Hi all! At long last itâs time to post my preview for the @yoilitmag ! Please support the project if you can, everyone has put forth a ton of effort towards making some really wonderful pieces for issue 2 (theme: time).
Summary: After thirty years of living in California, working as a travel agent to drum up business for his familyâs onsen, Yuuri finds himself out of the job, completely alone, and surviving his day to day life, rather than ever really living it. Itâs not the right time to find love, but like the rotation of the earth around the sunârelentless in its projected courseâYuuri finds he might not have a say in the matter.
Yuuri squints at the hours of operation sign peeling off the one-way mirror door of his nearby neighborhood bar. The late August sun peers over his shoulderâa judgmental interloperâscrawling the fine lines around his eyes and mouth in deep wells of inky shadow and sticking his shirt to his back with sweat.
He wipes his forehead with his arm, checks the time on his phone. 11:34. The bar has barely opened. The thought of being labeled a pathetic Tuesday morning drunk burns the back of Yuuriâs neck like a branding iron, but his shame seesaws with a surge of heart-squeezing anxiety. He pushes his way inside before reason has time to settle, the specter of Yuukoâs inevitable disappointment trailing hot on his heels. Â
She corralled him into her apartment only a few days earlier.
âWe need to talk.â
âUh oh.â Yuuri lowers himself onto the tripletâs old stepping stool, one of the few remaining furniture pieces not wrapped up in bubble wrap and piled Tetris-tight into Yuuko and Takeshiâs station wagon. âAre you breaking up with me?â
Yuuko lobs a balled up real estate ad at his head. âBe serious.â
âYou better listen to her,â Takeshi warns from the kitchen. Heâs facing away from them at the stoveâhip cocked to one side, stirring the curry for tonightâs dinner. âSheâs been in planning mode for months trying to figure out how to mother you from Japan.â
Yuuri rubs his sweaty palms on his thighs. Heâs dizzy from the smell of spices, the heat of the apartment crowding in on all sides. He picks up a business card from the pile of past graduation programs and long-expired warranties Yuukoâs sorting, runs his finger across the gold embossed lettering. âOnsen Travel Services,â a relic of his former life.
âYou should be worrying about how to keep up with the girls.â
âThe girls call me every day,â Yuuko says. She tucks a newspaper-wrapped framed nursing certificate into the box at her foot and settles back into her chair, tucks a loose strand of silver-threaded hair behind her ear. âYouâve lived next door since we were kids and you wonât even respond to a text.â
âItâs hard for me to read the screen.â
âYou read off a screen all day.â
âThatâs not reading, thatâs...â Yuuri pushes a hand up under his glasses, presses his fingers into his eyelid. âSo...socializing?â
âArguing with strangers over the delivery date of their shower beer caddies isnât socializing.â
âBut arguing with you about this is?â
âThis isnât an argument,â Yuuko clarifies with a finality that exemplifies her thirty-odd years raising three headstrong future lawyers. âItâs a discussion. Whenâs the last time you left your apartment?â
âYesterday.â
âFor something other than groceries.â
Yuuri feels a trickle of sweat drip down his spine. He stares at a phone number scrawled on the back of the business card, a Rorschach blot of ultramarine where the ink has bled out from sweat or maybe tears.
âIâm not trying to criticize.â Yuuko leans forward to touch his knee. âI know itâs been a hard year. I just...I donât want you to end up one of those old men who die in their apartment without anyone knowing.â
Yuuri flinches.
âWhich is why...â Yuuko waits patiently, lets her intentions hang until Yuuri lifts his eyes to meet hers. âI set up a date for you.â
The words settle into Yuuriâs brain one by one. Separate, at first, âdate, what about the date, how can she set up anything when sheâs leaving tomorrow morning?â Then all at onceâa disorienting deluge. âYou...what?â Yuuri asks when heâs recovered enough to speak.
Takeshi whistles low from the kitchen.
