It’s actually significant in-character/story. There’s two layers to it -- the Semliki river is a significant river in the Congo, where Nia’s relatives a few generations back are from (her grandparents were freed slaves). So her naming it as such is a way to pay tribute to her history. 

Oh! Actually kind of the same, though it’s hard to say! The plot of Ambergris as plot goes is a murder on a whaling ship; but the day to day life of the whaling ship goes on as they’re trying to figure it out. But the more pressing question is whether Sentenza and Karro would end up aboard the Semliki. 

The plot crashes together Sentenza and Karro to the Semliki right quick, but it’s actually not quite as kismet of an event as it seems. Sentenza offers their work to the ship right away since he’s curious about Sylvan’s work; and he also sees an opportunity (Sen, you dick, when you pull a dead man from shore it’s not really a great time to say ‘hey, clearly you need new crew so why not hire us?’ ).

But that said, when Sen and Karro get to Gaultois, they’re pretty close to in need of work right quick. And if they asked around town, they would get told about the Semliki. It might even make a better first impression if they aren’t making tactless remarks about corpses (*cough* Sen *cough*). And even though Sen is dedicated to finding interesting work, and the corpse-finding makes a strong case for him -- I think the Semliki is an interesting enough boat in its own right to convince him to give that a try. The only thing that might turn him off is if he met Klaus before as ‘captain’. Klaus is a sweet egg, but Sentenza would pick up right away that he wasn’t captain material. So that might send them off in different directions. But assuming he ran into Sylvan’s work at some point -- he’d be intrigued.
