in which dean applies for college [deancas, future!fic]
September, 2015
âThis is so fucking embarrassing,â Dean says. And it is, itâs humiliating, because Dean has been to Hell and stopped the apocalypse and fought his way through Purgatory, and here he is, defeated by a fucking essay that will decide whether or not his ass goes to college.
Cas blinks at him from across the table, head tilted to the side in that slightly alien way of his thatâs never quite gone away, not even with his wings officially clipped. âWhy?â he asks. âBecause you donât know what to write?â
âDean,â Cas says, voice a soft rumble, and this is the voice he uses whenever Deanâs getting too worked up to think properly, and it always works, damn him, and this time is no exception: Dean can already feel his shoulders relaxing, the tension easing out of his neck. Cas reaches across the table, palms up, in invitation. Sighing, Dean unfolds his arms and pushes his laptop to the side, and leans forward to rest his hands in Casâ.
Casâs eyes crinkle up at the corners when he smiles his lopsided, self-conscious smile. His hands wrap around Deanâs and squeeze, a gesture of reassurance. âYou can write this essay, Dean,â he says solemnly, like this is some matter of great import. âI believe in you.â
Deanâs cheeks heat, he can feel his ears burning, and he still isnât used to this, Casâ awkward sincerity, and he doesnât think he ever will be. But even now, he canât help but think that Casâ trust is misplaced, because he isnât the man that Cas thinks he isâhe doesnât deserve the faith Cas has in himâ
âI donât believe in me,â Dean whispers, and his throat feels tight and dry and painful.
Cas lets go of his hands and stands, and a moment later Dean has a lapful of warm angel (because, okay, heâs human, now, but heâs not human, not entirely, heâll always be Other, and Dean wouldnât have him any other way). Cas cradles Deanâs face in his palms, thumbs stroking circles on the arc of his cheekbones. âDean Winchester,â Cas says, âI have given up everything for you, and I would do so again in a heartbeat. You are worth it. I have faith in you, and I will always have faith in you. If you canât believe in yourself, at least believe me when I say that you deserve to.â
Dean sighs and brings his hands to Castielâs waist, thumb stroking lightly at his skin. âCas, I donât even know what to write about,â he says. âIâm supposed to talk about something Iâve done thatâs had âa profound impactâ on someoneâs life, and what the fuck can I even say that doesnât have to do with hunting?â
Cas is quiet for a moment, looking thoughtful; and while he thinks, he presses his mouth against Deanâs, slow and warm, teeth worrying gently at Deanâs bottom lip. Dean slides one hand around to press against the small of Castielâs back, urging him closer. If only he could write about this: heâs sure he could wax poetic about the feel of Casâ lips against his, the hint of perpetual stubble, the way Cas fits so perfectly curved against him.
âYou know,â Cas says when he pulls away to breathe, pressing his lips against the tip of Deanâs nose, the furrow between his brows. âYou were more of a father to Sam than John was.â
âThe fuck does that have to do with anything?â Dean grunts, mouthing at Casâs jaw. He doesnât want to talk about Sam and his father while Cas is in his lap, doing these things to him.
âIâm just saying,â Cas says, tilting his head so Dean has a better angle to work with, âthat youâohâyou practically raised Sam.â
âAnd?â
Cas squirms against him when Deanâs mouth latches onto his pulse point and sucks. âAnd,â Castiel gasps, âif that isnât aâa âprofound impactââthen what is?â
Dean pauses with his lips still pressed against the feverish heat of Casâ throat, Castielâs heart fluttering beneath the delicate skin. âYouâre saying I should write about raising Sammy,â he says, incredulous.
Cas has to take a moment to compose himself. âWell, yes,â he says. âI canât think of a better example of your fortitude, strength of character, and selflessness. You gave up your childhood so that Sam could enjoy the pretense of one.â
Fuck, heâs blushing again. âOh, come on,â Dean says, âI was just doing what I had to.â
The look Cas gives him is the one he reserves for whenever Dean has said or done something incredibly stupid. âWhat?â Dean asks, somewhat self-consciously.
âDean,â Castiel says. âYou were four years old when your mother died, and you took on the task of basically single-handedly raising a child. And look at Sam now; isnât he exactly the type of man you wanted him to be? Isnât he kind, and brave, and selfless?â
âWell, yeah, butââ
âHeâs that way because of you, Dean,â Cas says. âItâs because of you that Sam is the man he is today. You should be proud.â
Dean squirms, wishing he could turn his back on Cas, or at least avert his gaze, but Casâs hands are still cradling his cheeks, holding him in place. Castielâs eyes are soft and wide and breathtakingly blue.
âIâCas, I donât know if I can write about that,â Dean says. He has to take a deep, wavering breath. âItâsâfuck, I donât want to get into college just because of some sob storyââ
âItâs not a âsob storyâ,â Cas says. âItâs your story. You are an inspiration, Dean. And they will see that, too.â
Cas leans his forehead against Deanâs, and for a long stretch of time they just sit there, breathing in the same air, Casâs hands warm against Deanâs face, his nose just brushing against Deanâs without every exhale. Finally, Cas pulls away and says, âIâm going to make dinner. Write your essay.â
âCasââ
Heâs silenced with a kiss, gentle but no less effective for it. When Cas pulls away, all Dean can think is blue.
âIâll make burgers,â Cas says, even though burgers are Deanâs dish, heâs the one who makes burgers, but he canât find it in himself to complain. Cas slides off his lap and adds, âYou can do this, Dean. I have faith.â And he smiles, the small, sweet smile he reserves solely for Dean, and then he leaves Dean to the quiet of the room.
Dean sits there and breathes for a moment, drumming his fingers against his thighs; and then he pulls the laptop towards him, abruptly, and begins to type:
When I was four, my mother died in a fire that burned down our house. My brother, Sammy, was six months old. My dad shoved him into my arms and told me to run, donât look back. My dad came out of the house unhurt, but it was like everything he was had been burned away. He couldnât look after us, he couldnât hardly look after himself. When Sammy cried, I held him. When he needed feeding, I heated the bottle and burped him afterwards. When he needed to get changed, or couldnât sleep, or fell on his face and bawled, I was the one who took care of him. We didnât have a father, not really. It was just me and Sammy, a seedy motel room, and a handful of cash dad left us for food âŠ