âHeâs from my seniorsâ yoga class. Heâs nice. And handsome. Youâll like him.â
Yuuri clenches the business card in his hand. The sharp cardstock edges crease his palm. âYouâve got to cancel it.â
âItâs not that serious,â Yuuko insists. âYou can go to the park, maybe the aquariumâŠâ
âWhat if heâs a murderer?â Takeshi offers wryly. Â Â
âRight, one of those yoga-loving serial killers theyâre always talking about in the news.â Yuuko bats off the suggestion with a wave of her hand. âHe dresses his dog in sweaters. Heâs completely harmless.â
âWhat if he doesnât like me?â Yuuriâs lungs cave in, his breathing stilted and uncomfortable. âIâm...itâs been years. What do you even wear on a date?â
âYou look fine in what you have on,â Yuuko says. Yuuri looks down at his tattered sweatpants in disbelief. âTakeshi, tell him he looks good.â
Takeshi sets two bowls of rice on the table, the third nestled in the crook of his arm. âYouâre sexy and you know it.â
Yuuri doesnât know it. He clenches his fingers into his greying temples on the morning of the âdateââa Tuesday because Yuuri had hoped the odd hour would dissuade his mystery suitor from showing. He paces the length of his living room like an animal in a cage, his thunderous heartbeat shaking his hands, pushing into his throat.
Yuuri has spent the past year bleeding out his days in a stagnant cycle of meaningless work and sleep, but now he feels the pulse of every second ticking in the back of his mind like a countdownâthe overwhelming need to move.
Heâll go on a quick walk, he decides, to get some air, clear his head. It isnât until heâs a mile down the road, pushing his way out of the overbearing heat into the damp, air-conditioned cold of a nearby bar that reality descends.
Thereâs another patron inside. Yuuri sits two stools over from him, staring hard into the depressing depths of his third early afternoon screwdriver. He wants not to care, but he keeps catching pieces of him in his periphery. The pink cuff of his rolled sleeve, the length of his thigh straining the seams of his slate grey slacks.
Yuuri glances over for a better look, to complete the Picassian puzzle of Eastern European cheekbones and manicured fingers poised around a half-empty vodka tonic. Heâs met with clear blue eyesâbeauty thatâs only sharpened by the influence of time pushing against his hairline, wrinkling his forehead like a silk sheet.
âThe loneliest men in town, right?â The man lifts his drink, toasts the open air with a wink. âYou can sit closer, you know. No need to be a stranger.â
Yuuri would normally turn away, pretend not to have heard, but heâs been staring. Still is. A rare breeze plays at his back. He stands because it feels less awkward than the alternative.
âThere we go,â the man says when Yuuri settles in next to him.
Yuuri swallows a mouthful of his drink. The vodka loosens the words from his throat. âI donât normally do this.â
âDo what?â The man asks with a lax smile.
âCome here,â Yuuri clarifies. âDrink before twelve.â
The man raises his eyebrows, his smile curves down almost imperceptibly before righting itself again. âShould we leave then?â
prompt: phichit and victor bonding over dealer's choice!
happy birthday dommi!! this is also sort of a promo for the fic iâm writing for @yoilitmagâ, in collab with @somethingyoirelatedâ!
âYou really should be more careful,â a sing-song voice resounds next to Viktor. He turns to see a familiar grin beaming in a familiar tan face; moments later Phichit Chulanont swings his camera bag down onto the bar and hops onto the barstool with an eager glint in his eyes. âSome unscrupulous photojournalist might stop by and find their next headline: local dating app founder possibly an alcoholic?â
âThis local dating app founder has a reason to drink,â retorts Viktor, glumly swirling his chardonnay. âHave you seen what Yuuriâs wearing today?â
Phichit purses his lips. âSince I donât live with him, no?â
Viktor takes a swig of his drink. âItâs the worst.â
Phichit tilts his head to one side. âWorst as in âdevastatingly badâ or âdevastatingly goodâ?â
âHow does someone manage to pull off glittery cashmere and flannel?â retorts Viktor, rubbing furiously at his temples. âHe looked like a university prof. But like, a good one. One who desperately tries to avoid having relationships with his students, but finally succumbs to the temptations of one talented young man after his final examsâŠâ Phichitâs sudden coughing fit jolts him back to reality. âI mean. Itâs nerdy. But cute.â
âClassic Yuuri,â agrees Phichit. âI remember what he wore the first time he got interviewed for the St Lidwina Chronicle: jeans, this hilarious Engrish t-shirt, and the biggest, frumpiest grey cardigan Iâd ever seen.â
âThe âwatching, of dogsâ one, right?â Viktor asks. âAnd itâs styled like your regular beware of dog sign?â
Phichit nods. âHas he gotten more of those shirts? His sister sometimes sends over some from Japan as gag birthday presents.â
âMy favourite is the âkawaii is fuckâ one he got after a holiday trip back home,â Viktor admits. âIt resonates with me, you know? Especially the rhinestones.â
âHave you seen the âAre You Nasty?â shorts?â wonders Phichit. Viktor pauses, contemplates it.
