"We fled from fighting and drought," she said, "The fighting was bad and they killed my husband and two of my children." Dozens of refugee families are sleeping rough on the streets and surviving on handouts, it is really desperate. There was no sign of any official assistance, the refugees are all relying on people’s good will; tea shop owners help out, locals stop to buy an arm-full of bread to be distributed. They gather early in the morning before sunrise near an area where bread is sold out of wheelbarrows hoping someone will come and pay for some bread. The nearby tea shops do what they can, dishing hot tea for some. They gather at different places during the day in a weary routine hoping for sustenance. At night the lay down in rows huddled under blankets, their forms lit up by the passing traffic. Most of them have been here for one to two months and they are still arriving. Most of the people I spoke to have walked for at least four days to get here. Some are Tigrayans, most are from Amhara.
