my liquor, darling?â
Half of Alecâs smile is enough to daze Magnus for a second, and he canât help but follow Alecâs finger as he lifts it to the bartender.
âSo,â Alec empties his glass to let the bartender refill it, âWhy have you been following me, Magnus?â
âWho says I have?â
Alec rolls his head to Magnus, criticism in his eyes. âYouâre not as good as you think you are.â
âMaybe I wanted you to know.â
A small chuckle escapes Alec, and he simply lifts his glass in cheers. Magnus hides his grin as he tilts his drink to meet Alecâs.
âI havenât heard from the Clave for a while.â
Alec hums.
âWas wondering why that is, I figured you would know.â
Alec shakes his head, âIâm not here to talk work. Iâm retired.â
Magnusâ eyes flash, not unlike how they did in that warehouse, and Alecâs gaze locks onto them.
âWell thatâs the best news Iâve heard all night,â Magnus hides a smile behind his martini. âThough Iâm surprised the Clave let you go.â
Alec shoots him an inquiring look but casually says, âThe Clave has been rid of me for years now.â
âOh?â Magnus says just as casually. He likes this energy with Alec, fun and flirty and relaxed in a way he hasnât allowed himself to be in a while. âIâve changed my mind, this is the best news Iâve heard all night.â
That makes Alec laugh again so Magnus joins him, enjoying the way the sounds bounce of each other, and Magnus realizes he wants to hear it again. Suddenly, Alecâs gaze blatantly drops to Magnusâ lips and it takes all of Magnusâ willpower to not kiss him, already leaning forward before he realizes what heâs doing but he doesnât want to stop. Their eyes meet, and Alec smiles.
âYou were really instrumental in the whole thing, you know.â Alec states and Magnus tilts his head.
âI didnât actually give you any new information. You knew of Valentineâs influence the whole time.â
âNot the whole time,â Alec cuts in quietly, and Magnus hears the history behind it. He doesnât press. Alec continues, âBut we thought we were the only ones that knew just how dangerous Valentine was. You obviously were well aware of the full extent of things, so we realized we had a mole. And that mole led us straight to Valentine.â
âWell then,â Magnus raises his glass, âLooks like we have something to celebrate. Better late than never.â Alec smiles and looks younger as he lifts his drink for another cheer.
âAnd no one better to celebrate with,â Magnus adds with a wink, and Alec feels the rush of red creep up his neck again but says âI agreeâ with a smirk, willing to spend the rest of the night getting lost in Magnusâ eyes.
---
Magnusâ breath tickles the back of Alecâs ear as he regains consciousness. Heâs effectively trapped, hooked between Magnusâ chin on his shoulder and leg between his thighs, chests rising and falling in tandem. Alec wraps an arm around Magnusâ back, jostling a small noise from him that Alec quickly attempts to soothe. Careful not to wake him any more than he already has, Alec lets Magnusâ head roll onto his shoulder as he resettles, pressing a kiss to his partnerâs forehead. He tangles a hand through Magnusâ hair as he lets himself fall back asleep.
When he wakes up again Magnus is pressing kisses on his neck, tracing a hand across his chest.
âGood morning,â he says softly, his rough voice sending shivers down Alecâs spine. Alec turns his head slightly to kiss Magnusâ forehead, lips meeting next as Magnus tilts his head up. They kiss lazily, hands traveling along toned muscles and brushing messy hair. Magnus shivers when Alec places another kiss on his nose.
âItâs not supposed to feel like this, you know,â Magnus whispers, thumbs pressed against Alecâs hairline.
âI know,â Alec murmurs, âBut Iâm not complaining.â
Magnus lets out a breathy laugh, and Alecâs eyes shine. âNeither am I, darling.â
Alec takes a few moments to tuck a strand of hair behind Magnusâ ear, trailing fingers along his jawline. His thumb finds Magnusâ lips. âI do have to get up soon.â
âUnderstandable, but know that I am in strong opposition.â
Alec giggles and Magnus stores it away as part of his ever-growing list of sounds he wants to hear Alexander create every day. One last kiss falls onto Magnusâ lips as Alec rolls out of bed, and Magnus can only groan.
âI could hate you for this,â he mutters, still underneath the covers. Alec leans forward, bracing himself with his hands to bring his face right up against Magnusâ.
âCould you, though?â Alec asks with his bottom lip between his teeth and Magnus thanks the stars that he doesnât have to stop himself from capturing Alecâs mouth with his own.
âNever,â Magnus swears, and Alexanderâs responding smile is only rivaled by the rising sun spilling into the room. Â

âAlec, stop worrying and start trusting me. You called me for a reason, didnât you?â Alec rolled his eyes but kept his mouth shut.
âGood. Thank you.â His sister was starting to sound irritated. âDark wash jeans, one of your work button downs, and the black pullover sweater I got you for Christmas last year. You still have it, right?â
âYes, Iz. Somewhere. I think,â Alec muttered, emptying his shirt drawers to look for the sweater he definitely hadnât worn. He didnât remember donating it, so there was still hope.
