What DOES an OR smell like?
HAH! I’ve been waiting for this question since the very first post this blog ever freaking made.
ORs tend to smell like a lot of different things, dependingon what’s going on inside of it. Sometimes they just smell like antiseptic,though this tends to fade by the time actual procedures start.
Sometimes they just smell, well, meaty, because – spoiler alert – humans are made of meat. That meaty smell also happens at autopsy,by the way, which may be why a certain number of people who are in the sameroom as autopsies get hungry.
Sometimes it smells like seared, awful, burning flesh. Somesurgeons choose to use cauterizing wands instead of scalpels to do theirincisions – it’s less bloody, it’s well controlled, etc., but the smell is absolutely awful.
Another awful smell: sometimes, especially during ortho work(like a hip replacement), the OR might smell like bone being ground, becausethey may have to alter the structure of the hip to accommodate the replacement.And ground bone smells… acrid, burning, cloying, sharp and bitter.
One smell you don’t wantin the OR is the smell of shit. Shit-stink in an OR is bad news. It meanssterility has gone right out the window, that the person has a much higherchance of developing sepsis. Plus your characters have to work with the smellof shit until the operation is over, which could be hours.
Remember that characters in an OR are also going to bebreathing through masks, which smell kind of papery and a little stifling and even claustrophobic, sodon’t forget to add this in as a layer in the sensory descriptions!

I saw RN in the theater and fell in love with Benji and, upon looking in his tag and reading fanfic, I discovered that you too love him AND love to torment him via fic, which i also love to do, and I've followed you ever since. I've messaged you off anon maybe twice in the last year out of shyness, but I just got the urge to tell you how much I love you and your blog and not be shy about doing it, so that's how I found you and also i really love your blog <3
Lets play the game called “how did you find my blog and what made you want to follow"
@scottmontgomery
Ahhhhhhhhhh omg this is one of the nicest things! It’s always so amazing to find people who love Benji just as much as me. I certainly do love to torment him, I’m very very evil haha
I’m so glad that you enjoy my blog and I hope I continue to post/make/write things you like :D ❤️
