⁣ Canon Powershot SX730 HS ⁣ Taken on 08/12/2020.⁣ ⁣ Villar is one of several eccentric hamlets sprawling the enchanting forests deep in the Varaita Valley.⁣ ⁣ Honestly, you could have heard a pin drop in this Alpine borgata, probably because all the villagers were out skiing the whole day. So it felt as if I had Villar all to myself!⁣ ⁣ Here's a photo I took of a typical Alpine chalet with a beautiful wooden sculpture shining under the sun. The 'Val Varaita' ('Varaita Valley') situated in the southwestern area of Piedmont is the greenest valley in the province of Cuneo with its enchanting meadows and woods — hence its nickname 'Smeraldina', an affectionate way of saying 'emerald'. What's more, this quiet valley provides a picturesque setting for historical villages like Chianale, Pontechianale and Casteldelfino that lie close to the French border. As well as being an idyllic setting for a winter or summer getaway, the Varaita Valley has a number of striking churches dating back centuries. This post shows pictures of 'la Parrochiale dei SS. Pietro e Paolo di Sampeyre' ('the Parish church of Saints Peter and Paul of Sampeyre'), a remarkable building constructed on a Romanesque-Gothic plan at the end of the 14th century. The church is made up of a single nave, but in the blind arches you can see valuable frescoes depicting the story of Jesus, painted by Tommaso and Matteo Biazaci – known as the 'brothers of Busca' – between 1470 and 1480. The level of detail in the frescoes that have remained for centuries is nothing short of impeccable, so much so that I couldn't resist snapping a photo — which turned out to be more than 10! If you want to visit this amazing church – and the Valaita Valley for that matter – you can get there by bus from Saluzzo with 'BusCompany' line 106. Saluzzo itself can be reached by bus from Cuneo (line 91) or Savigliano (line 97).