âOkay, found it.â
âWhat do you mean, âfound itâ? Ugh, you really havenât worn it, have you? You know, I go through a lot of effort looking for things that suit you but arenât ten miles out of your comfort zoneâŠ.â
Alec stopped listening.
âThanks Iz, I owe you one,â he said as he jabbed the END CALL button on his phone. He hated fussing over clothes, but he wanted to make absolutely sure that he made a good impression tonight. Or, at least, a better impression than what his typical wardrobe of well-worn jackets usually did. Izzy knew style, hence his last-minute panicked call for advice.
Alec raced through the shower and threw the prescribed outfit on, combing his hair before heading downstairs to the kitchen. The invitation clipped to the fridge said the party started at 6pm, and it was already 5:57. He stared at the gift heâd picked up that afternoon on his way home, still wrapped in its plastic bag from the store. âFuck. Wrapping.â
He ran back upstairs to his guest room, shoving the closet doors open and praying that thereâd be something he could use. There. A roll of plain green wrapping paper, most likely left over from his sister from when she had stayed with him over the summer. Perhaps he owed Izzy more than one favor at this point.
Back downstairs, Alec hastily wrapped the gift and grabbed the bottle of Pinot he brought for Luke every year, nearly stumbling on his way out the door. Calm down, he told himself. Itâs just a party. He picked his way down the sidewalk and around a stray snowbank or two, thankful that at least he didnât have to worry about parking; the street was already packed with cars.
Lukeâs house was, by far, the most decorated one in the neighborhood. Wreaths topped with red ribbons hung on every window and candles shone from every sill. He must have used something like a mile of string lights because every single edge of the house dripped in softly glowing icicles. The giant tree in the foyer was visible from where Alec stood on the sidewalk, glittering with silver and gold ornaments.
But never mind the decorations â Alec had to remember that tonight, he was on a mission. It was time. It was past time, really. Heâd just have to buck up and be brave, and do the thing he came here to do.
Right. Here goes nothing.
He rang the doorbell and was immediately greeted by Luke, fashionably dressed in no less than Saint Nickâs signature red velvet suit, arms held wide open.
âBro-ho-ho! Alec!â
Alec snorted and shook his head. âReally, Luke?â
âYes, really. Tonight, Iâm Santa. Donât diss the beard man, and come on in.â Alec handed Luke the bottle of wine and followed him through the kitchen and into the den, where a second tree was set up, cluttered with presents underneath. Alec looked around the room, taking in a few familiar faces that were already paired off in deep conversations.
âAh, almost forgot. Here,â Luke shoved a stocking toward Alec and gestured inside. Alec drew out a folded post-it note with the number seven on it and shoved it in his pocket.
âPut your gift under the tree and make yourself comfortable, Alec. Mix and mingle, like Olâ Kris Kringle,â Luke chuckled, already backing toward the kitchen to greet his next guest. âOh, and Maia insisted on taking over Nog duty this year, so⊠well, just be careful not to stand next to any open flames, if you get my drift,â Luke said over his shoulder.
Alec smiled. âGotcha.â He turned toward the makeshift bar set up at the back of the room and raised his hand in hello to Maia.
Internally, though, he was groaning. This was the part of the party he always hated. Not this party specifically, but really, any party. Small talk was much more Izzyâs thing, even their little brother Max was better at it. For godâs sake, he was a thirty-year-old man and he couldnât even manage to attend a party by himself without feeling awkward and out of place. He busied himself by heading to the kitchen to make a plate of appetizers; at least heâd look normal holding some food.
Before settling down in an empty chair, Alec took a loop through the crowd in each room, pretending to look for someone in particular. Well, perhaps it wasnât pretend. That didnât mean he actually intended to talk to the person he was looking for. Not right away, at least. Heâd have to come up with a something to say first.
Alec looked down at his plate, trying to identify what was in the pile that had been labeled âMexican Dipâ that heâd generously scooped onto his plate. There wasnât much âMexicanâ about it, and the cheese had re-solidified. Maybe it was best to just leave it be for now.
âAh, alcohol; helping us survive Christmas one sip at a time. Itâs Alexander, right?â Alec nearly choked on the bacon wrapped scallop heâd been chewing on. He turned toward the voice and found he was being handed a festively decorated Solo cup filled to the brim with eggnog. Magnus.
Magnus, who was loud, attractive, and always perfectlyâ though often unexpectedlyâ dressed. Alec raised his eyes to meet Magnusâ, immediately imagining himself melting into a puddle just like Frosty the Snowman threatened to. Magnus was generally flirtatious with everyone, but Alec hadnât been able to help but watch him from a safe distance every year. Alec had come here tonight with the express intention of at the very least talking with him, and if he was feeling brave enough, hopefully flirting back.
