Like, I find Merrill to also be incredibly selfish and short sighted and elitist but she’s still a compassionate, driven, caring person who believes in her goals. Oghren is a study in missed chances writing wise and his leering and rape jokes make it impossible for me to actually take him places, but also, if you tell him he’s being a shit dad, he gets it together for the sake of his baby and clearly throws himself into being a warden to ignore his very real PTSD that he will confide about with you. I can tell Sera I think she’s selfish but all it does it make her curl in on herself more and the more you say “Sera you have to think through what you’re doing” the more indignant and self-righteous she feels about being a selfish idiot (see: her literally stopping for a moment when you tell her the march was partially her fault too before resolving to justify her bad behavior no matter what you say, no matter how high her approval is with you). Shit, Leliana can make Fantasy Racist comments about elves and you can be straight up aggressive with her about it and not only will she approve of you calling her out, she thanks you for the perspective change. But if I do much as mention being an elf in her presence, I get disapproval, even if I’m talking about me being an elf personally and not pushing anything on her.

I just hate penis jokes which she says a lot of and feel she never takes anything seriously and is purposely offensive. Maybe I don’t understand her? Idk

Because a large section of this fandom thinks that morality is determined by how many marginalized identities you have. Sera is one of the most obviously neuro-divergent characters in the series, she’s the only lesbian companion, and she’s also an elf, which some people treat as if it’s exactly the same as being an *actual* character of color. Apparently all of that makes her more worthy of love and forgiveness than actually being a good person would.

“Sera is a t*rf” is an interesting thing to read, but she definitely does have a few transmisogynist comments.

Ok. Buckle up. I have a long soapbox about her and it’s not profound or deep so I’ll condense it because yall either agree or won’t.

Sera is the fucking worst. I don’t mean because of her self elf hate or the complexities of her romance (which I of course have never done but I skimmed the videos as I did with all the romances I didn’t play through just to experience the story). She is the fucking worst because she is written like someone a high school edge lord thought would be funny with deep cut anime-brand humor. Its the same reason I’m perma furious about Liam (the ONE black human character they gave us as a companion in MA:E) because we got a character with potential that was ruined by caustically cringe writing. Maybe I would pick her up and deal with/ learn the intricacies of her character and how to appreciate them if everything she said didn’t sound like a 12 year old trying and bombing at stand up, but no. Absolutely not.
