This is the kind of biopsy that involves a general anaesthetic and blue dye.
I hadn't had a GA for 20+ years and was pretty nervous as my mum and sister have horrendous reactions to it (hallucinations and vomiting amongst them, yuk). I had a chat to the anaesthetist and he said he'd do his best for me.
This surgery was to check out whether the cancer had spread to the lymphatic system. Blue dye was injected into my boob, by the tumour, and then they waited to see which nodes in the lymph glands under my arm it drained to first (the sentinel nodes). These were removed and sent for analysis. Luckily they were totally clear. My cancer was contained within the tumour in my breast.
After this procedure though I am susceptible to lymphoedema for the rest of my life. This means that if I get an injury, or infection, in my right arm then the lymphatic system may not be able to cope and my arm would swell up! Great. Fortunately it has been fine so far, but I have to be careful and not allow anyone to stab me, bite me (insects) or check my blood pressure on that side. FOR EVER.
I also have numbness under my arm where the nerves were cut, which is a little odd.
I came round from the GA feeling fine. I've since asked the anaesthetist what he gave me, and now always request the same cocktail! Apparently the key was to avoid giving me gasses.
I got to go home the next day and be looked after by my family for a few days before I started chemo.
Oh, and I was still smurfed with a blue patch on my boob.