Alec had attended Lukeâs annual Christmas party almost every year heâd lived on the street, but this was the first time heâd be attending as an officially out and proud gay man. Well, out. Proud was still a work in process, no thanks to the ongoing icy relationship with his parents. Logically he knew he had nothing to be ashamed about and that his sexuality was nobodyâs business but his own, but his motherâs sharp tongue and fatherâs disinterested tone still tended to cut at him unexpectedly, even a year after coming out to them. That announcement, or actually the resulting blow up, is what had kept him from missing the partyâhis annual opportunity to oogle Magnus Baneâlast year.
Alec stared at the drink in his hand, trying and failing miserably to come up with something to say that wasnât âfinallyâ or âthank god.â
âYou looked like you could use a drink; did I read that wrong?â Magnus asked him.
Alec felt completely too caught off guard to properly respond. He thought heâd have more time to plan this interaction, why is his brain suddenly blank?!
Alec shuffled his feet and was saved from further embarrassment by Luke shouting from the kitchen.
âCome one, come all! Get your asses to my den so we can get this party started!â
Alec snorted. It sounded like Luke had been sampling some of Mayaâs eggnog.
Magnus touched Alecâs elbow lightly. âWell, shall we?â
Still terribly confused, Alec followed Magnus. Why on earth was Magnus talking to him? Of all the people at this party, Alec had to look the least sociable. There were far better conversationalists; even Dot, his 80-year-old neighbor, could keep a person interested long enough to tell a story or two.
They made their way through the crowd and took a seat on the stairs in the corner of the room.
âAll right, thank you everyone for coming. Itâs always nice to end the year with all of your faces and all of this booze.â
âHurrah!â
âAnyway. Thanks for all the presents, you can all go home now.â
âFoâ real this time! To those of you who havenât had the extreme pleasure of participating in our little holiday extravaganza exchange, here are the house rules: each of you has brought a wrapped gift and put it under the tree. When you arrived, you were given a folded piece of paper with a number on it. Whichever of you lucky sonsabitches has the number 1 will pull a gift from under the tree and unwrap it for all to see. Because there were some, uh, shall we say disagreements, last year, I will allow visual inspection of the gifts. You may pick them up and gently shake them, just donât unwrap them until youâve made your choice. And, Mr. Bane⊠apparently you need the reminder that there will be NO CHOOSING OF THE GIFT YOU BROUGHT.â
âBut I bring fabulous gifts!â Magnus exclaimed, clearly disappointed that heâd been caught out. Alec stifled a chuckle.
âAnyway, the next guest will choose a gift from under the tree and model it, and then that sucker gets to choose to either keep that gift or choose from one that has already been opened. I am placing NO LIMITS on the number of times a particular gift can be stolen, or the number of times a poor soul can be stolen from.â
âAh, I see weâve graduated to the âDirtyâ version of the game,â Magnus murmured. Alec turned to look at him and found Magnus smirking, eyes filled with glee. Alec raised an eyebrow in question, but Magnus just responded with a shake of his head.
âWe will continue in this manner until all those presents are unwrapped and we swing back around to number 1 again â who has that, by the way?â
*Ragnor raises his hand*
âOk, Ragnor⊠at the very end, you get to choose from all the gifts, including the one you unwrapâ
âDamn it, that means Iâm stuck here.â
âYou were stuck here anyway, my friend. No one leaves until weâre doneâŠ. With both the presents and the booze!â
Alec looked down at the folded paper in his hand. Hastily scribbled on it was the number seven. So much for lucky number seven⊠heâd only have a handful of gifts to choose from unless someone stole his gift near the end of the game. Magnus peered over his shoulder to steal a glance at Alecâs paper with a smile and a murmured âPerfect.â
Perfect? Maybe Magnus had been looking at something else. But Alecâs attention was quickly drawn to Ragnor grumpily unwrapping the gift in the pile that had been closest to him. He finally managed to get the box open after struggling with a particularly stubborn tape job and a soft-looking throw blanket slid out of the package, piling at Ragnorâs feet.
âLovely,â Ragnor muttered with great distaste. He shoved the blanket into the corner of the chair he occupied and crossed his arms. âNext victim!â
âAh ah ah, Ragnor, you have to model it!â chastised Luke. Ragnor looked at him in horror, but then bucked up and shook the blanket open to drape it around him. Alec tried to stifle a giggle, but seeing the grouchiest man he knew draped in a Snuggie was wonderfully entertaining.
âHowever this night ends, this moment right here has already surpassed my expectations,â Magnus said beside him, shamelessly clicking off a half a dozen photos of Ragnor pouting in his chair.
Alec nervously stood to choose his gift from the tree. It wouldnât be so bad if he didnât have to choose the gift and open it so publicly. Something about being on display like this always made him uncomfortable. He reached for a smaller square box wrapped in purple and silver paper â at least it was practically guaranteed not to be a Snuggie. He turned around to unwrap the gift in view of the rest of the party and was relieved when the paper peeled aside to reveal a Bluetooth speaker. Huh. Something heâd actually enjoy taking home for once. âA Bluetooth speaker!â he called out to the rest of the crowd, holding it up for those who might not be able to see it.
âNice!â
âExcellent choice, Alexander,â Magnus praised him when he returned to his seat.