âNot yet?â
Phichit snorts. âGood luck if you do, then,â he replies, patting Viktorâs arm. âHe showed up to a Barre class wearing that once. I think half of the students passed out.â
It takes Viktor a couple minutes to realise the strangled noise is coming out of his own throat. âIâm going to die,â he whines, chugging down the rest of his wine. âHeâs going to drive me into an early grave.â
âIâve survived him,â Phichit points out. âYou can do it, too!â
âThatâs because youâre interested in someone else,â Viktor says, with a pointed nod towards the bartender and wine bar owner, Christophe. Said man is currently explaining the menu to some other customers. Phichit shakes his head.
âI can assure you, Yuuri was as much of a problem for me as he is for you.â He winks, claps Viktor on the shoulder. âGood luck! I believe in you.â
Viktor flips him the bird.
Itâs barely a week later when Viktor finds himself knocking on the door to Phichitâs darkroom. âI brought croissants,â he says, and moments later the door swings open to reveal Phichit, smelling vaguely of chemicals as he eyes the paper bag in Viktorâs hands. âItâs a Uniqlo legging pants day.â
âSounds terrible,â replies Phichit. Viktor holds the bag out, and he reaches in for one of the croissants and takes a large bite of it. âDoes he have his cuffs rolled?â
âYes,â says Viktor immediately. âHis ankles are a bit bruised from the dancing, but theyâre so beautiful.â
âThatâs your weird foot thing, not mine,â says Phichit, shaking his head. âThough I do agree â Yuuriâs feet are extraordinary. You know, because he can rest his entire body weight on the tips of his toes.â
âHe doesnât go en pointe as often as others,â Viktor remarks as he bites into his croissant. âHe just has to make sure not to drop his partners, which means heâs ââ
âSwole as hell?â finishes Phichit. âHave you gotten him to lift the sofa yet?â
âI havenât done anything thatâd warrant that, no,â Viktor says, sighing. âItâs easy to reach under our sofa for vacuuming, anyway.â
âYou can thank me later if you do manage to get him to do it,â replies Phichit, before vanishing into his darkroom again. Viktor sighs, before striding away down the hall.
A couple weeks later Phichit gets a text from him.Â
Itâs one word: thanks, and a picture of Yuuriâs biceps flexing as he holds up the sofa with a questioning stare, as if asking Viktor why he couldnât just reach under like he usually does.Â
Viktor also keeps a copy of that picture. For, you know, a rainy day.
Phichit comes over for dinner one evening, trailing shortly behind Christophe whoâs brought a couple choice bottles of wine. âI picked up some macarons from the bakery you like,â he chirps to Yuuri as he sets down his box on the kitchen counter. Christophe is already uncorking one of his bottles. âI got a little of everything, if thatâs alright.â
âHow am I going to eat dinner knowing these are waiting for me?â Yuuri demands as he peers into the box, longing written plain across his face. Viktor hides a snort into his wineglass.Â
The oven timer rings, and Viktor starts to shoo them out to the living room. But Phichit lingers, hovers a little behind Viktor. âDo you need any help?â he asks.
âDid you see Yuuriâs outfit?â Viktor replies as he takes the roast pork out of the oven. Phichit looks over into the living room and makes a sudden choking noise.
âOh my god,â he says. Viktor laughs as he starts to carve the ham. âShould I congratulate you?â
âIâd like that,â replies Viktor sweetly. Phichit claps his back.
