As the Autumn Equinox draws nearer, I am reminded of the myth of Persephone, who while out gathering flowers with her mother Demeter, was kidnapped by Hades and imprisoned in the underworld. A distraught Demeter abandoned her duties as goddess of the grain and harvest to search for her daughter, so the crops withered horribly and the land went barren in Persephone’s absence. Ultimately, Demeter begged Zeus to intervene, who ruled that since Persephone had partaken in the food of the dead by eating six pomegranate seeds while in the underworld, there she must spend 6 months of each year. The first day of fall (9/22) marks Persephone’s annual return to the underworld, and the beginning of the darker and sparser months caused by Demeter’s heartbreak. It is also the release date for my Descent of Persephone Collection. In these creations, fiery petrified wood captures the essence of the underworld and the balance between light and dark, while deep red garnets evoke the pomegranate seeds that sealed Persephone’s fate. Crescent moons, oak leaves, roses, and bare branches appear in the metalwork, echoing the duality of Persephone’s role, the seasonal cycles of life and death, and the magic inherent in waxing and waning. Brass and 14k gold fill details appear throughout the pieces, drawing in the warm tones of fall.
