I don't think Alec knew for sure that Magnus wasn't going to be able to just pop back like he did in 310. Magnus didn't explain his plan to him. I think Alec started crying because Edom is just a dangerous place in general. Even though Magnus has royal blood. Alec fell to his knees in devastation when he saw the rift was sealed and Magnus wasn't back yet. I think that's how Alec found out Magnus couldn't just pop right back. Because if he could, he'd be back already.
Oops, I just had a chance to rewatch the scene, and I got the timing of the scene a little wrong. Alec was already crying on his knees before the rift was sealed. Also the writer tweeted that the original cliffhanger for 3x20 got moved to the beginning of 3x21 and he hinted that it involved Edom. Maybe that cliffhanger would have explained the situation more?
Thatâs what Iâm assuming, yeah. Letâs theorize what the cliffhanger-that-was-promised was, shall we?Â
I think itâs Magnus in Edom, just after closing the rift, trying to open a portal just for Lilith to show up and be like âDo that, son of Asmodeus, and it will open again.â

Is the double-line right after Alec makes his spatula crack.
Magnus asks if the box âis still an issue for youâ. (Not us, just Alec.) And Alec agrees. Itâs MY issue.
Like he believes he shouldnât feel this way, like he has no right to feel this way, like he shouldnât be burdening Magnus with his reaction, and I honestly think most of the anger in that spatula comment was aimed at himself, not Magnus.
Put it in your box because itâs doing better at this than I am, at least if all youâve got is a memory it wonât keep doing things wrong.
And Magnus didnât notice, because Magnus thinks he understands why Alec is upset about the box, but I donât think he does, not really. Alecâs emotional reaction to things is almost never what Magnus thinks theyâre going to be.
But Magnus is old, and heâs learned things in his life, and heâs had this conversation before, and itâs probably always gone about the same way, so he canât see the ways that this one is different.Â
Which leads exactly into what little of the argument weâve seen so far. Theyâre saying entirely different things to each other! And Magnus is reacting to what he thinks Alecâs not saying, and Alec is reacting to Magnusâ assumptions, rather than either of them hearing what they ARE saying.
/itâs great and mature and in character and #everything hurts
Also lots of people are saying they think a Malec proposal or wedding would be rushed. But really none of us know if itâll feel rushed or not. We donât know if thereâs going to be some type of time jump. And even if there isnât a time jump itâs best to just watch the show. If you want to complain after the episodes have aired that it was too rushed, have at it. But at least give the show a chance.
Also, since the show was cancelled we may never have another chance to see a Malec proposal or wedding ever. While the showrunners and cast want it to get picked up there is no guarantee. And I would rather get a Malec proposal/wedding that is more ârushedâ than to have none at all.
I swear if they have Magnus in Edom for all of 3B like in CoHF then Iâm gonna cut a bitch I need malec to reunite at the end of 3x10 or someoneâs gonna pay
If Magnus winds up going to Edom soon because he feels responsible for the love potion and Claryâs soul being taken, and wants to find a solution that way, I am going to cry and throw something

What I like about this is that Alec has not considered that Magnus is not invincible and can be killed. Itâs going to be a shock when he realizes that Magnus may not survive Edom. It will make the immortality talk irrelevant.
...He [Magnus] really has deal with ramifications from season 2B: siding with the Seelie Queen, and getting all the warlocks behind him... (x)
So, the spoilers to s3 are implying that Magnus may lose his title of the High Warlock of Brooklyn.Â
The main fanon theory (and I agree with it) so far is that the warlocks may not be happy with both Magnusâ decision to side with the Seelie Queen, and his personal relationship with the Head of the Institute, aka the person who lied about the Soul Sword. So, here comes Javier MuĂąozâs character Lorenzo Rey, the warlock, who may or may not be Magnusâ predecessor (as some theories say, the âBeing the High Warlock meant everything to himâ line may refer to Lorenzo, for all we know), and he attempts to take over the title from Magnus.
