Zane tells the godborns the truth. He tells them that the gods are missing, stuck in 1987, and only three other gods remain standing. Zane hoped it would rally people to defend their parents. But these godborns never knew their parents. Now they're angry, they're afraid and they know they have superpowers. So what do you think happens? If you answered: "they say we need to kill all the gods and start a new world order," you'd be correct!

These little Jacobins in the making start chanting "Godborn Power! Godborn Power!". They mock Brooks because she's just a Nawal. They're bloodthirsty little revolutionaries who want to paint with the blood of the gods. So you know what? I kind of hope the timeline changes. Because if the rescued gods in 1987 then start claiming their kids earlier, we don't get these psychopaths running around with god complexes.

And again, this is what the Titan Army in Percy Jackson should have been portrayed as. Luke Castellan was bitter, so he listened to Kronos and gave in to a lust for blood and for power. His legions planned to kill the gods, probably kill the titans too, and then take power for themselves. A bunch of blood crazed bolsheviks and jacobins. Violent revolutionaries with anger clouding their minds, they planned to just make themselves absolute rulers of all they surveyed.

• First off, the cover art is beautiful. Bravo, Irvin Rodriguez. You've produced for a beautiful purple and turquoise colour scheme that only makes me think of the northern lights or southern lights or something. One of the auroras. It's beautiful. Your best work yet.

• Now…the plot summary on the front jacket gives me some concern. The mayan gods all vanished, zane betrayed, the godborns using a mayan calendar to travel back in time…gods, i'm getting reminded of The Secrets of the Immortal, Nicholas Flamel. If this book follows that book's finale…oh, brother. We might be in for a rough time. I don't need time traveling shenanigans ending with Zane stuck in the past or something. If you go that route, these books will really disappoint me (the same way those Flamel books did). So please…please tell me that doesn't happen.

• Finally, we have Itzamna giving the book's preface and warning that Zane couldn't write it. He says I may not like it, depending what narrative type I prefer. Then he really seems to imply the mayan gods are gone forever. So…i'm really getting concerned here. Is this book going to be a confusing time travel story? Is that really where we're going? Are we going to meet the ancestors of our protagonists? I…ugh. This can't be worse than the crap ending those flamel books had (where the lead characters parents were aliens and then the kids became secretive allies to their future selves in a surrealist plot twist). …can it?

The positives involve the fact that there's a happy ending to the book. Zane and his friends mostly end the book on a high note. Zane's dog gets the ability to look like a regular dog (while also being able to shapeshift into a hellhound). The romances our author had been setting up presumably come to a beautiful bloom. The villians are defeated and all is safe. But a group of those angry and violent godborns I mentioned before (the violent revolutionary ones who wanted to kill their parents and steal their powers)…well, they escaped. So that's a good sequel hook, which explains how these books successfully scored themselves a sequel trilogy (I think).

But my one negative is just that I don't love how they defeated the villians. Mostly because I think it's possible for them to escape the time loop they're trapped in. I don't care what the book says, a time loop is a time loop. It's always gonna be possible to escape something like that. It's gonna be hard, but it's not impossible. Time magic is still magic. It wears down with the passage of time. Someday, Ixkik' and her son are gonna escape their prison. And it's going to be because you didn't build a good enough prison for them. I stand by that opinion, even if it is kind of bleak. Because I don't think it was a satisfying conclusion to her villainy. Maybe I'll change my mind later. But right now i'm sort of running on post read adrenaline and I don't really like it.
