Speaking from the Sashiko stitcher’s point of view, there is no vivid boundary between Sashiko & Boro. They are on the same line of hand-stitching with care. It is not like “Sashiko or Boro''. It is like, “Sashiko and then Boro”. The exhibition of authentic Boro is opening this Friday at Japan Society in NYC. What I am trying to share is the process of creating such beautiful pieces - Sashiko. ☆ The photo is a “Boro-To-Be” piece by Keiko (Sold). “BORO” is a result of repetitive Sashiko. Therefore, it contains the “hope/care” of ordinary People. In today’s Live Streaming, I talked about what Boro is for us, for Sashiko artisans. Boro is more than a result. Sashiko is more than technique. It is my goal to share something more than “material” or “result”. ☆ The photo is a Boro (to be) piece made by Keiko, and I keep using it and mending to make it more “Boro”. It can be a museum quality, but I would like to keep using it and encouraging people to feel/touch it when they see me. It is fantastic that people consider Boro as the Art. Fabric doesn’t become “Boro” without stitching. We call that Japanese hand-stitching, resulting in Boro, as Sashiko. I am proud of our journey of sharing Sashiko today, which is like creating the future of Boro by enjoying Sashiko. We also keep making Sashiko pieces. When we share with each other, it will be more than enough.” (Aida Mistuo, 1989). ☆ I hope that my Sashiko stories will remind them the importance of “sharing”. I keep telling my daughter to share. She does such a great job sharing her toys with her friends. It is ironic that we forget the importance of sharing by being adults. I am saying nothing special. One of the frustrations I feel when I see the word “Sashiko” in a non-Japanese-related context is that they often focus on the “result”. The result is important, but the result is merely the result. Sashiko is more than that, I believe. The core is somewhere else, and the core is what the society is in need. ☆ “Am I doing it right?”// ”Do I Sashiko stitch correctly?”. I understand that question, but before questioning, I want them to feel and wonder why they hand-stitched. ☆ Stop judging yourself. Learn to be okay with what you do & who you are. Instead of judging yourself, start caring for others. Then, one will care for the origin of Sashiko instead of trying to be “right” or “popular” in this Sashiko trend. I do not think the Japanese people practiced Sashiko with worrying about being “correct”. They stitched for the family who suffer from the poverty & severe winter. I understand we are scared. I am worried as well. We should prepare for it. However, the best thing we can do now is to keep the “ordinary”. There are people who committed their life into the field we are now worried about. I would rather trust them than search for the “quick” answer online and get worried more than necessary. So, I will keep the ordinary. It is the time to “share”, instead of being “competitive”. Aim to be “the one” of everyone, instead of “Number One” or “Only One”. ☆ The power of people who commit their life into one field is greater than one can think of. I know it by practicing Sashiko. Therefore, I trust those who are working so hard Right Now to unravel and resolve the CoronaVirus outbreak. I will practice Sashiko. I will update the website. I will sell the Sashiko items. The ordinary can be the remedy. Do Sashiko. Stay yourself out of the panic from quick information. In this society, we are required to “think” to be more productive, efficient and to be “better”. I am asking to give up judging oneself continuously by enjoying Sashiko. Feel instead of Think. Respect (the difference) instead of Judge. The message is the same from the beginning. “Care” instead of “Opinion”.　 ☆ I kind of talked about random things in Today’s Live Streaming.
