7 Signs Your “Perfect” Love Interest is Actually Just a Plot Device
1. They Only Exist For the Protagonist
Quick fix: Give them something that is purely their own that they don’t share with the main character. It can be literally anything. It just needs to be purely their own and they need a reason for why they love that thing (or person).
2. They Are More of a Checklist of Traits Than a Person
Quick fix: For each trait you have lined up, ask yourself questions about them and dig deeper, especially questions that start with “why.”
3. They Lack Internal Conflict
Quick fix: Give them a demon to fight and a back story to support it. Just one internal struggle is enough, and not every decision they make has to go through that struggle, but at least a few of them do.
4. They Don’t Challenge the Protagonist
Quick fix: Give them their own values, and if the protagonist says or does something that goes against those values, let them voice their opinion. The protagonist doesn’t need to be a villain and make objectively terrible decisions that harm others. The objective is to give the love interest a voice even if it’s a meek and quiet one.
5. They Are “Fated” And It’s the Only Justification
Quick fix: If your story starts with two people being imprisoned together or got lost together and develop a relationship from there, their relationship in the beginning wouldn’t feel like a choice. You can always fix that by letting them meet other people later and still gravitating towards each other (just make sure they aren’t fixating on each other because of trauma).
6. They are Forgettable Without the Protagonist
Quick fix: Like our earlier points, build the love interest’s personality and interests independently of the protagonist. Remember they are two separate people who just happen to meet and fall in love.
7. They Are Never Proactive
Quick fix: Analyze the plot until now. Does the love interest take actions on their own accord or do they wait for things to happen then react to them? If all they do is react, remember the goals and past you gave them and implement those.
A few months ago, I wrote a post reflecting on the character, Tracy McConnell, from the popular series, How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM), and h