âThanks. Although I guess I should really be thanking whoever brought it. This is a pretty cool gift.â
âYouâre very welcome, then.â Alec looked up, immediately caught by Magnusâ happy grin. âIâm glad you like it.â
A thought suddenly occurred to Alec.
âBack there, how did youâknow my name?â came tumbling out of Alecâs mouth. Great. Perfect. Smooth, Alec.
âWell, I admit that it did take some detective work on my part. I had to ask Luke weeks ago if the brooding tall tree of a man would be attending this year, as I was remarkably disappointed by his absence last year,â Magnus said with a sly smile. âAnd there you were, brooding away in your corner.â
Alec ducked his head to try to hide the smile rising to his lips. âWell, you werenât here yet. I had to wait somewhere.â
That seemed to spark something in Magnusâ eyes, at least.
âSo it would seem. How have we gone this long without having a proper introduction? Iâm Magnus,â he said, extending his hand. Alec took it in his own, immediately relishing the warmth radiating from Magnusâs palm.
âDo you prefer Alec, or may I call you Alexander?â
âUhâŠâ Maxâs sarcastic voice echoed in his head. You can call me anything you want, as long as you call me. âPeople usually call me Alec, butâŠâ Alec trailed off, shrugging.
âAlexander it is, then.â Magnus smiled. âSomething tells me that if I ask you to tell me about yourself, I wonât get the kind of detail Iâm looking for. What if I were to ask you about this tattoo, instead?â As he posed the question, Magnus trailed a finger along Alecâs neck down his throat, causing goosebumps to chase after it.
âAh, um. Thatâs⊠I guess you could call it a symbol of protection? It means âdeflect.ââ
âLike a shield?â Magnus asked, an eyebrow raised in interest.
âExactly. Iâve had a lot of ⊠well, my relationship with my parents has never been great. So when I got this one, it was like this reminder to myself to block out the bad things they said. Plus,â Alec found himself continuing, âhaving it so large and visible it may have really pissed them off.â He smiled. He canât say he enjoyed that fight exactly, but he did feel freer afterward.
âI donât doubt it,â Magnus chuckled. âIs that the only one you have?â
âNo, I have quite a few, actually. But the rest arenât so, well, visible,â Alec mumbled, feeling a blush rise. For a moment there, heâd been ready to take off his sweater and his shirt to show Magnus the tattoos on his torso.
âI see,â Magnusâ eyes glowed. âOr rather, Iâd like to; at some point in the future. Perhaps this isnât the time and place.â
Alec flushed and looked down at his hands. His attention is grabbed by the crowd around him laughing in unison; somehow, the game has moved on while he and Magnus been wrapped in their own little bubble. Someone had unwrapped a towel, half of it labeled âFACEâ and the other half âBUTTâ.
âNow thatâs certainly more of a White Elephant gift than one for a Yankee Swap⊠can you say âregiftâ? Oh, that poor soul is stuck with that one, Iâm afraid.â
âI didnât realize there was a difference between the two games.â
âAh, then you must let me enlighten you. Popular theory is that the term âwhite elephantâ came from a story about the King of Siam, who was considered to be quite the evil genius. He had a brilliant way of exacting revenge on any courtier who dared displease him â he would present them with the precious gift of a rare albino elephant. At first, the unlucky courtier would be pleased as punch, thinking that they had impressed the King. But little did they know that caring for one of those elephants was a huge and costly pain in the backside and would likely lead them to financial ruin. As such, it was called a âfatal gift.â I believe the story dates back to at least the 1850âs, but as far as Iâm aware, no one has been able to verify that such a king existed. Nonetheless, the term still persists in popular culture.â
âWell Iâm not sure that towel will lead anyone to financial ruin, but I guess I canât say itâs a gift I would have liked to unwrap.â
Finally, Magnus springs to his feet when Luke calls for number twenty. Magnus tiptoes through the remaining gifts and makes his selection. He flings the tissues paper out of the bag until he reaches his prize: a poster-sized world map covered in the same scratch-off material lottery tickets are made of. Before Alec has a chance to realize whatâs going on, Magnus has plucked the Bluetooth speaker out of Alecâs hands and replaced it with the map.
âNext number!â Magnus calls out as he reclaims his seat next to Alec, ever so closer than they had been before. Alec smirks. âI guess Luke didnât forbid stealing your own gift, huh?â
âNo, he did not make that distinction, did he?â Magnus asks around a wink.
The game continued around them and Alec is pulled back into his bubble with Magnus. They discover a shared love of tv shows (Magnus considers himself a bit of a pop culture whore) like the Runaways and the 100, and discuss how interests of younger generations typically have a bad reputation with older generations, even though the same values and lessons can be found in them. That topic carries them until Luke asks for number twenty-nine. Magnus, caught mid-sentence, raises a finger to Alec in a request to hold that thought and rises to select another package from the tree. He returns with another gift to plop in Alecâs lap and takes back the world map.
Alec is terribly confused.
