It started as a joke, you weren't even supposed to be part of the conversation. You were minding your business and on the way to the kitchen to grab a snack when you heard it.
it was just a dumb and offhand comment. Your brother and his friends were in the middle of their stupid sleepover. You were used to it and learned to tune them out, you'd heard them say worse, heard them talk about girls like this before. But when your name was mentioned. Everything changed.
“Yo, your sister’s kinda hot” one of them snorted, while popping open a can of soda.
You froze at the bottom of the stairs, your breath catching in your throat.
Your brother groaned in disgust. “Dude, what the hell?”
“Oh, c’mon, I’m just saying,” he laughed, his voice rough and joking. “She’s pretty cute.”
And before he could say another word, Mark scoffed, cutting the guy off before he could finish. “Ew her?”
Your stomach dropped, feeling a sharp pang through your chest.
The worst part? Was that he said it so casually, like mocking, like the idea of you being attractive was so far fetched that it was laughable.
The guy you had been secretly crushing on for years, the guy who would barely even acknowledge your existence unless he was making fun of you.
Your brother immediately got defensive. “Don’t talk about her like that dude.”
The loudest one of the group just laughed and shrugged it off. “Relax, I’m not actually gonna hit on her.”
“Keep it that way” your brother said “And Mark, you’re one to talk for someone who barely gets girls himself”
The room erupted into laughter but Mark didn’t react. He just leaned back against the couch, sipping his drink like he didn’t have a care in the world. “Whatever, dude.”
You felt the sting of those words ‘ew her?’ you didn't want to admit this but the ache in your chest felt heavy. You quickly turned around to go to your room, hoping that no one saw your face.
“I'm going up stairs” you called out, quickly going up the stairs. Ignoring the way your heart seemed to race in your chest.
“Yeah, saw ya” you heard Mark calling behind you, but that didn't make you feel better.