Itâs a very plausible theory and the one that will probably turn out to be canon. Â
But what is with the status of Magnusâ deal with the Queen, after her aiding Valentine? Is it still on or is it off?Â
In 2x19 Magnus said that he made some official deal with the Queen, where he, supposedly, pledged loyalty on behalf of the Warlock community. Did they sign some legal papers (contract)? Did Magnus make a blood oath? Was it a verbal agreement? But, most importantly, what was the exact wording of that contract? And what are the legal (for the lack of the better word) consequences for breaking the deal?Â
Knowing the Seelieâs cunning nature, and the fact that the Queen had an upper hand in that situation â after all, it was Magnus who needed her help, not the other way around â itâs probably safe to say that the nature of the deal didnât discuss the possibility of the Queen siding with Valentine. So, technically, her betrayal doesnât necessarily mean that the deal is automatically âoffâ and isnât âlegalâ anymore, after the events of 2x20.Â
Obviously, from our point of view, Magnus has all right to consider himself free of any obligations after the Queenâs betrayal... but is he? Even if he is free personally, is the Warlock community, on behalf of which he made the deal, free from these obligations as well?Â
Now, letâs look at this situation from the point of view of the Queen. She clearly wants to unite the entire Downworld under her own wing. She was very much enjoying her power at the emergency meeting of the Downworld Council in 2x19, where she made the other three leaders keep their silence, and let her do the talking on their behalf. The thing is, she wasnât showing off her powers to the shadowhunters / Alec only, she was also displaying her power to the other three â Raphael, Luke and Magnus.Â
And considering that Magnus was the one she openly treated like her lapdog â not letting him answer Alecâs question and making him leave with her right after the meeting was over, itâs safe to say that neither Luke, nor Raphael made any official long-term deal with her like Magnus. Sure, they kept their silence at the meeting (hence Magnusâ offer to drink in the scene prior) but it didnât look like they went into direct negotiations with her.Â
Now, it seems like the Queen went into great lengths into grooming and manipulating already emotionally vulnerable Magnus into making a deal with her... on behalf of the Warlock community of Brooklyn. So, the question is whether she wants Magnus, the powerful warlock, the son of Asmodeus, at her side, or her ultimate goal is much bigger and itâs not him that she wants, but his community under her power?Â
The similar question concerns her relationship with Simon â does she want him as a Daylighter, or does she want him as a potential leader of the Vampire community? After all, as we had seen in s2B there are a lot of vamps out there who wouldâve loved to join Simon, had he ever decided to form his own clan. Many vamps from Raphaelâs clan were ready to betray him for Simon.Â
The Queen is a power-hungry immortal monarch with an absolute power within her own Court. So, it would make sense if she wants to become even more powerful having not just the Seelies as her subjects, but also the other two immortal races â Warlocks and Vampires. One of the ways to achieve this is to have the leaders of these two races under her little thumb â given that theyâre all immortal itâs a very long term deal, that benefits her in every way (also would explain why she doesnât seem to be much interested in werewolves, given that theyâre mortal).Â
So, returning to Magnusâ ordeal, itâs understandable, if the warlocks in his community would be less than happy upon finding themselves bound with whatever legal (or whatever other) obligations to the Seelies.Â
On the other hand, can it be that the deal may have given the Queen the rights to intervene into Warlocksâ internal politics? If so, considering that Magnus is no longer loyal to the Queen, theoretically, it would make sense, if she wanted to change the High Warlock, and have in that position someone, whoâs a lot more willing to cooperate with her. Similarly, the same way with the Vampires â instead of wasting time on grooming Raphael, itâs easier to go around, and make a rival Vampire leader out of Simon, the Daylighter.Â
Then again, of course, this is just a wild theory (and I am overanalyzing and overcomplicating things); it all depends on what was the exact wording of Magnusâ agreement with the Queen, how much power [over himself and / or his people] did he give her exactly - in exchange for her providing refuge for warlocks in case of the mass genocide.
When you picturing Malec reunion or back together, how you see it? I just cant decide, part of me want Alec go easy and understanding but there's a part that want to see Magnus squirming and unsure a little for making my baby cry.. lol
You know, these next couple episodes are going to be so packed, Iâm having a hard time envisioning how theyâre going to do the Malec reunion. I donât want to see Magnus apologetic or squirming, because like I said in my recap, his point is 100% valid. If Alec disregards duty and chooses Magnus, heâll face censure from his people. If Magnus disregards his duty and chooses Alec, heâll face genocide. So itâs a lot easier and safer for Alec to say âwe can find a way to work things out and have it allâ than it is for Magnus, because the stakes he faces if they fail are not equal.
So I think the Malec reunion needs to have two key elements before it can ever happen.
1) Magnus has to see that whatever the Seelie queen has in mind is potentially more disastrous for him and his people than the neglect, paternalism, hypocrisy, and bigotry of the Clave.
2) Alec has to break with the Clave and stand up for the Downworlders against them. Magnus wonât be willing to side with the Clave. But he will stand beside Alec, if Alec decides to place himself as a shield between the Clave and the Downworld.
And that act, that gesture of Alecâs, is what is going to reunite them. Alec will make it explicitly clear that he is willing to prioritise Magnus and the safety of the Downworld, and if thatâs the case, then Magnus will see maybe Alec is right, maybe they can have it all.