âWhatââ is all he gets out before Magnus interrupts him with a wry smile and a finger to his own lips.
âShhh, Alexander. Youâll see.â
Magnus takes the opportunity to ask Alec more about his tattoos, and Alec eventually stammers that each of the tattoos heâs chosen have both a deeper personal meaning and a purposeful placement on his body. That, in turn, leads to a rather lively discussion about deriving strength from elements of pop culture like music, shows, and movies, and how fictional characters can be inspirational figures in real life. Before they get too far down that path, theyâre interrupted again.
It turns out, that in addition to numbers twenty and twenty nine, Magnus also has numbers thirty three and thirty seven. He steals Alecâs gift every single round. Finally, once he has seemingly completed his turns, he takes a moment to whisper in Alecâs ear.
âLuke never puts a limit on the number of gifts that can be brought to the exchange. If you bring multiple gifts, you get to take multiple gifts home. I see it as a way to increase my odds of taking home something I want. And before you ask, I had this plan to steal your gift every turn before I even walked in the door tonight. Speaking to you before the game and witnessing that adorable blush was just the cherry on top.â
Alec doesnât even know where to begin.
âMay I be presumptuous, Alexander?â
âIf you must. I can probably handle it. Maybe.â
âWould you like to find some place a little less rowdy and continue our conversation over a nightcap?â
Alec takes a deep breath. âI know just the place, actually. And it has the benefit of being close by, since I donât think any of these guys are in shape to move their cars.â
Alec helps Magnus with his coat and gestures down the sidewalk. Magnus takes his hand, and the words âcheeks are nice and rosy and comfy cozy are weâ echo in his head.
They continue their discussion of how tattoos have helped Alec unlock his truth (with each one he gets, he feels a little more sure about who he is and what he stands for, what he wants to fight for). Magnus responds that he feels that Alec has unlocked something in him as well.
Alec tugs on Magnusâ hand to pull him to a stop in front of his house. âWell, weâre here,â he stammers. Magnus chuckles, clearly surprised but pleased that Alec has led him here. Fuck, thatâs probably the smoothest heâs ever been, and he has no proof for Izzy that he came up with it himself.
âMay I ask another question, Alexander?â
âYou can ask me anything you want, Magnus.â
âDo you believe in the theory of soulmates?â
âI believe itâs possible.â
And reader, he kissed the living daylights out of that man.
Dear Floralegia - I hope you enjoy this bit of fluff!

Paint the Town Red (Or Blue, or Green, or Maybe Wallpaper?)
âSo,â Alec, said with one final sweep of his hand and a flick of his fingers, and every window was lined with christmas lights, adding a multi-coloured glow to the back of the room, âwhat do you think?â
Magnus looked it all over thoughtfully, turning in a slow circle to take in all of the decorations that Alec had put up for their apartment. After a close perusal, he turned and stepped forward to kiss Alec sweetly on the mouth. âI think itâs wonderful , darling! Tonightâs party is going to be amazing!â Magnus said with a grin. He spun around again, taking in the entire space. âYou really are getting better every year.â
Alec looked incredibly pleased with himself, even if his cheeks maybe got a touch pink, âI do listen to you.â
Magnus laughed, âHonestly, they werenât that bad before, either, from what Iâve heard.âÂ
Alec didnât say anything, just raised an eyebrow with a look of extreme doubt.
Magnus laughed again, âThere is a difference between âuninspiredâ and âbadâ, darling.â
Alec rolled his eyes, but he was smiling again, so Magnus counted it as a win. âHey, do you-â He cut himself off when his phone started to buzz. He sighed when he saw it was a text from the Institute. âSorry, love, Iâve got to check this.â
Alec gave him a lopsided grin. âThere is no such thing as a day off for the Head of the Institute.â
Magnus turned around and pointed at him, with a determined look on his face, âThis Head of the Institute will be taking several days off, all in a row, this summer when weâre on our honeymoon.â
Alec smiled back, wide and bright, happiness shining in his eyes, âI canât wait for that, fiance of mine.â
Magnus grinned, âImagine how much better it will be when you get to call me hus-â
âHey!â Alec cut him off, but his voice was teasing and playful, âyouâre not allowed to say that and you know it. No jinxing of anything.â
âJust because the last few times we planned our wedding didnât work out-â
âNo!â Alec said, and he was still grinning, but his voice had a serious note in it that was lacking earlier, âwe are not talking about those times, and we ware not talking about anything else either!â He paused and walked to Magnus, leaning down to kiss him on the forehead, then on the nose, then on the mouth, soft and sweet.
âI want to be married to you so much, Magnus Bane.â
Magnus smiled then kissed Alec back, âI think that might be able to be arranged.â
âYou mean it is currently being arranged?â Alec asked, happiness clear even through his sarcasm.
âI might mean that.â Magnus agreed. His phone buzzed again in his hand and he took a step back, âSorry, Alexander, I really must-â He stopped when heard the distinct crackle of a fire message start. The flaming letter finished burning itself into existence and Alec reached out and grabbed it out of the air.