âCongrats on the sex,â he replies. âI feel slightly obligated to give you a shovel talk, but both of you are older than me and probably should know better. So just â do things that I wouldnât do.â
Viktor snorts. âThanks for that advice.â
âHe looks better in your shirt than you ever did, by the way.â Phichit winks, pouring himself a glass of wine as he does so. Viktor finishes carving the ham and sets to work on an accompanying quiche. âIt fits you, but itâs an artistic loose on him. Love it.â
âI didnât dress him. That was his own damn fault.â Viktor smiles, and nods towards a stack of plates. âHelp me set the table?â
Phichit takes a sip of wine before setting down the glass and grabbing the stack. âSeriously, though, it was about time,â he says.Â

Hi! This is a bit late, but here's a preview of my piece for @yoilitmag! Please support this project! Everyone's works are super amazing. :)
Summary: In a reality where the most honest representation of a human being is the light that their soul gives, Yuuri dances; Victor loves.
-----
Up until this moment, Yuuri has always held Victor at a distance. At first, itâs because of the idolization (read: in what reality are you really here?), but later, Yuuri realizes that itâs out of fearâthat niggling urge to give into self-preservation. Victor canât decide to dislike him if he doesnât know him, right?
âYuuri.â
And Yuuri blinks, brought back from the turmoil of his thoughts as he recalls Victorâs question.
Victor stands in front of him, one palm lazily held up as he effortlessly maintains a tiny floating sphere of silver as a makeshift lantern of sorts. Yuuri eyes it wearily and unconsciously rubs at his chest. âNo lights, please.â
Immediately, Victor drops his palm. Even in the dark, his expression can be obviously identified as concern. âYuuri?â
Yuuri shakes his head. Not now.
âYou want⊠to sleep,â Yuuri instead repeats haltingly. âInside my room?â
Thereâs a moment of reluctance.
â...Yes!â Victor exclaims, letting the matter go and nodding enthusiastically with a smile thatâs far too charming to be completely genuine.
âTo sleep?â Yuuri asks again hesitantly, unsure if the usual connotations of the phrase applies or not.
âTo sleep, yes,â Victor says, trying to seem at ease while standing awkwardly by Yuuriâs doorway. He fails, but Yuuri is hardly one to point it out. He, of all people, is prone to his own bouts of anxiety, after all. For all that the world has forgotten, Victor Nikiforov is still human.
Human. Blue eyes shadowed just like his and a smile straining on his lips. The tightening grasping of a pillow against a chest and a poodle heeling obediently by his feet.
Yuuri coughs. âWe can⊠not sleep?â
The strained smile is stretched wider. âOh?â
And Yuuriâs cheeks redden at the implications of what he has just said. âAh, no!â he says, shaking his hands wildly, âI meant we can do something else! Talk. We can talk? Do you want to talk, Victor?â
âOh.â The smile drops, but the way Victor suddenly regards him is differentâsofter and perhaps a little bit more fond. Then Victor ducks his gaze, and heâs laughing quietly. âSure. Letâs talk, Yuuri.â
I got the amazing opportunity to participate in the pilot issue of the brand new @yoilitmag zine where both writers and artists are featured! Thereâs honestly such an array of amazingly talented people who worked on this issue, and I canât wait to see everyoneâs reactions!
Hereâs a sneak preview to my story: Royalty comes from what you do
Relieved it was still on the tray in the room, Viktor glanced around, realizing that this wasnât the work of the maids as the room itself still looked the same as it always had aside from the slight changes. With a silent huff, he walked into his inner rooms and paused when he saw that someone was asleep in his bed. Walking quietly towards it, he smiled, seeing familiar ears poking out from underneath the blanket, hands curled into fists on the pillow. Sitting down gently, Viktor reached over to run a hand through the dark hair, laughing softly when his hand was followed by the head for more caresses.
Slowly one of the eyes slid open, revealing stunning eyes that almost seemed to glow with flecks of light, making it seem that constellations were painted into the very recesses of his eyes. The blanket slid down to his shoulder, revealing more and more of his face. If Viktor leaned a bit closer, he could see the clothes he wore followed the consistent black and white theme heâd always worn, yet it almost felt ethereal, for the shirt was lined with stars and constellations, telling a story Viktor had heard numerous times before.
âBlessed morning, Yuuri. It has been a while, has it not?â He carded a hand through Yuuriâs hair, smiling to himself at the soft whine that the action elicited.
