Itching to know your thoughts on SamDeath now
What makes Sam/Death so special to me is that Sam has been consistently denied death his entire life. He's always been doomed by the narrative and his life is not his own - it's Dean's. Dean decides when Sam does and doesn't die (which you'll see in a LOT of Dean/Sam/Death interactions).
l think what really clicked for me regarding SamDeath was when Dean binded Death in Season 6 to respectfully demand (Dean's fear of Death will always be funny to me) Sam's soul back. Death explains to Dean the damage that would be done considering how raw of nerves Sam's soul was, but Dean doesn't care. Death obviously has no obligation to help Dean, but the Winchesters always worm their way into their fellow monsters by either providing entertainment or distraction... so Death helps even though Dean fucks up the one task he was given (to play Death for 24 hours).
Despite Sam's struggles and pleas to stop, Death still holds Sam's tortured soul with contemplation, as if for a moment he may hesitate, but he's a monster as old as the beginning and honestly, if he doesn't do this, Dean wouldn't ever leave him alone and Death provides a lock-safe. A wall. One that is not likely to hold.
He warns Sam to not scratch the wall as he forces Sam and his soul to combine as one. It speaks to me that Death, The Grim Reaper, is providing Sam back his soul without consent - once again allowing Sam to live. Even after Dean's utter idiocy (binding death, demanding death, failing the task, etc) to get to this point.
THIS. This is what made me hop on the SamDeath wagon.
Death considers it QUITE the honor to be COLLECTING Sam Winchester. This is the man that locked Lucifer in the cage with himself, helped take down Leviathans, attempted Hell Trials, and Sacrificed Himself for the world... and Death, someone who's age rivals God, is honored to be the one to reap Sam.
Not only does Death not assign another reaper but appears personally is something that speaks to me.
Sam has never had the choice to decide how his life ends, but now in season 9, Death is providing him that choice. Death is the only one who has ever presented Sam with that choice.
I like to imagine that Sam tries always to go back to Death, but God never allows him to. Sam has always, intimately, belonged to Death, but the light and righteousness (Dean) will never, ever let him go. A boy so doomed by the narrative that the only one who can even begin to understand him is Death.