First, Alecâs eyes went wide, then his mouth dropped open a little, and then slowly, he lets the hand holding the letter fall to his side. âMagnus.â
Magnus frowned and quickly he swiped open the message from the Institute, needing to make sure itâs nothing urgent so he can ask Alec about whatever the fire message said that has him looking like that.
His mouth dropped open when he read the text. He looked up at Alec, looking surprised and maybe just a touch nervous. âAlexander, that was from the Institute. They were saying they just got a fire message from the Seelie Queen.â
Alec held up his message, âSheâs coming to the party tonight.â
Their eyes met for a long moment before they both turned to look at the apartment. âWeâre going to need to redecorate.â Magnus said, and Alec just nodded in agreement.
It wasnât that Alecâs decorations were offensive or lacking in any way, but⊠it was the annual winter mixer that Alec had been hosting for decades. When Alec had lived alone, the decorations had been a bit perfunctory, but after Magnus became part of the picture, it had become something that they enjoyed doing together. They would tour the apartment, deciding on new themes and styles, and having Alec magic it all up until it looked exactly like they wanted it to.
Usually the mixer was mostly vampires, werewolves, and a handful of local warlocks. Since Magnus had started coming, the number of Shadowhunters attending had started to climb as well, but there had never, ever been more then a few Seelie knights who would show up simply to make sure the Seelie court had a presence there.
It didnât mean it was anything close to what they would need to pull out in order to impress the Seelie Queen.
Magnus held his hand out to Alec, âWe donât have much time, so we should get started.â
Alec smiled gratefully and reached out, tangling his fingers with Magnusâ. âStart in the living room?â
Magnus shook his head, âThe living room is the largest and always takes us the most time. Letâs get everything else done first.â
Alec nodded, and they walked to the balcony, hand in hand.
It only took a few minutes to add the needed touches of glamour to the balcony set-up. The walls were now lined with trellises of flowering vines, the balcony itself was covered in spanish moss that was lit up from tiny multi-coloured lights that Alec had created.
The next stop was the banquet table, which simply acquired a few new plates of food. There were suddenly huge trays of roasted vegetables and sugared fruit.
(They skipped the library, as they always did, because Alecâs library never needed any improvement. The walls were made of translucent stone slats, there was a massive marble fireplace along one of the walls, and, of course, there was a ladder in a track for moments when a person needed to slide across the library while holding a book.)
When all of the easy things were done, they found themselves back in the main room of the apartment, looking the huge, empty space before them.
Alec looked over at Magnus, tilting his head, âIdeas?â
âDo we want to keep the theme in here?â Magnus asked, looking around.
âThere...isnât really a theme in here.â Alec admitted. It was true - it did look nice, but it didnât particularly have a strong sense of cohesion anywhere.
Magnus frowned and started at the walls, considering. âMaybe some purple?â
It took a flick of Alecâs hand for the walls to be covered in a deep, rich, royal purple. The trim along the ceiling and floor were both in lavender, and the carpet was a deep forest green. It was nice, butâŠ
âThis isnât doing it, is it.â Alec said with a sigh.
Magnus shook his head, âI agree, thereâs something about it thatâs missing.â
And so, the trouble started.
There was paint, and wallpaper, designs out of films, books, paintings. Nothing seemed to be the perfect mixture of friendly and welcoming, while keeping an air of whimsy but still looking sophisticated.
There was wallpaper patterned with metallic peacock feathers (far too busy, Alec took it down after it hadnât even been up for a second.)
The walls were filled with massive paintings of horses (which came down as soon as Magnus pointed out they were having kids around, and no one wanted to have to be constantly watching the walls to make sure no children accidentally knocked anything down.)
The tree-patterned wallpaper was shot down by Magnus for being both too boring and too busy.
Black and gold was too stark.
Red and green was too obvious.
It was when Alec spread his fingers to call up a deep brown wallpaper patterned with green felt fleur-de-lis that Magnus halted the proceedings.
âDidnât we already do something like this?â He asked with a frown.
âWhat?â
âWeâve already done green patterned wallpaper.â Magnus clarified.
âWeâve already done many things.â Alec pointed out, sourly, but then he sighed. âI think I know what you mean though. Iâm starting to lose track of where weâve been.â
âWhen mundanes are repainting, they do test patches on the walls,â Magnus said, âwe could do something like that? Just do squares to see what we think, and then maybe we can come back to it.â
Alec looked over at Magnus then nodded. Alec raised is hands and then sliced his fingers through the air, and when he pulled his hands back to his chest, the walls were covered with square patches of every design that they had tried that evening.
There were patches that were practically pure glitter, patches that were deep, rich matte tones, wallpapers of all colours and textures, there was a patch of rustic wood paneling, a panel of glowing lava-lamp spread across the wall. There were panels of metal, panels of mosaic, panels of murals, one section where Alec had joking turned the wall into a lit-up, moving picture of the Horsehead nebula.
The wall was full, simply because theyâd tried out so many designs.
