Writing About German Stuff
Hallo alle zusammen! (Hello everyone!)
After falling in love with @scriptmedic and seeing the scriptfamily grow so fast over the last week, I thought I might be helpful as well. I expect my knowledge won’t be as important as what @scriptecology, @script-a-world, @scriptlawyer, @scriptphysicist @forenscripts or @scriptsoldier can tell you (and I might miss some blogs, sorry guys), but here I am to answer your questions about Germans, Germany and german culture.
Writing characters in a different country than your own - or with a specific background or speaking a foreign language - is hard, I know. It’s not exactly feasible to jet around the world and spent enough time in a country to really get it, just to write a story.
But fear not! I am here to help - at least, as long as it’s german. Whether you want to sent your character(s) to Germany, let them have a german pen pal (do these still exist? Do people still have pen pals?) or have them learn a few sentences in german, ask me and I’ll do my very best to help you!
Who am I to answer your questions?
Well, I am but a mere student (of communications and northern studies) with connections to (nearly) all of Germany through family and friends, tired of characters in (american) media speaking either unintelligible german or with a Bavarian accent and wearing Lederhosn. I know, I know, I’m exaggerating and really, neither of that is important in written media, but still...
