i’ve been rereading the rule of four (one of the faves of teenage me) and came across the word steganography and looked it up and thought, i guess sebald code falls under this category but also, not just the sebald code itself, but probably other techniques gustav sebald also used, for his movies. the messages and codes he sneaked into there via different methods - it felt like he would have them as well. sebald code is just one of the methods and most often used in letters and such.
gustav sebald steganography expert ....

name: Gustav Sebald

department: cinematography
"I want to say somewhere: I've tried to be forgiving.
And yet.
There were times in my life, whole years, when anger got the better of me"
So I'm looking into the codes used in ASOUE and, whilst utterly frustrating to work with, Sebald Code is particularly ingeneus in the way it can be hidden in the most innocuous of texts.
A message communicated with this code uses every eleventh word of a communication, starting with the first word following the mention, or sound, of a bell ringing (don't miss out the first word like I kept doing). Mind that you count the words between correctly, this greatly vexed me when first reading it. It gets easier with time, and I'm slowly coming to grips with it. However, I think I'll just be using the written version as, so far, when I'm testing it out verbally I make frequent mistakes. Aside from this, Sebald Code is quite interesting.
It's important to note that the code ends when the ringing ceases, or is mentioned again, signifying the end of the message. This would be great to work into random communications, even if the coded message isn't anything important. Sometimes it's just fun to have a secret message for the sake of it. I'm almost tempted to write fanfiction for media unassociated with the ASOUE universe and sneak it in just to see if anyone notices.
Someday I hope to be able to rickroll somebody in Sebald code.

how come whenever sebald code is used it’s underlined. what’s the point of a secret code if you’re just gonna give it to us like that cowards
Zumbis in the snow theory
The survivor of the fire that is shown inside the snowman in the movie Zombies in the Snow (described in TRR and in Chapter 9 of the UA) is not Beatrice, nor Bertrand, nor Quigley, nor the parents of Quigley and has nothing to do with the time of the main events of ASOUE. As well?
Let's start with the obvious: it can not refer to Quigley, because the description of Quigley's survival was quite different. When Jacques Snicket discovered that Quigley was alive, Gustav Sebald (who recorded Zombies in the Snow) was already dead, and Uncle Monty was also dead.
In addition, Count Olaf participated in the film Zombies in the Snow playing the role of the young Roulf. (He's called Omar by Sally Sebald in Chapter 9 of the UA) Why would he be playing that role in a movie to warn Uncle Monty? Does not make sense. In addition, Gustav Sebald was killed by Olaf at least 8 days before he disguised Stephano to go to Uncle Monty's house. In addition, there is a photo with three children who look nothing like the Quagmires. But Gustav left this picture along with the screenplay for the movie Zombies in the Snow.
In addition, Sally sends Lemony a picture of when Gustav Sebald started building the Snowman that was used in the film. At the time, Gustav was still a child. When Lemony was 13 years old, Gustav already existed, as he is quoted in ATWQ ...
So surely the Sebald code found in the movie Zombies in the Snow is not talking about the Baudelaire siblings or the Quagmaires. It's talking about some old case.
In fact, there is evidence that by the time Lemony was Stain'd-by-the-Sea at nearly 13 years old, the movie Zombies in the Snow already existed. In the book File Under: 13 Suspicious Incidents, in the Three Suspects Case, Mimi said she spent the night watching horror movies. Between the films she describes that there was one that was something with zombies in the winter. So we can conclude that the movie Zombies In The Snow is very old, they were watching a reprise in TRR.
Gustav Sebald recorded the film when he was still a child. Olaf participated because he was still a VFD actor and had not ignited things. The hidden message and the photo had nothing to do with the Baudelaire siblings. The new assistant had nothing to do with Olaf. One thing the book "the End" has taught us is that the world does not revolve around the Baudelaire siblings.
And if you decide to put a secret message in a movie, be clever: every time the movie is watched, someone will receive the same message, even if years later the movie continues to be watched and rewatched the secret message will never change, even if the subject of the message is no longer relevant.
And remember: Daniel Handler duplicates events to confuse you.
I like the idea of Josephine having had a surname starting with S before marrying Ike. Do you think she could be part of another vfd family?
I do as well, especially if it’s Sebald, since that would mean her brother/cousin/other relative invented a code that completely disregards grammar. That would be interesting, and it would make her part of a VFD family.
It’s possible that her family was completely unconnected to VFD before she married Ike, but I think it’s more likely that she had some relationship to a VFD member before her marriage. We do know that as a teenager she was involved with VFD and knew Kit... and had been a volunteer long enough to offer some commentary about Lemony’s performance as a volunteer. That leads me to believe that she became a volunteer when she was young, so either she is from a VFD family or she was kidnapped very young or both.