The last thing either of them was ready for was a knock on the door. Isabelle waited a few seconds before opening the door - enough time for Alec to magic them to rights if she was about to walk in on anything they didnât want her to see.
She made it about three steps into the apartment before she stopped and stared at the wall. âI must admit⊠that was not what I was expecting.â
âIz, youâre early, please help!â Alec said, looking at her with wide, pleading eyes.
Isabelle raised an eyebrow and looked at it, âI think you should keep it like that.â
Magnus glanced at the wall then looked at Isabelle, with a look of thoughtful consideration taking over his face. He turned to Alec, âShe does have a point, Alexander. It would certainly be a conversation point.â
Alec frowned at both of them. âYou two are always the ones telling me that the theme is key to a party!â
Isabelle shrugged, âSometimes your theme can be eclectic.â
Magnus grinned, âThe unexpected is always good.â
Alec stared at them, then looked at the wall, then back at Magnus and Izzy. âI will never understand parties.â
Magnus and Izzy laughed, but it was kind.
âItâs alright Alexander,â Magnus said, walking over to him and kissing him on the cheek, âThatâs what weâre here for.â
Alec grinned, âFor forever, fiance?â
Magnus leaned up to whisper into Alecâs ear, âIâm here for you forever, husband.â
Alec spun then, catching Magnus around the waist and kissing him soundly - which was, of course, when the entire Seelie contingent walked through the door for the party.
The Seelie Queen looked around, taking in the patchwork wall and the myriad of decorations still covering the living room. âI can see why they said these parties have become much more interesting lately.â
Alec blushed a bit at the mention of his previous parties. He glanced at Izzy and Magnus, âIâve been working on it.â
The Seelie Queen looks at the three of them and smiles, looking oddly kind, âI would say that you have certainly succeeded Mr. Lightwood.â
It was only a few minutes later for the rest of the guests to begin arriving, and everyone would stop when they walked in the door, needing several moments to comprehend all of the many styles that had somehow been combined onto a single wall.
It was Madzie who saved the evening, when sheâd run in and looked at it, then raced over to Magnus and Alec.
âItâs all mixed up right?â she said gleefully.
Alec looked confused, but he nodded.
âAll mixed up, in one spot, just like us tonight!â
Alec and Magnus glanced and each other and then smiled at her.
âThatâs right, Sweetpea,â Magnus said, âItâs just like us tonight.â
When Alec was 8 years old he made a wish. It was silly really. He was out on his first patrol alone. He wasnât scared, of course not. He just had his rune ceremony. He was a Shadowhunter now. But it was dark and cold and he was vaguely lost. So he wandered the streets of New York for a couple hours until he knew his father would accept him going home. On his way back to the institute he saw a bunch of mundane children laughing and playing next to a huge tree. Alec knew it was one of those mundane holidays but he didnât know which one. He watched them all under the guise of demon patrol. He heard one of the parents ask the kids if they had their wishes ready. They all cheered and looked up to the shiny star at the top of the tree. They closed their eyes and were quiet for a moment. He didnât understand the significance but since he was done patrolling he closed his eyes and made a wish too.
He wanted to find someone who would love all of him not just parts of him. His soulmate had to be tall but not as tall as him. Alec was gonna be super tall when he grew up he just knew it. His soul mate had to like cats because Alec loved cats and was totally gonna convince his mom to get him a cat some day. In fact he wished extra hard that his soulmate would have eyes like a cat. That way even if Alec never got a cat heâd still have a cat. His soulmate should be kind but with the ability to command. They had to be funny because Alec loves to laugh even tho it didnât happen often. They had to have a good heart and most importantly they had to be as magical as this wish.
Alec opened his eyes and took a deep breath. The other kids had left and he was alone staring up at the tree. He shook his head and went about getting back home.
17 years later. Pandemonium.
Alec ran in behind Jace who of course ran in past Izzy who was on the trail of todayâs lead on a nest of Shax demons. As Alec surveyed the room his eyes stopped upon a large crowd in the VIP section. His eyes followed the ruckus until they found what was causing all the hubbub. A man. With spiked hair. Makeup Izzy would drool over. Dressed to the nines. He was leaning back on a couch being served food and drink like he was a Roman king. Alec let his eyes linger longer than he should given why he was there in the first place. But there was something about this man that pulled him in. It felt almost like a force outside himself was controlling him. He took a step closer. He reasoned with himself that this was surveillance. His feet took him to the VIP platform before he realized how close he was.
âShadowhunter. Can I help you?â
Alec shook his head. He looked for the voice which had spoken to him. It was HIM.
âNo. Yes. No. Looking for demons. Sorry.â
âDemons? In my club? How thrilling.â
âRight well Iâll just uh, leave now.â
âShadowhunter? Do come back after youâve saved us all from danger!â The man said with a wink.
Alec nodded shakily then retreated. A blush rose to his cheeks.
âMan where have you been? Izzy and I totally found our lead. You ready to get shit done?â
Jace sauntered to where Izzy was stationed. Alec turned his head one last time towards the man on the balcony. So many opportunities at the tip of his fingers but no, he had responsibilities.
