Book 100 of 2021. Here lies my 100th read of the year. 🎉❤️🎉❤️🎉❤️🎉❤️🎉 After much deliberation and some low-key worrying, I finally picked my 100th read. What better than Ray for my 100th read? My 100th read in Ray's 100th Year. Perfect! Serendipitous! Feluda and Topshe and Jatayu are more than characters, they are people we know, people we grew up with, people we feel safe with. Their adventures, banter, sleuthing, travels and camaraderie are alllll things we love and appreciate. A Bengali child is handed these stories as heirlooms. They are precious to us. Integral to our collective memories. A part and parcel of the Bengali way of life. I grew up hearing of this super sleuth but could only read them in my mid-twenties when I found translations of these classic tales. I have since then read everything Ray's ever written a few times over. For that and evermore, I will always be infinitely grateful to translators and the invaluable work they do. They bring these stories to those who wouldn't be able to access it without their help. Because I cannot imagine my life without Feluda and his magajastra. ❤️ PS: If you haven't read Ray yet...what are you waiting for?! My books are a blessing. Really! Some Scattered Thoughts on Owing Books/// I love my books. Shelves all over my home, sitting in tall, often unwieldy stacks, towering over every other aspect of my home. I love my books. But since the beginning of the year, I've been feeling overwhelmed with these loves of mine. Everywhere I looked, I saw a stack of books read and unread. And it began to get to it. ' I have far too many books.' ' I really am running out of space.' 'Maybe I need to prune my shelves. Sell some of my books maybe?' It was driving me crazy. I've been buying books since 2006. A couple of books every few months. From Sales, from the streets and even from some bookshops that I had a hard time leaving empty handed. They brought me so much joy. Slowly, but surely, my shelves began to fill up. O had my very own library! Me! Even now, nothing brings me as much joy as seeing my double stacked, bursting at it's seams bookshelves. I spent all of this morning dusting and cleaning my books, some of them and as I made room and stacked my books based on which ones I want to read in the near future, it hit me- Fuck it, I still love each and every book of mine. They still spark all kinds of joy. Every last one of them! They are a privilege. One that my childhood and teenage version would envy with the fire of a thousand suns 😁 Seriously, I am not even joking. So I've snapped out of it. Life is too short and far too previous to stress about too many books. It's a blessing I should be grateful for everyday. End of musing.