He applies to four schools and gets into three. Kansas State University offers him a full ride and a personal letter that reads the following:
Mr. Winchester,
Upon reading your essay, the admissions board decided unanimously that you are exactly the type of person we want here at KSU. Your inspirational story of having raised your brother since you were a child moved many of our board to tears. You are truly a man of great character and resilience. We hope that you will decide to enroll in KSU. We would be extremely proud to have you as a member of our class of 2020.
With all our respect and admiration,
Dr. Adrian Malchov
Head of the Board of Admissions

That night, as they make love, Cas breathes, âI am so proud of you,â in between kisses, and Dean has to bury his face in the junction of Castielâs neck and shoulder to hide his tears.

I've wondered that myself, actually, specifically the stereotypical 'gay male voice'. I know a lot of gay men who speak like that and I wonder how it happens? Is it natural or is it like a development over time sort of thing? It's interesting psychology (Like yourself, I would like to say that I do not in any way discriminate against any kind of gay man).
Well itâs plausible that homosexual men will have more womanly features because of biology. I remember watching a video about orientation which claims homosexuality could come from the female body identifying the baby as a foreign object and attacking it? Which could alter brain chemistry and chromosomes XX and YY and all that science jazz. Iâm not really and expert on the facts.
I just donât get why the personality of it is appealing. I would hate to be super camp and do all the fabulous stuff? I guess I could call it? Itâs kinda difficult to have an opinion on it because it sounds so homophobic since we link gay=camp in society. Guess itâs all down to personal attraction and appearance.Â
What it boils down to for me is that as somebody who is attracted to guys, why do guys become so effeminate despite wanting the same thing and how do they find the attraction in it?Â
