I hate Sera significantly more than I hate Solas. But less than I hate Anders. She is physically and spiritually abusive, transphobic, and wildly immature on top of it.

She’s the only companion that is like this. At that point, it’s not bad writing; it’s a deliberate character choice. If the writers had wanted to make her not-transphobic, they could have done so. They did it with Bull and Varric. If they’d wanted to make her reject Dalish culture without projecting it onto her Dalish lover, they could have done so. They did it with Zevran. If they’d wanted to make her an advocate for the lower class in a way that isn’t a complete joke and obviously brimming with selfishness, they could have done so. They did it with Charade and that one dwarf in the tavern in Orzammar. If they’d wanted her to not LITERALLY TAKE A SWING AT HER GIRLFRIEND AND POINT A DEADLY WEAPON IN HER GIRLFRIEND’S FACE AND THEN TELL HER GIRLFRIEND TO “SHUT UP” WHEN SAID GIRLFRIEND WAS UPSET ABOUT THAT, they could have done so. There is literally no other love interest in the entire Dragon Age series that is as violently abusive as Sera. Even Anders doesn’t come close. At that point, even if the writers didn’t specifically intend for this to be an abusive romance, they definitely intended to write Sera with a personality that is prone to violence and is thus incapable of being in a healthy relationship.

Because a large section of this fandom thinks that morality is determined by how many marginalized identities you have. Sera is one of the most obviously neuro-divergent characters in the series, she’s the only lesbian companion, and she’s also an elf, which some people treat as if it’s exactly the same as being an *actual* character of color. Apparently all of that makes her more worthy of love and forgiveness than actually being a good person would.

“Sera is a t*rf” is an interesting thing to read, but she definitely does have a few transmisogynist comments.

I grew up around domestic violence so it triggers the shit out of me when Sera does things like take a swing at her girlfriend or point a deadly weapon at her girlfriend’s face (and then tell her girlfriend to “shut up!” and make it all about /her/ feelings when her girlfriend is rightly upset by this). To be completely honest, I find Sera’s romance even more abusive than Solas and Anders’. I can finish Solas and Anders’ romances; Sera’s triggered me so badly that I couldn’t even finish hers, and I haven’t been able to stomach recruiting her ever since.

I have nothing against Sera’s fans. Some of my best friends love her. But I just can’t stomach her, at this point. Sorry. (Trust me, as a lesbian, I don’t /like/ feeling this way about the only canon lesbian in the series.)
