Jareth is that part of Sarah connected to her dreams. He embodies everything she desires. And he teaches her how to grow up (coming of age) without necessarily giving all that up (magic of childhood). Something she want from the beginning. Jareth is the slave of Sarah. Under her control. Like Orlok is under the control of Ellen.
And it annoys me that there are people who think this canonical reading of the film isn't feminist—and that a feminist reading would simply be one where Jareth is an abuser whom Sarah manages to defeat. Constantly insisting on a scenario where the woman is the perpetual victim isn't the feminist act they think it is—especially when, canonically, the exact opposite is true...
