I'm a quantum [ telescope, microscope, human ] Finding [ distant, small, hidden ] stuff. Just a little bit of [ newness, blueness, trueness ] that everyone forgot to love.
You're [ alien, mysterious, sacred ], And sometimes, a little naked, And the people [ fear, need, forget ] what they can't [ name, hold, see ].
But every [ part, fragment, light ] of [ you, them, us, we ] Reflecting in [ the mirror, your eyes, the deepest sea ] Is the light that broke the night and led [ us, you ] right to [ them, you, me ].
Had to come up with a definition of "music" on the fly, and basically settled on "the ritualized performing of and listening to sounds with a non-semantic dimension"
ritualized = there are arbitrary but collectively-agreed-upon formal constraints about how and what kind of sound is produced
non-semantic dimension = speech can be present, but speech alone doesn't qualify as music
Because if try to define music in more classic terms of melody, harmony, rhythm and timbre, it is in fact trivial to find genres of music that lack one or several of those.
Both melody and timbre are absent in genres that consist entirely of untuned percussion (I've seen the claim that this also applies to rap singing but I think that's BS; rap singing does have melodies, but it tends to repeat the same note a lot in a row to emphasize the rhythm more than the movement of the melody)
Harmony is trivially absent from most musical genres in the world and thru-out history, as it is mainly a feature of polyphony, and polyphonic genres of music are the exception rather than the rule.
Notions of rhythms are largely absent in so-called "free rhythm" genres of music, such as early Christian plainchant, where there are "long" and "short" syllables based on the text being chanted, but only relative to one another, there's no actually fixed length a sung syllable in the actual performance, it changes thru-out, with improvisational accelerations and decelerations, and no division into bars with a fixed amount of units of time per bar.