Alec wiped the ichor from his dagger before strapping it back onto his thigh.
âWell that was eventful. So glad you dragged us out tonight.â
Jace rolled his eyes. âHow was I supposed to know it was an academy drill?â
âWell now that weâve showed up a bunch of 12 year olds can we go home?â
â Yeah, yeah. Go on back. Write the report. Do what you do. Iâm going back to the club. There was a redhead who I could not stop staring at.â
âMaybe Iâll-â
âWhat big brother? Come with?â Izzy laughed.
âYes. Iâll come with. â
âWell fuck. Did you hit your head bro?â
âIâm fine. Letâs just go before that redhead goes home. â
Alecâs deflection worked like a charm. Jace and Izzy turned on their heels and headed back towards Pandemonium. Alec followed.
He had no idea what he was doing but it felt right.
400 years earlier. Batavia, Dutch East Indies.
A child roams the streets. Wandering aimlessly. Listlessly. He looks at his hands and sees his motherâs blood. His eyes glow. Red Magic sparks at his finger tips. Heâs in control for the first time in his short life. When he lifts his head he sees a shower of stars above him. His mother would always place him on her lap when they looked at the stars. The boy climbed a nearby building and laid back on the roof to watch the stars, to mourn his mother.
As one particularly large star shot by he closed his eyes and made a wish.
A best friend. Someone to hold his hand when he got scared. Someone strong and stoic. Someone kind with a beautiful smile. Their eyes the color of the soil with trees and oceans reflected in them. They had to defend the weak and save the innocent. They had to love him even when he didnât love himself.
The boy opened his eyes as the star fizzled out of sight. A single tear rolled down his face. He needed to start a new life. He closed his eyes again and brought forth all of his magic. When he opened his eyes a man stood in front of him. He tilted his head. The mans eyes glowed like his did.
âCome my son. Come home.â
The boy tilted his head. âWho are you?â
âIâm Asmodeus. Prince of Edom.â
â Iâm...â. The boy was silent. He could never go back. âIâm Magnus Bane.â Â
â Magnus. I like that. It suits you.â
âThank you.â
â Come to Edom with me. Youâll rule by my side.â
Magnus didnât know who this man was but he had nowhere else to go. He stood up on shaky legs and took the manâs outstretched hand.
âWhy?â
âBecause Iâm your father.â
Asmodeus grasped Magnusâs hand and snapped them both to Edom. This was the start of something new.
Present day. Pandemonium.
Magnus rolled his eyes as yet another faerie sidled up to him offering favors and promises. He shooed them away. He was looking for the tall Shadowhunter from earlier. There was something so intriguing about him. Something familiar that he couldnât put his finger on.
He sipped at his drink as he watched the dance floor. As his eyes skimmed over the pulsing crowd he sees a flash of pale skin and dark hair a head above the din. Â
He sat up straighter and followed the dark head if hair to the bar.
âExcuse me my dears. I must go tend to my people. You understand?â He addresses the faceless bodies writhing on top of him. He straightened his jacket and walked with purpose towards the bar. The sea of bodies parted for him.
Magnus sidles up to the Shadowhunter at the bar.
âCome here often?â
The man turned to him mid eye roll. When the Shadowhunter realized who had spoken his features softened.
âIâm Alec. And no. Iâve never been here before. â
âShort for Alexander?â
âYes. â
âExcellent. Iâm Magnus. Pleased to make your acquaintance.â
Magnus, through no volition of his own brought his hand up to stroke Alecâs cheek. Alec tilted his head into the touch. This stranger tugged at his heart strings in a way he didnât understand.
âIt feels like I know you. But I donât. Weâve never met. But it feels like Iâve known you my whole life.â Â
âI know darling. I feel it too.â
Magnus leans in and breathes Alec in. He closes his eyes to try to center himself. When he feels in control he opens his eyes and hears Alec gasp.
âYours eyes.â
âShit! Iâm sorry. Please donât leave-â
âLeave? Why would I leave?â
âEveryone leaves when they see this side of me. This terrible ugly side. â
Magnus looked into Alecâs eyes. Got lost the pools of brown, green and blue.
âSoil, trees and oceans.â Magnus whispered.
âWhat?â
âYour eyes. I-this is going to sound crazy. But I think, I think I wished for you.â
Alec laughed and leaned in closer. Their lips almost touching. He cupped Magnusâs cheek.
They kissed. It was like all the noise and pulsing lights stood still. Nothing else mattered but this moment. They kissed as if they had been together all their lives. They kissed as if time and space had created them for each other. They kissed as if love never knew itâs purpose until this moment.
Alec pulled away first. Breathing heavily. He trailed his hand down Magnusâs arm and laced their fingers together. He brought their hands to his lips.
âI wished for you too.â
They looked at each other intently. They knew this was the beginning of their future. The end of their (up til now)mundane lives. For even the warlocks magic couldnât compete with the magic of true loveâs wish.
